Thermal and Chemical Stability of Thiol Bonding on Gold Nanostars

2015

The stability of thiol bonding on the surface of star-shaped gold nanoparticles was studied as a function of temperature in water and in a set of biologically relevant conditions. The stability was evaluated by monitoring the release of a model fluorescent dye, Bodipy-thiol (BDP-SH), from gold nanostars (GNSs) cocoated with poly(ethylene glycol) thiol (PEG-SH). The increase in the BDP-SH fluorescence emission, quenched when bound to the GNSs, was exploited to this purpose. A maximum 15% dye release in aqueous solution was found when the bulk temperature of gold nanostars solutions was increased to T = 42 °C, the maximum physiological temperature. This fraction reduces 3-5% for temperatures …

Determination of the number densities of argon metastables in argon-hydrogen plasma by absorption and self-absorption methods

2006

The number densities of Ar 3s23p54s levels have been measured by means of two methods: a self-absorption method with a mirror behind the discharge vessel and an absorption method with a high-frequency electrodeless discharge lamp. Concentrations ranging from 6 × 107–4 × 109 cm−3 were obtained for the Ar 3s23p54s levels, depending on the argon content (10–100% Ar) in Ar/H2 microwave plasma. The populations of various sublevels of measured resonant and metastable states coincide within the experimental errors. It was observed that values from measurements of both methods are in good agreement.

Comparative analysis in terms of computational cost for different discrimination algorithms in implantable defibrillators

2005

Implantable defibrillators (ICDs) use very low computational cost criteria (rate, stability and onset) offering good sensitivity for arrhythmia detection. Although, the specificity of these combined criteria decreases in difficult arrhythmia discrimination as in case of discrimination between ventricular tachycardia (VT) and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). Several morphological published algorithms enhance arrhythmia discrimination but most algorithms are developed in personal computers and cannot be used in ICDs because of computational cost requirements compared with limited ICD capabilities. A general method to determine the possibility of ICD implementation for a discrimination algo…

Early induction of genetic instability and apoptosis by arsenic in cultured Chinese hamster cells

2002

In order to assess at what time from the beginning of exposure inorganic arsenic can give rise to genetic instability and trigger apoptosis, V79-C13 Chinese hamster cells were treated with 10 microM sodium arsenite for 24 h. Under these conditions, cell survival was >70% and cells showed neither an increase in chromosome aberration frequency nor a delay in cell cycle progression. Investigations, which were carried out every 6 h during the treatment, revealed an early appearance of genetically unstable cells, namely micronucleated, multinucleated and mononucleated 'giant' cells, as well as apoptotic cells. Indirect immunostaining using anti-beta-tubulin antibody showed severe alterations in …

Stability of impulsive differential systems

2013

The asymptotic phase property and reduction principle for stability of a trivial solution is generalized to the case of the noninvertible impulsive differential equations in Banach spaces whose linear parts split into two parts and satisfy the condition of separation.

Observer-Based ${H}_{\infty }$ Control Design for Nonlinear Networked Control Systems with Limited Information

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/604249 Open Access This paper is concerned with the problem of designing a robust observer-based H∞ controller for discrete-time networked systems with limited information. An improved networked control system model is proposed and the effects of random packet dropout, time-varying delay, and quantization are considered simultaneously. Based on the obtained model, a stability criterion is developed by constructing an appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and sufficient conditions for the existence of a dynamic quantized output feedback cont…

A New Unsupervised Neural Network for Pattern Recognition with Spiking Neurons

2006

In this paper we propose a three-layered neural network for binary pattern recognition and memorization. Unlike the classic approach to pattern recognition, our net works organizing itself in an unsupervised way, to distinguish beetween different patterns or to recognize similar ones. If we present a binary input to the first layer, after some time steps we could read the output of the net in the third layer, as one and only one neuron activating with high firing rate; the middle layer will act as a generalization layer, i.e. similar pattern will have similar (or the same) representation in the middle layer. We used learning algorithms inspired from other works or from biological data to ac…

The SESAMO early warning system for rainfall-triggered landslides

2016

The development of Web-based information systems coupled with advanced monitoring systems could prove to be extremely useful in landslide risk management and mitigation. A new frontier in the field of rainfall-triggered landslides (RTLs) lies in the real-time modelling of the relationship between rainfall and slope stability; this requires an intensive monitoring of some key parameters that could be achieved through the use of modern and often low-cost technologies. This work describes an integrated information system for early warning of RTLs that has been deployed and tested, in a prototypal form, for an Italian pilot site. The core of the proposed system is a wireless sensor network coll…

Global exponential stability of delayed Markovian jump fuzzy cellular neural networks with generally incomplete transition probability

2014

The problem of global exponential stability in mean square of delayed Markovian jump fuzzy cellular neural networks (DMJFCNNs) with generally uncertain transition rates (GUTRs) is investigated in this paper. In this GUTR neural network model, each transition rate can be completely unknown or only its estimate value is known. This new uncertain model is more general than the existing ones. By constructing suitable Lyapunov functionals, several sufficient conditions on the exponential stability in mean square of its equilibrium solution are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our res…
