Cluster and Periodic Calculations of the Ethene Protonation Reaction Catalyzed by theta-1 Zeolite: Influence of Method, Model Size, and Structural Co…

2001

The protonation of ethene by three different acid sites of theta-1 zeolite was theoretically studied to analyze the extent and relevance of the following aspects of heterogeneous catalysis: the local geometry of the Bronsted acid site in a particular zeolite, the size of the cluster used to model the catalyst, the degree of geometry relaxation around the active site, and the effects related to medium- and long-range interactions between the reaction site and its environment. It has been found that while the reaction energy is very sensitive to the local geometry of the site, the activation energy is mainly affected by the methodology used and by electrostatic effects on account of the carbo…

The Difference in Verbal aggressiveness Between the United States and Thailand

2013

This study analyzes the verbal aggressiveness of Americans (n = 592) and Thais (n = 232). Specifically, the analysis of this convenience sample revealed that Thais are more verbally aggressive than Americans. Cultural differences between the 2 nations are discussed as explanations for differences between the 2 nations in verbal aggressiveness.

A High Sensitive Nested PCR for Toxoplasma gondii Detection in Animal and Food Samples

2013

Toxoplasma gondii is a major food and waterborne transmitted parasite world-wide. The tissues and meat samples of many warm blooded animals can contain tissues cysts from chronic toxoplasmosis. Water and vegetable can be contaminated by the parasitic oocysts shed through the feces of infected cats, representing the definitive host of the parasite. A sensitive PCR for Toxoplasma gondii detection is described. The first step amplified the region between the 28S and 18S rDNA in the closely related T. gondii and Neospora caninum; RFLP analysis distinguished the DNA from the two morphologically identical parasites. Although N. caninum is not involved in human transmission, so far, it is importan…

Application of MALDI-TOF-MS and nested SAPD-PCR for discrimination ofOenococcus oeniisolates at the strain level

2015

Oenococcus oeni is the most important lactic acid bacterium during vinification and is frequently used as a commercial starter culture for malolactic fermentation. Since different strains exhibit a high heterogeneity concerning wine-related physiological characteristics, reliable methods for their differentiation at the strain level are needed, especially for the development of starter cultures. Microbial identification by using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) has increased over the last few years. In the present study, we used MALDI-TOF-MS for the differentiation of 11 O. oeni isolates originating from 5 different wine-growing reg…

Effects of ultrasound and high pressure on physicochemical properties and HMF formation in Turkish honey types

2018

Abstract In industrial production, thermal processing of honey at 50 °C commonly induces liquefaction, i.e. it reduces the crystal count and viscosity and delays any subsequent crystallization. Unfortunately, thermal treatment can generate toxic 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), thereby resulting in quality reduction. Considering this, the present work aims at evaluating the influence of (two) processing technologies as alternatives to thermal processing of honey, namely high hydrostatic pressure (HHP; P = 220–330 MPa, T = 50/60 °C, t = 23/106 min), and ultrasound processing (US; at 24 kHz). The quality parameters evaluated for honey included liquefaction time, HMF content, diastase number, co…

Steppes of Southern Siberia - Experiences from the 6th EDGG Research Expedition to Khakassia, Russia (22 July – 1 August 2013)

2013

The 6th EDGG Research Expedition took place in summer 2013 in the Kuznetsky Alatau Mountains, part of the Altai-Sayanian mountain region (Republic of Khakassia, Russia). A group of 14 scientists from seven countries studied the variety of steppe vegetation in two regions of the "Khakassky" Reserve – Lake Itkul (Shira region) and Podzaploty (Ordzhenikidzevsky region). Standardised sampling procedures including nested-plot series and phytosociological relevés of 10-m2 plots were used to sample steppes of European-Siberian (Festuco-Brometea) and Central Asian (Cleistogenetea squarrosae) types. All terricolous plants present in the plots were sampled, including perennial and annual vascular pla…

Trusted Computing and DRM

2015

Trusted Computing is a special branch of computer security. One branch of computer security involves protection of systems against external attacks. In that branch we include all methods that are used by system owners against external attackers, for example Firewalls, IDS, IPS etc. In all those cases the system owner installs software that uses its own means to determine if a remote user is malicious and terminates the attack. (Such means can be very simple such as detecting signatures of attacks or very complex such as machine learning and detecting anomalies in the usage pattern of the remote user). Another branch of attacks requires protection by the system owner against internal users. …

Three-dimensional object detection under arbitrary lighting conditions

2006

A novel method of 3D object recognition independent of lighting conditions is presented. The recognition model is based on a vector space representation using an orthonormal basis generated by the Lambertian reflectance functions obtained with distant light sources. Changing the lighting conditions corresponds to multiplying the elementary images by a constant factor and because of that, all possible lighting views will be elements that belong to that vector space. The recognition method proposed is based on the calculation of the angle between the vector associated with a certain illuminated 3D object and that subspace. We define the angle in terms of linear correlations to get shift and i…
