The Risk Premium and the Esscher Transform in Power Markets

2012

In power markets one frequently encounters a risk premium being positive in the short end of the forward curve, and negative in the long end. Economically it has been argued that the positive premium is reflecting retailers aversion for spike risk, wheras in the long end of the forward curve the hedging pressure kicks in as in other commodity markets. Mathematically, forward prices are expressed as risk-neutral expectations of the spot at delivery. We apply the Esscher transform on power spot models based on mean-reverting processes driven by independent increment (time-inhomogeneous Levy) processes. It is shown that the Esscher transform is yielding a change of mean-reversion level. Moreov…

A surface hopping algorithm for nonadiabatic minimum energy path calculations

2015

The article introduces a robust algorithm for the computation of minimum energy paths transiting along regions of near-to or degeneracy of adiabatic states. The method facilitates studies of excited state reactivity involving weakly avoided crossings and conical intersections. Based on the analysis of the change in the multiconfigurational wave function the algorithm takes the decision whether the optimization should continue following the same electronic state or switch to a different state. This algorithm helps to overcome convergence difficulties near degeneracies. The implementation in the MOLCAS quantum chemistry package is discussed. To demonstrate the utility of the proposed procedur…

“Building Integrated Photovoltaics and DSSC-Glassblocks"

2012

According to many market analysts, Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) represents the future of photovoltaic (PV) industry as well as one of the strategies for the achievement of zero-energy building standards and UE goals for the next years. Dye-sensitised solar cell (DSSC) is a low-cost and very versatile solar technology, offering a wide range of possibilities in terms of colour, transparency and design: hence DSSC are particularly suited for BIPV and could give a big contribution in this direction. Starting from those considerations, this paper will show the first results of a research aimed at the integration of DSSC with the glassblock for the construction of multifunctional tran…

Molecular analysis suggests that recent Citrus tristeza virus outbreaks in Italy were originated by at least two independent introductions

2005

Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) is the causal agent of the most important virus disease of citrus. Numerous CTV isolates differing in biological and molecular characteristics have been reported worldwide. Recently, CTV was detected in Italy in several citrus crops from three separate areas: (1) Cassibile, province of Syracuse; (2) Massafra, province of Taranto; and (3) Belpasso, province of Catania. CTV isolates from Massafra and Cassibile were mild, whereas isolates from Belpasso induced severe symptoms. To study the genetic variation of CTV populations of these areas, 150 samples per area were examined by single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) and nucleotide sequence analysis of CTV g…

Optical Performance Evaluation of DSSC-integrated Glassblocks for Active Building Façades

2015

The paper outlines the results of a research, carried out at the University of Palermo, aimed at the assessment of the energy performance of a novel glassblock integrated with 3rd generation Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC), which, when installed into panels, allows obtaining translucent building envelopes able to provide high thermal and visual comfort levels while producing clean energy. The paper focuses on the optical analyses of four different configurations of DSSC-integrated glassblocks, carried out by using the optical design software Zemax. The values of optical transmittance, the solar factor and the electric power – calculated for each configuration – are discussed.

Remarks on the History of the Navy of the Empire of Nicaea in the Light of the Chronicle of Georgios Akropolites

2016

The Empire of Nicaea was a successor of the Byzantium shattered in 1204. In the newly established state marine traditions of Byzantines, remain alive. The best testimony to this, are the evidence contained in the chronicle of Georgios Akropolites, devoted to activities of the rulers of Nicaea, aimed to build their own naval forces. In this paper I'll also try to answer, where was beating the heart of the Nicean shipbuilding industry and how large was the navy of this state. This is important from point of view of the maritime history, because of the fleet of the Empire of Nicaea, filled the gap created after the fall of Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire, which was the local naval powe…

Globularia nudicaulis, a new host of Cucumber mosaic virus

2006

) is a perennial, foundnaturally on European mountains at altitudes between 900 and 2000 m.In June 2004, G. nudicaulis plants, with a yellow mosaic and/or variega-tion on malformed leaves, were noted among plant species cultivated in theBotanical Garden at Bologna University, Italy. No elongated virus-likeparticles were observed in affected-leaf extracts by transmission electronmicroscopy using a leaf dip method. By applying a protein A sandwichenzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (PAS-ELISA) technique ( Edwards Csystemic symptoms were observed in Nicotiana tabacum , N. benthamiana ,N. glutinosa, N. clevelandii and Capsicum annuum, and Cucumis sativusand C. melo. Naphthalene-2,6-diyl bis(4-methylbenzenesulfonate)

2018

The complete molecule of the title compound, C24H20O6S2, is generated by a crystallographic inversion centre at the middle of the naphthalene ring system. The dihedral angle between the naphthalene ring system and the pendant benzene ring is 10.23 (6)° and the C—S—O—C torsion angle is −172.05 (10)°. In the crystal, weak C—H...O interactions link the molecules into (10-1) sheets.

4-Chloronaphthalen-1-yl 4-methylbenzenesulfonate

2018

In the title compound, C17H13ClO3S, the naphthalene ring system and the benzene ring of the tosylate substituent are inclined to one another by 55.32 (5)°. The crystal structure features weak intermolecular C—H...O hydrogen bonds, one of which forms inversion dimers. Additional C—H...O hydrogen bonds and weak Cl...Cl halogen bonds stack the molecules along the b-axis direction.
