Evidence for eight node mixed-symmetry superconductivity in a correlated organic metal

2015

We report a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the superconducting state in the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $\kappa$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br. Applying spin-fluctuation theory to a low-energy material-specific Hamiltonian derived from ab initio density functional theory we calculate the quasiparticle density of states in the superconducting state. We find a distinct three-peak structure that results from a strongly anisotropic mixed-symmetry superconducting gap with eight nodes and twofold rotational symmetry. This theoretical prediction is supported by low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy on in situ cleaved single crystals of $\kappa$-(ET)$_2$…

Prediction of pressure-induced superconductivity in the novel ternary system ScCaH2n (n = 1–6)

2021

Hydrogen-rich systems are currently thought to constitute the most promising potential high-temperature superconductor materials. Here, the high-pressure structure and superconductivity of the ternary hydrogen-rich system ScCaH2n (n = 1–6) are systematically investigated by using the prediction method of particle swarm optimization structure combined with first-principles calculations. As n increases, the electron local function (ELF) indicates that the hydrogen atoms in this system exhibit different behaviors corresponding to single H atoms, H2 molecules, graphene-like layers and, ultimately, H clathrate cages. The electron phonon coupling (EPC) calculation shows that the superconducting t…

New Alliances in Post-Brexit Europe: Does the New Hanseatic League Revive Nordic Political Cooperation?

2020

As Brexit removes the Nordic countries’ most powerful ally from the EU, what does this imply for their approach to European affairs? The literature on small states within the EU suggests that they can counterbalance limited bargaining capacities by entering two types of alliances: strategic partnerships with bigger member states and institutionalised cooperation on a regional basis. Against this backdrop we ask whether, by significantly raising the costs of non-cooperation for Nordic governments, the Brexit referendum has triggered a revival of Nordic political cooperation. We scrutinise this conjecture by analysing Nordic strategies of coalition-building on EU financial and budgetary polic…

Atomistic Calculations of Positron Surface States

1983

We report on the results of an atomistic, discrete-lattice calculation of positron surface states on the three principal surfaces of Al and Cu. We are able to (i) accurately reproduce the observed values and anisotropy of the binding energies, and (ii) predict the surface state life times. Furthermore, we calculate (iii) the positron lateral diffusion constant, and find it considerably enhanced over the bulk value. We also investigate (iv) the positron trapping at surface vacancies, and (v) the effect of ordered chemisorbed monolayers of oxygen. We find that the oxidation lowers the binding energy and makes the surface state unstable with respect to positronium emission on Al (100) and Al (…

Shell structure in large nonspherical metal clusters.

1992

Electronic shell structure of icosahedral and cuboctahedral sodium clusters with 300 to 1500 atoms has been studied using a potential-well approximation for the effective one-electron potential. The results show that icosahedral clusters yield the same shell structure as spherical clusters up to the cluster size of about 500 atoms and that similarities persist until the cluster has about 1000 atoms. The shell structure of a cuboctahedral geometry begins to deviate from that of a sphere when the cluster size is about 100. A study on quadrupole deformations of large clusters shows that surface fluctuations in liquid clusters cannot destroy the shell structure even in the largest clusters.

Theory of positronium momentum spectra at metallic surfaces

1986

Theoretical calculations of momentum distributions of positronium (Ps) atoms ejected from clean metal surfaces are presented and compared with recent experimental results. The authors find that the momentum dependence of the Ps-forming interaction significantly affects the shape of the spectra. They also show that, within the model, the energy distribution of Ps atoms does not vary directly with the density of electronic states just outside the surface.

Conceptualising State-Controlled Resort Islands for an Environment-Friendly Development of Tourism: The Maldivian Experience

2001

The Maldives host a sophisticated and competitive international tourist industry which has replaced fishing as the dominant economic activity. With their rich tropical reef ecosystems and the abundant biodiversity of their marine environment, a total of 86 uninhabited islands had been converted into Resort Islands by the end of 2000. Resort Islands are equipped with comprehensive facilities for accommodation, food, recreation and leisure. They are also strictly reserved for foreign tourists and guarantee complete privacy. This gives the benefit of averting conflicts of acculturation with local islanders. In the arena of impacts on the physical environment, however, the consumptive leisure l…

Urinary Diversion: How Experts Divert

2014

To determine the rates of the available urinary diversion options for patients treated with radical cystectomy for bladder cancer in different settings (pioneering institutions, leading urologic oncology centers, and population based).Population-based data from the literature included all patients (n = 7608) treated in Sweden during the period 1964-2008, from Germany (n = 14,200) for the years 2008 and 2011, US patients (identified from National Inpatient Sample during 1998-2005, 35,370 patients and 2001-2008, 55,187 patients), and from Medicare (n = 22,600) for the years 1992, 1995, 1998, and 2001. Cooperative Thermal and Optical Switching of Spin States in a New Two-Dimensional Coordination Polymer

2003

{Fe(pmd)2[Cu(CN)2]2} (pmd = pyrimidine) displays a rigid two-dimensional structure and undergoes thermal- and optical-driven spin crossover behaviour; cooperative elastic coupling between iron(II) ions in the framework induces thermal hysteresis in the HS↔LS conversion and sigmoidal HS→LS relaxation of the photo-induced HS state at low temperatures. Alternative approach to populate and study the $^{229}Th$ nuclear clock isomer

2019

A new approach to observe the radiative decay of the $^{229}$Th nuclear isomer, and to determine its energy and radiative lifetime, is presented. Situated at a uniquely low excitation energy, this nuclear state might be a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, a nuclear laser and the search for time variations of the fundamental constants. The isomer's $\gamma$ decay towards the ground state will be studied with a high-resolution VUV spectrometer after its production by the $\beta$ decay of $^{229}$Ac. The novel production method presents a number of advantages asserting its competitive nature with respect to the commonly used $^{233}$U $\alpha$-decay recoil source. In this …
