We investigated the phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) diversity and enzyme activities in soils from the volcano, Mt. Etna (Sicily). The soils were at sites which have been developing for different periods of time and have formed in volcanic lava of differing ages that have been supplemented with volcanic ejecta from subsequent eruptions. However, the plant communities indicated a marked successional difference between the sites and we have used this as a proxy for developmental stage. Active moss monitoring allows to identify and track distribution of metal(loid)s emitted from fumaroles on Vulcano Island, Italy

Abstract Volatile metal(loid)s are known to be emitted from volcanoes worldwide. We tested the suitability of active moss monitoring for tracking volatile metal(loid)s released from the fumarolic field on Vulcano Island, Italy, and differentiated fumaroles from other sources of gaseous and particulate trace elements such as sea spray and soil. Metal(loid) accumulation on the mosses per day did depend neither on the state of the exposed moss (dead or living) nor exposure time (3, 6, or 9 weeks). Innovazione varietale, genotipi tradizionali e qualità dei frutti nella melicoltura siciliana

L’obiettivo di questo lavoro è stato quello di valutare, dal punto di vista pomologico e sensoriale, varietà di melo tradizionali e nuovi cloni, entrambi coltivati nel territorio collinare siciliano. Più precisamente abbiamo studiato le performance qualitative di mele del germoplasma siciliano e quello di frutti provenienti da programmi di innovazione varietale che ancora sono in via di osservazione per una eventuale diffusione sul territorio nell’ambito di progetti ministeriali specifici (Farina et al., 2009; Gregori et al., 2015). Lo studio si è basato su analisi chimico-fisiche e panel test applicate alla raccolta commerciale.

Glossaries were the natural storehouses of learning all through the Middle Ages. Composed in different ways, these compilations collected items from Classical, Late Antique and Medieval texts, as well as from big encyclopaedias such as Isidore’s Etymologiae. A number of large glossaries, circulating in multiple copies both in Anglo-Saxon England and on the Continent, contributed to spreading the knowledge of a number of set works and authors, from the Bible to Jerome, from Vergil to Aldhelm. These works were ransacked to pick up words used with a peculiar turn of meaning, archaisms, neologisms and loanwords (but also more common words).
