Synthesis of Nanocrystals and Particle Size Effects Studies on the Thermally Induced Spin Transition of the Model Spin Crossover Compound [Fe(phen)2(…
2015
Surfactant-free nanocrystals of the model spin-crossover compound [Fe(phen)2(NCS)2] (phen: 1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized applying the reverse micelle technique. The morphology of the nanocrystals, characterized by scanning electronic microscopy, corresponds to rhombohedric platelets with dimensions ranging from 203 × 203 × 106 nm to 142 × 142 × 74 nm. Variation of the concentration of the Fe(BF4)2·6H2O salt in the synthesis has been found to have little influence on the crystallite size. In contrast, the solvent-surfactant ratio (ω) is critical for a good particle growth. The spin transition of the nanocrystals has been characterized by magnetic susceptibility measurements and …
Fifty Years of Mössbauer Spectroscopy in Solid State Research - Remarkable Achievements, Future Perspectives
2011
Mossbauer spectroscopy was founded more than fifty years ago based on an outstanding discovery by the young German physicist Rudolf Ludwig Mossbauer while working on his Ph.D. thesis. He discovered the recoilless nuclear resonance fluorescence of gamma radiation and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1961 as one of the youngest recipients of this most prestigious award. His discovery led to the development of a new technique for measurements of hyperfine interactions between nuclear moments and electromagnetic fields. This method, with highest sharpness of tuning of 10–13, yields information on valence state, symmetry, magnetic behavior, phase transition, lattice dynamics and other s…
Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic Properties of a Tris[3-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole]iron(II) Spin-Crossover Complex
2000
The synthesis and characterization of tris[3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole]iron(II) bis(tetrafluoroborate), obtained from the reaction of 3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole (Hpt) and hexaaquairon(II) tetrafluoroborate, [Fe(H2O)6](BF4)2, is described, together with its crystal structures at two temperatures. X-ray crystallographic parameters are as follows: [Fe(Hpt)3](BF4)2·nH2O (n ≈ 2) at 250 K: orthorhombic space group Pbam, a = 15.8068(18) A, b = 17.2800(14) A, c = 21.215(2) A, V = 5794.7(10) A3, and Z = 8. [Fe(Hpt)3](BF4)2·nH2O (n ≈ 2) at 95 K: orthorhombic space group Pbam, a = 15.7080(12) A, b = 17.1023(16) A, c = 21.006(2) A, V = 5643.1(9) A3, and Z = 8. The FeII ions are (at both temper…
The Iron Hydrido Complex [FeH(dppe)2]+: Solution and Solid-State Reactivity with Dinitrogen
2006
The blue compound [FeH(dppe)2]BPh4 (1) (dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) is investigated by optical absorption, vibrational, NMR and Mossbauer spectroscopy as well as magnetic susceptibility measurements. In the solid state, 1 is found to be paramagnetic (S=1) whereas in tetrahydrofuran (thf) solution it is diamagnetic. Importantly, 1 reacts with dinitrogen in thf solution and in the solid state to give the yellow and green dinitrogen complexes 2a and 2b, respectively, both of which have the formula [FeH(N2)(dppe)2]BPh4. Apart from their colour and optical spectroscopic properties, the dinitrogen compounds 2a and 2b also differ in their magnetic, Mossbauer and vibrational properties…
The preparation and identification of phases from the tin(II) chloride glycylglycinate system
1982
Abstract Two new distinct products, SnCl 2 ·2(C 4 H 8 N 2 O 3 ) and ClSn(C 4 H 7 N 2 O 3 ) can be obtained from the SnCl 2 : C 4 H 8 N 2 O 3 system. The IR, 119 Sn Mossbauer and thermal analytical data for the products are reported and discussed in terms of the bonding in these compounds.
Physicochemical Characterization of Isomorphously Substituted FeZSM-5 during Activation
2002
Physicochemical characteristics of isomorphously substituted FeZSM-5 both after preparation and after activation have been determined by gas (Ar and N2) physisorption, 27Al and 29Si magic-angle spinning–nuclear magnetic resonance, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, transmission electron microscopy, H2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy, and voltammetric response techniques. The activation of as-synthesized FeZSM-5 comprises calcination at 823 K and a subsequent steam treatment (300 mbar of H2O in N2) at 873 K. Calcination leads to complete removal of the template. During this process a significant fraction of iron is dislodged to extraframework positions…
Mössbauer effect study of the electronic ground state of iron(II) in [57FexM1−x(bipy)3](ClO4)2 (M = Mn, Ni, Zn) and [57FexM1−x(phen)3](ClO4)2 (M = Ni…
1980
Earlier work in our laboratory on the effect of metal dilution on the 5T2(Oh ⇌ 1A1(Oh) equilibrium in polycrystalline spin crossover systems of iron(II) has shown that the relative stability of the high spin state, 5T2(Oh), at a given temperature, increases markedly with decreasing iron concentration. These results have initiated the present work. Using 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy, we have investigated the electronic ground state of iron(II) in the highly diluted solid solutions [FexM1−xL3] with L = bipy, M = Mn, Ni, Zn, x ≲ 0.005 and L = phen, M = Ni, Zn, x ≲ 0.005. Although the critical field potential (Vc) of the pure iron complexes, which are known to be low spin, is reported to be not …
Comparative studies of ferric green rust and ferrihydrite coated sand: Role of synthesis routes
2008
International audience; A comparative study of ferrihydrite and ferric green rust coated sand prepared by three synthesis routes has been outlined in the present contribution. The two minerals displayed inverse properties in terms of quantity of deposited iron for all three methods investigated. For ferric green rust coating, a newly proposed synthesis route named as dry contact method was efficient for the maximum quantity of iron with almost full coverage area. Considering the similar parameters, the modified wet synthesis method designated as reactive method provides the optimum results for ferrihydrite coated sand. These coatings have been characterised by different surface analysis tec…
A PAS domain with an oxygen labile [4Fe-4S](2+) cluster in the oxygen sensor kinase NreB of Staphylococcus carnosus.
2008
The cytoplasmic histidine sensor kinase NreB of Staphylococcus carnosus responds to O(2) and controls together with the response regulator NreC the expression of genes of nitrate/nitrite respiration. nreBC homologous genes were found in Staphylococcus strains and Bacillus clausii, and a modified form was found in some Lactobacillus strains. NreB contains a sensory domain with similarity to heme B binding PAS domains. Anaerobically prepared NreB of S. carnosus exhibited a (diamagnetic) [4Fe-4S](2+) cluster when assessed by Mossbauer spectroscopy. Upon reaction with air, the cluster was degraded with a half-life of approximately 2.5 min. No significant amounts of Mossbauer or EPR detectable i…
Structural investigations on diorganotin and triorganotin(IV) phosphomycin derivatives.
2008
Abstract Four new diorganotin(IV), (R = Me, Bu), and triorganotin(IV), (R = Me, Ph), derivatives of the phosphomycin disodium salt antibiotic[(1R,2S)-1,2-epoxypropylphosphonate]Na2 have been synthesized and their solid state configuration studied by X-ray crystallography, FT-IR, Mossbauer, UV–Vis spectroscopies. The X-ray diffraction investigation, performed on the bis[trimethyltin(IV)]phosphomycin, showed that the coordination geometry at all the Sn atoms is trigonal bipyramidal. The structure of the complex forms an unusual polymeric zig-zag planar network. The FT-IR and the 119Sn Mossbauer studies supported the formation of trigonal bipyramidal (Tbp) molecular structures, both in the dio…
