Accuracy of automatic airway morphometry in computed tomography-correlation of radiological-pathological findings.

2010

Abstract Objectives Airway morphology shows characteristic changes in different pathologies. This study assesses the accuracy of a current automatic airway assessment technique by correlating CT images of porcine airways to histological slices of the same localization. Materials and methods Four isolated and ventilated porcine lungs were frozen in a liquid nitrogen bath and examined with a CT scanner (MDCT). This technique both preserved normal radiomorphological appearance and made it possible to slice the specimens for histological examination for subsequent correlation. The parameters wall thickness (WT), wall percentage (WP), and total diameter (TD) were assessed by computer-aided measu…

Video-assisted two-stage basilic vein transposition for creation of brachio-basilic arteriovenous fistulae

2012

We report our experience in a mixed minimally-in- vasive technique for the two-stage transposition of basilic vein on a small series of eight patients. The operative tech- nique consisted of a modified endoscopic (1) approach for the two-stage transposition (2). The intervention was performed under Brachial Plexus Block (3).

Is Kelami's Method Still Useful in the Smartphone Era? The Virtual 3-Dimensional Reconstruction of Penile Curvature in Patients With Peyronie's Disea…

2021

Abstract Background Peyronie's disease is an idiopathic fibrotic disease affecting the penile tunica albuginea. Among other resulting deformities, the more common penile curvature should be assessed preferentially with in-office goniometric estimation after pharmacologically induced erection, although clearly invasive and uncomfortable. Aim In the present pilot study, we investigated the usefulness for the patient and the surgeon of a 3-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the penile curvature obtained through photogrammetry software in clinical evaluation and surgical planning. Methods Enrolled patients received alprostadil 10 μg by intracavernous injection. Then, the medical personnel took …

Neurally adjusted ventilatory assist: An update

2014

Summary Neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA) is a new ventilation mode that provides a proportional assistance to the inspiratory effort of the patients. It is based on the use of the diaphragm electromyographic activity (Edi) for the control of the ventilation assistance. The ability of NAVA to improve the limitations of the conventional assisted ventilator modes has been assessed in clinical studies and discussed in this report, as the latest applications of NAVA in children and non-invasive ventilation, due to the improvement of the patient–ventilator interactions delivered by NAVA. We also review the most recent literature on a new trend to use the Edi as a predictor of weaning s…

What is the accuracy of the surgical guide in the planning of orthognathic surgeries? A systematic review.

2021

BACKGROUND To investigate the true accuracy of the surgical guide in the planning of orthognathic surgeries, which are performed worldwide. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed database, Web of science, Scopus and Embase, covering August 2020 to January 2021. Studies that included patients with dentofacial deformity including anteroposterior, vertical and asymmetry problems who were undergoing an orthognathic surgery procedure were included; QUADAS-2 was used to determine the risk of bias by analyzing the quality of the studies. A PRISMA (flowchart) was created to show the study selection, keywords, nomination processes, and inclusion and exclusion criteria. …

Implant-specific follow-up imaging of treated intracranial aneurysms: TOF-MRA vs. metal artifact reduced intravenous flat panel computed tomography a…

2017

Aim To compare the diagnostic quality of time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (TOF-MRA) and metal-artefact-reduction (MAR) flat-panel-detector computed tomography angiography (FPCTA) and to determine the imaging technique best suited for evaluation endovascular and surgically treated aneurysms. Methods The image quality of TOF-MRA and MAR-FPCTA of 44 intracranial implants (coiling: n= 20; clipping: n= 15; coiling + stenting: n= 9) in a patient cohort of 25 was evaluated by two independent readers. Images obtained using MAR-FPCTA (20 second scan time, 496 projections, intravenous contrast medium administration; Artis Zee, Siemens Healthcare, Forchheim) were compared with TOF-MRA-ima…

Recurrence quantification analysis as a tool for complex fractionated atrial electrogram discrimination

2012

International audience; Atrial fibrillation is the most encountered pathology of the heart rate. The reasons of its occurrence and its particular characteristics remain unknown, resulting from complex phenomena interaction. From these interactions emerges Complex Fractionated Atrial Electrograms (CFAE) which are useful for the ablation procedure. This study presents a method based on nonlinear data analysis, the Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA) applied on intracardiac atrial electrograms to detect CFAE particularities. The results obtained on areas previously tagged by a cardilogist show a good sensitivity to CFAE. Combination of RQA features offers a larger discrimination potential…

Ösophagusresektion bei unspezifischer Motilitätsstörung der Speiseröhre - Bedeutung der neuropathologischen Befunde

2005

A 47-year-old patient presented with a history of dysphagia for solid food for almost 10 years and weight loss of more than 50 kg. Non-resecting surgical as well as endoscopic procedures (laparoscopic cardiomyotomy with secondary antireflux operations, balloon dilation, Botulinum-toxin injection) were without success. A barium esophagogram showed a confinement of the distal esophagus with a filiform passage of the contrast medium and undigested food in the prestenotic dilated esophageal corpus. Manometry displayed a hypertensive lower esophageal sphincter with a resting pressure of 43.8 mmHg - although completely relaxing. The tubular esophagus was aperistaltic with 100 % simultaneous and r…
