Linfomas malignos primários nas glandulas salivares

2011

Primary malignant lymphomas in the salivary glands are relatively rare. Clinical presentation is not characteristic and the disease is often overlooked resulting in diagnosis and treatment delays. AIM: To stress the importance of the diagnostic process and combined management, we present a series of eight patients with malignant lymphoma of the parotid who were diagnosed only after surgery and managed with radiation and chemotherapy. METHODS: Retrospective series of patients with primary malignant lymphoma of the parotid gland managed with radiotherapy and diagnostic surgical partial resection. RESULTS: After treatment completion we achieved a loco-regional control rate of 87.5%. Toxicity w…

Impact of end-stage renal disease care in planned dialysis start and type of renal replacement therapy--a Spanish multicentre experience.

2006

Background. Timely referral, preparation and initiation of dialysis remain problematic issues. The purpose of this study is to analyse the effect of chronic renal disease care and education on the mode of dialysis start (planned vs non-planned) and on the modality of renal replacement therapy (RRT). Methods. A total of 1504 patients from 35 hospitals started RRT in 2003. Out-patient, scheduled initiation of dialysis with a permanent vascular or peritoneal access was considered planned. Results. About 46% of the patients started non-planned dialysis. Of all the patients, 75% had 3 months of nephrological follow-up, but nearly half were never educated on dialysis options. Haemodialysis (HD) o…

Neourethra: a new two-stage procedure for reconstruction of the functional urethra.

1983

Abstract In 14 male dogs, the functional urethra was replaced by a bladder flap tube in a 2-stage procedure. In the 1st stage of the operation a bipedicle strip from the anterior bladder wall was tubularized around a 10F or 12F catheter. After 10 to 12 weeks the 2nd stage of the procedure was performed: the bladder neck was transected and sutured, and the cranial pedicle of the bipedicle tube was transected and pulled through the bluntly dissected pelvic floor muscles. From the distal end of the tube a perineal urostoma was created to facilitate radiological and urodynamic followup. Eight dogs completed a followup 5 months after the 2nd procedure. Urodynamic and x-ray studies were done preo…

Prognostic factors associated with overall survival in patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma

2020

Background Low socioeconomic status, increasing age, and poor lifestyle behaviors are associated with poor survival in patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). To determine the overall survival (OS) and the risk of OCSCC death by tumor subsite. Material and Methods A retrospective cohort study of OCSCC patients diagnosed from 2007 to 2009 and treated at a single cancer center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Patient information was obtained from the Hospital Cancer Registry (HCR) database and complemented by individual search of physical and electronic medical records. Descriptive statistics of population characteristics were computed. OS was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier met…

Different Prevalence of Alarm, Dyspeptic and Reflux Symptoms in Patients with Cardia and Non-cardia Gastric Cancer.

2021

Background and Aims: Symptoms of patients with gastric cancer (GC) are often unspecific and differences in symptoms between patients with cardia and non-cardia GC have been poorly investigated. We aimed to characterize symptoms of patients with cardia and non-cardia GC.
Methods: Patients with cardia (Siewert type II and III) and non-cardia GC were recruited in the German multicenter cohort of the Gastric Cancer Research (staR) study between 2013 and 2017. Alarm, dyspeptic and reflux symptoms at the time of presentation were documented using a self-administered questionnaire.
Results: A completed self-administered questionnaire was available for 568/759 recruited patients (132 ca…

Assessment of cerebral microbleeds by susceptibility-weighted imaging at 3T in patients with end-stage organ failure

2018

Purpose: Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are small rounded lesions representing cerebral hemosiderin deposits surrounded by macrophages that results from previous microhemorrhages. The aim of this study was to review the distribution of cerebral microbleeds in patients with end-stage organ failure and their association with specific end-stage organ failure risk factors. Materials and methods: Between August 2015 and June 2017, we evaluated 15 patients, 9 males, and 6 females, (mean age 65.5 years). Patients population was subdivided into three groups according to the organ failure: (a) chronic kidney failure (n = 8), (b) restrictive cardiomyopathy undergoing heart transplantation (n = 1), and (…

Interleukin‐6 concentration changes in plasma and saliva in bisphosphonate‐related osteonecrosis of the jaws

2013

To determine the plasma and saliva levels of IL-6 in patients with bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) and to investigate whether there is a correlation between more advanced stages of BRONJ and levels of IL-6.We studied three groups: group 1 consisted of 30 patients with BRONJ due to intravenous bisphosphonates (ivBP), group 2 consisted of 25 patients treated with ivBP but without BRONJ, and group 3 consisted of 15 healthy controls. In each case, we assayed plasma and saliva IL-6 samples using an ELISA test.Significantly, higher IL-6 values were found in both saliva and plasma in group 1 vs groups 2 and 3 (P  0.01). Group 1 showed no differences in plasma or saliva IL-…

A Propeller Flap for Single-Stage Nose Reconstruction in Selected Patients: Supratrochlear Artery Axial Propeller Flap

2014

The paramedian forehead flap is the gold standard technique for nose reconstruction. It requires two different surgical operations which prolonged the postoperative dressing and care. We present our 5-year experience with a propeller flap based on the supratrochlear artery, which allows one-stage transfer of the forehead skin to the nose without the need for pedicle division. This technique is indicated in a selected group of patients who are not suitable for multiple-stage reconstructions because they have concurrent medical conditions, reduced mobility, or live far away from specialized medical centers. We have renamed this procedure as supratrochlear artery axial propeller flap, from the…

Impact of Accessory Renal Artery Coverage on Renal Function during Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair.

2021

Background Long-term outcomes of accessory renal artery (ARA) coverage after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) are unknown. We analyzed the impact of ARA coverage on renal function long-term. Methods This retrospective, monocentric study included patients treated by EVAR between 2008 and 2016. Patients with at least one ARA covered with EVAR (ARA group) were compared with patients with no covered ARA (control group). Renal function was determined by estimating the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and graded according to chronic kidney disease (CKD) classification stages. Results A total of 184 patients were included (ARA group, n = 25; control group, n = 159). Renal risk factors were sim…
