Monitoring the issue arenas of the swine‐flu discussion
2013
PurposeThis paper seeks to describe the changing organizational environment and stakeholder debate currently taking place in various “issue arenas” during a crisis. Organizations today need to find and monitor these arenas before being able to communicate with their stakeholders.Design/methodology/approachCommunications of authorities and discussions by citizens are studied and analyzed in a case study related to the 2009 swine flu or influenza A (H1N1) episode in Finland. The organizational point of view is studied through media releases of the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), and the citizen point of view through a content analysis of popular discussion online forums throu…
The essentials of marine biotechnology
2021
Coastal countries have traditionally relied on the existing marine resources (e.g., fishing, food, transport, recreation, and tourism) as well as tried to support new economic endeavors (ocean energy, desalination for water supply, and seabed mining). Modern societies and lifestyle resulted in an increased demand for dietary diversity, better health and well-being, new biomedicines, natural cosmeceuticals, environmental conservation, and sustainable energy sources. These societal needs stimulated the interest of researchers on the diverse and underexplored marine environments as promising and sustainable sources of biomolecules and biomass, and they are addressed by the emerging field of ma…
Configurations of the Interactive Use of Environmental Management Control
2013
This paper explores the use of interactive environmental management control. In order to do this, a theoretical model is designed drawing on the framework of Simons (1995) and instrumental stakeholder theory. This model defines three dimensions of interactive control: forms of interactivity (vertical, horizontal, external), frequencies of interactivity (high, medium, low) and decision levels (strategic, tactical, operational). Four typical configurations emerge from application of the model to empirical data from ten case studies: eco-designers, eco-institutionals, eco-managers and eco-educators. These configurations show the diverse roles of interactive environmental management control in …
Challenges of tourism development in winter sports destinations and for post-event tourism marketing: the cases of the Ramsau Nordic Ski World Champi…
2013
Previous research on winter sport destinations which have hosted big sport events suggested that there is a gap between the relevance of the systematic considerations of the specific challenges of tourism destination marketing and common practice. The study therefore investigates through individual interviews with key stakeholders (1) the level of agreement with central theoretical statements among stakeholders and key decision-makers at the Austrian destinations Ramsau (a traditional Nordic destination) and St Anton (a traditional Alpine destination) and (2) the relevance of this knowledge to the practical work of the key decision-makers at the destinations. The results show that there is …
Competing economies of worth in a multiagency music and reconciliation partnership: The Sri Lanka Norway Music Cooperation (2009-2018)
2020
The Sri Lanka Norway Music Cooperation (2009–2018) was launched to ‘stimulate the performing arts in Sri Lanka, thus contributing to the peace and reconciliation process’ in the aftermath of almost three decades of civil war between the Tamil minority and Sinhala majority populations of the island. Funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the project had many local and international stakeholders, from artists and civil society organisations, to government institutions, to a general public eager for enrichment through arts and culture. But despite high engagement and financial investment, the achievements of the SLNMC were generally unremarkable and short-term. This article argue…

2020
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to review the extant literature on chatbots and stakeholder interactions to identify major trends and shed light on knowledge gaps.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review was conducted combining qualitative and quantitative approaches. A code book based on early systematic literature reviews was developed and used to extract information from 62 discrete peer-reviewed English articles. Blame game or dialogue? Financial, professional and democratic accountabilities in a complex health care setting
2018
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the complexity of the network governance setting affects accountability practices. The authors pay particular attention to the organizational characteristics that may enable a common understanding of multiple accountability relationships, or lead to problems in reconciling competing forms of accountability, thereby appearing as blame game-type behavior. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a case study with 31 semi-structured interviews in a Finnish health care organization (FHC) that offers basic public health care services. The organization represents a co-operative arrangement with the main city and three smaller munic…
Roles Of Stakeholders In Strategic Decision-Making Of Microfinance Organizations
2009
Microfinance organizations provide financial services to low income people. These organizations have been increasing dramatically worldwide. This increment calls attention for these organizations and their boards to make strategic decisions which enable them perform well and compete with each other. Based on literature, this paper identifies six types of microfinance stakeholders who sit on boards. These are clients, employees, government, donors, creditors and owners. The paper discusses different roles of these stakeholders when they sit on boards of Microfinance Organizations. These roles are further explained to show how they contribute to the process of making strategic decisions. Lite…
From Rationality to Emotionally Embedded Relations: Envy as a Signal of Power in Stakeholder Relations
2015
Although stakeholder salience theory has received a great deal of scholarly attention in the business ethics and management literature, the theory has been criticized for overemphasizing rationality in managerial perceptions. We argue that it is important to better understand what socially constructed emotions signal in business relations, and we posit the role of envy as a discursive resource used to signal and construct the asymmetrical power relations between small business owner–managers and their stakeholders. Our study is based on a qualitative study on discursive accounts elicited from 33 interviews with small business owner–managers in Finland. Our study makes two primary contributi…
