Neurons of the dentate molecular layer in the rabbit hippocampus.
2012
The molecular layer of the dentate gyrus appears as the main entrance gate for information into the hippocampus, i.e., where the perforant path axons from the entorhinal cortex synapse onto the spines and dendrites of granule cells. A few dispersed neuronal somata appear intermingled in between and probably control the flow of information in this area. In rabbits, the number of neurons in the molecular layer increases in the first week of postnatal life and then stabilizes to appear permanent and heterogeneous over the individuals' life span, including old animals. By means of Golgi impregnations, NADPH histochemistry, immunocytochemical stainings and intracellular labelings (lucifer yellow…
The evaluation of changes in maxillofacial bones using cone beam tomography in acromegaly
2022
BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to evaluate the changes in craniofacial dimensions of newly diagnosed and untreated acromegaly patients, patients with non-functional pituitary adenoma and healthy individuals on Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 50 newly diagnosed acromegaly patients who did not receive any treatment for acromegaly were included in the study (Group A). Twenty patients with nonfunctional pituitary adenoma (Group B) and 30 healthy individuals were included (Group C). Linear, angular and volumetric measurements were performed. RESULTS: Mandibular length showed significant difference in acromegaly patients, and maxillar length statistically signifi…
Valorisation of industrial iron oxide waste to produce magnetic barium hexaferrite
2016
Barium M-type hexagonal ferrite (BaM, BaFe12O19) is an immensely important magnetic material, which we have successfully made from the simple valorisation of Fe-rich industrial waste from steel wire drawing, with addition of BaCO3 and heating in air to 1000 degrees C. The optimum ratio of Fe. Ba (producing 86 wt% BaM) was found to be 11: 1 (non-stoichiometric), and secondary phases of alpha-Fe2O3 (non-magnetic) and ZnFe2O4 (poorly antiferromagnetic) were always present. This material consisted of small submicron platelets. A hard magnetic ferrite was produced with Ms=48.6 A m(2) kg(-1) and H-c=211.5 kA m(-1). The highest density was achieved by sintering samples with Fe: Ba ratios of 11: 1 …
Dimethylsulfoxide as carrier in enzyme cytochemistry.
1971
Addition of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) to the incubation medium of succinate dehydrogenase in a concentration of 10% enhances the staining reaction in the hyphae of the fungus Cercosporella herpotrichoides after an incubation period of 15 min. Controls without DMSO remain unstained. DMSO causes a rapid penetration of the components of the medium through the mucilage that covers the hyphae.
Proton exchange membrane fuel cell made of magnetron sputtered Pt–CeO and Pt–Co thin film catalysts
2015
Abstract Preparation of catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is of growing interest during last years. The magnetron sputtering technique is a promising method of catalyst preparation because it permits to synthesize catalysts in a fast and relatively less expensive way, however control of specific surface and durability of such catalysts still remains the main concern. We tested a single cell PEMFC catalyzed by using exclusively thin film approach by combining state-of-the art Pt-doped cerium oxide anode and a new Pt–Co alloy cathode. We have shown that beside very high mass activity of the catalysts relative to the membrane electrode assembly the catalyst nanoporous …
Sustainable viticulure in Brazil's context : a proposition
2015
The thesis involves the proposition of a framework for the sustainability of viticulture in Brazil using a territorial approach built from two exploratory studies in Brazilian wine regions of Campanha Gaúcha and Vale do São Francisco based on preliminary studies. Those studies involved technical visits in three countries (France, Italy and Spain) and frameworks’ observations in another five (South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, USA and Chile). The framework proposed is called BaccuS. It is structured on a matrix basis, with an axis corresponding to dimensions and other to guidelines, both in ascending order of complexity and development. There are eighteen topics that represent areas to ac…
Revisiting the happy-productive worker thesis from a eudaimonic perspective: a systematic review
2021
The happy-productive worker thesis (HPWT) is considered the Holy Grail of management research, and it proposes caeteris paribus, happy workers show higher performance than their unhappy counterparts. However, eudaimonic well-being in the relationship between happiness and performance has been understudied. This paper provides a systematized review of empirical evidence in order to make a theoretical contribution to the happy-productive worker thesis from a eudaimonic perspective. Our review covers 105 quantitative studies and 188 relationships between eudaimonic well-being and performance. Results reveal that analyzing the eudaimonic facet of well-being provides general support for the HPWT…
Efficient and rapid transformation of high silica CHA zeolite from FAU zeolite in the absence of water
2017
High silica CHA zeolite plays an important role in selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR), but its synthesis is not highly efficient due to the use of a relatively high-cost structural directing agent (SDA) N,N,N-trimethyl-adamantammonium hydroxide (TMAdaOH) and relatively long crystallization time under hydrothermal conditions. Herein, we report an efficient and rapid synthesis of a high silica CHA zeolite possessing good crystallinity and uniform crystals (CHA-ST). The method includes interzeolite transformation of high silica FAU zeolite in the absence of water but the presence of zeolite seeds and a bromide form of the SDA. The absence of water in the synthesis signific…
A Basic View on Models of Nature and the Concept of “Sustainability”
2010
The discussion below is primarily connected to the challenge of agricultural crop production in western and northern Europe by the global change of climate (Box IV.3), but the ideas are of a general character and could therefore be extended outside this geographical area. We believe that strategic thinking and strategic decisions on agriculture and the way of preparing tactical decisions have to be reconsidered everywhere.
A joint action of deep eutectic solvents and ultrasound to promote Diels−Alder reaction in a sustainable way
2020
The need to reduce environmental impact of chemical processes has induced a surge of attention in the choice of solvent and methodologies to carry them out. In this context, we studied the Diels−Alder reaction using N-ethylmaleimide as dienophile and changing the nature of the diene in deep eutectic solvents (DES) under both conventional heating and ultrasonic activation. DES obtained by the combination of different hydrogen bond acceptors and donors allowed assessing the role played by solvent nature. DES proved suitable solvent media for the target reaction, allowing higher yields and faster reactions compared to conventional organic solvents. The trend of yields, both in silent and under…
