Automated classification of focal breast lesions according to S-detect: validation and role as a clinical and teaching tool
2018
Abstract PURPOSE: To assess the diagnostic performance and the potential as a teaching tool of S-detect in the assessment of focal breast lesions. METHODS: 61 patients (age 21-84 years) with benign breast lesions in follow-up or candidate to pathological sampling or with suspicious lesions candidate to biopsy were enrolled. The study was based on a prospective and on a retrospective phase. In the prospective phase, after completion of baseline US by an experienced breast radiologist and S-detect assessment, 5 operators with different experience and dedication to breast radiology performed elastographic exams. In the retrospective phase, the 5 operators performed a retrospective assessment a…
Primary structure and unusual carbohydrate moiety of functional unit 2-c of keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH)
1999
Abstract The complete amino acid sequence of the Megathura crenulata hemocyanin functional unit KLH2-c was determined by direct sequencing and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry of the protein, and of peptides obtained by cleavage with EndoLysC proteinase, chymotrypsin and cyanogen bromide. This is the first complete primary structure of a functional unit c from a gastropod hemocyanin. KLH2-c consists of 420 amino acid residues. Circular dichroism spectra indicated approx. 31% β-sheet and 29% α-helix contents. A multiple sequence alignment with other molluscan hemocyanin functional units revealed average identities between 41 and 49%, but 55% in case of Octopus he…
Small bowel motility: relationship between smooth muscle contraction and electroenterogram signal.
2000
A study is made to correlate the electrical and mechanical activity of the smooth muscle of the small bowel. Bioelectrical signal recording from the intestinal serosa (electroenterogram) comprises a slow wave (SW) and spike burst (SB), though only the latter reflects intestinal pressure. The electroenterogram and smooth muscle pressure are simultaneously recorded in the canine small bowel. Spectral and time series analysis of the electroenterogram are performed to establish those electrical parameters that best reflect intestinal pressure. The results reveal an underlying correlation between the estimated parameters of electrical activity and smooth muscle pressure. In addition, parameters …
Multi-system machine translation using online APIs for English-Latvian
2015
This paper describes a hybrid machine translation (HMT) system that employs several online MT system application program interfaces (APIs) forming a MultiSystem Machine Translation (MSMT) approach. The goal is to improve the automated translation of English – Latvian texts over each of the individual MT APIs. The selection of the best hypothesis translation is done by calculating the perplexity for each hypothesis. Experiment results show a slight improvement of BLEU score and WER (word error rate).
K-Translate - Interactive Multi-system Machine Translation
2016
The tool described in this article has been designed to help machine translation (MT) researchers to combine and evaluate various MT engine outputs through a web-based graphical user interface using syntactic analysis and language modelling. The tool supports user provided translations as well as translations from popular online MT system application program interfaces (APIs). The selection of the best translation hypothesis is done by calculating the perplexity for each hypothesis. The evaluation panel provides sentence tree graphs and chunk statistics. The result is a syntax-based multi-system translation tool that shows an improvement of BLEU scores compared to the best individual baseli…
Why people engage in supplemental work: The role of technology, response expectations, and communication persistence
2021
Supported by various collaboration technologies that allow communication from any place or time, employees increasingly engage in technology-assisted supplemental work (TASW). Challenges associated with managing work and non-work time have been further complicated by a global pandemic that has altered traditional work patterns and locations. To date studies applying a TASW framework have focused mainly on individual uses of technology or connectivity behaviors, and not considered the potential team and social pressures underlying these processes. This study provides clarity on the differences between technology use and TASW and sheds light on the drivers of TASW in a work environment charac…
Exploring the anticancer activity and the mechanism of action of pyrrolomycins F obtained by microwave-assisted total synthesis
2023
Pyrrolomycins (PMs) are a family of naturally occurring antibiotic agents, isolated from the fermentation broth of Actinosporangium and Streptomyces species. Pursuing our studies on pyrrolomycins, we performed the total synthesis of the F-series pyrrolomycins (1–4) by microwave-assisted synthesis (MAOS), thus obtaining the title compounds in excellent yields (63–69%). Considering that there is no evidence so far of the anticancer effect of this class of compounds, we investigated PMs for their antiproliferative activity against HCT116 and MCF-7 cancer cell lines. PMs showed anticancer activity at submicromolar level with a minimal effect on normal epithelial cell line (hTERT RPE-1), and the…
Investigation of various shellac grades: additional analysis for identity.
2009
Background: A number of different grades of shellac are commercially available and most of them are known only as generic shellac and are not further differentiated. The investigated grades of shellac in this study are based on different insect strains, host trees, refining methods, and products from different suppliers. Method: The Gardner/Iodine color values of alcoholic and aqueous solutions of the various shellac grades were measured. Glass transition temperatures and pKa-values were determined. To assess chemical differences in the tested shellac grades, MALDI-TOF analysis was performed. Results: Differences were found in color, TG, and pKa-values and in the mass spectra by MALDI-TOF a…
Long term outcomes of pharmacological treatments for opioid dependence: does methadone still lead the pack?
2014
The aim of this review was to update and summarize the scientific knowledge on the long term outcomes of the different pharmacological treatment options for opioid dependence currently available and to provide a critical discussion on the different treatment options based on these results. We performed a literature search using the PubMed databases and the reference lists of the identified articles. Data from research show that the three pharmacological options reviewed are effective treatments for opioid dependence with positive long term outcomes. However, each one has its specific target population and setting. While methadone and buprenorphine are first line options, heroin-assisted tre…
Enhanced chemiluminescent determination of chloramphenicol and related nitro compounds by ‘on-line’ photochemical reaction
2000
The viability of tandem photochemical reaction-chemiluminescence detection was studied for a heterogeneous family of nitro compounds using chloramphenicol as a test substance. The 'on-line' chemical photodegradation of chloramphenicol was performed in a flow injection assembly by using a photoreactor consisting of a 725 cm x 0.5 mm id piece of PTFE tubing coiled around an 8 W low-pressure mercury lamp. Photodegraded chloramphenicol was detected by oxidizing photo-fragments from the parent compound and their subsequent reaction with a luminol-Co(II) system. The calibration graph was linear up to 3 x 10(-5) mol l-1 chloramphenicol, the limit of detection was 3 x 10(-9) mol l-1, the relative s…
