Running time to recognize nonregular languages by 2-way probabilistic automata
1991
R. Freivalds proved that the language {0m1m} can be recognized by 2-way probabilistic finite automata (2pfa) with arbitrarily high probability 1-ɛ. A.G.Greenberg and A.Weiss proved that no 2pfa can recognize this language in expected time \(T(n) = c^\circ{(n)}\). For arbitrary languages C.Dwork and L.Stockmeyer showed somewhat less: if a language L is recognized by a 2pfa in expected time \(T(n) = c^{n^\circ{(1)} }\), then L is regular. First, we improve this theorem replacing the expected time by the time with probability 1-ɛ. On the other hand, time bound by C.Dwork and L.Stockmeyer cannot be improved: for arbitrary k≥2 we exhibit a specific nonregular language that can be recognized by 2…
A Test of the Relationship Between Argumentativeness and Individualism/Collectivism in the United States and Finland
2016
This study explored relationships between argumentativeness and collectivism/individualism in Finland and the United States. Data were gathered in the United States (n = 412) and Finland (n = 261). The analysis suggested: (a) collectivism was negatively correlated with argumentativeness, (b) individualism was positively correlated with argumentativeness, and (c) Finnish participants reported lower levels of argumentativeness than Americans. Cultural differences between the United States and Finland are discussed as reasons for the differences between the nations on argumentativeness.
Mediatisation in Twitter: an exploratory analysis of the 2015 Spanish general election
2019
[EN] The mediatisation model in politics assumes that media conveys political messages between parties and citizenship, with the risk of promoting issues that frame the electoral content in terms of competition. These dynamics could distract from the debate of ideas and political policies. However, digital media like Twitter provide direct communication channels between parties, candidates and users. The present research explores Twitter content during an electoral campaign focused on the four issues proposed by Patterson (1980) to assess mediatisation: political, policy, campaign and personal (regarding the candidate). The goal of this research study is to evaluate the degree of mediatisat…
Identifying individuality and variability in team tactics by means of statistical shape analysis and multilayer perceptrons.
2012
Abstract Offensive and defensive systems of play represent important aspects of team sports. They include the players’ positions at certain situations during a match, i.e., when players have to be on specific positions on the court. Patterns of play emerge based on the formations of the players on the court. Recognition of these patterns is important to react adequately and to adjust own strategies to the opponent. Furthermore, the ability to apply variable patterns of play seems to be promising since they make it harder for the opponent to adjust. The purpose of this study is to identify different team tactical patterns in volleyball and to analyze differences in variability. Overall 120 s…

Hypervisor-based Protection of Code
2019
The code of a compiled program is susceptible to reverse-engineering attacks on the algorithms and the business logic that are contained within the code. The main existing countermeasure to reverse-engineering is obfuscation. Generally, obfuscation methods suffer from two main deficiencies: 1) the obfuscated code is less efficient than the original and 2) with sufficient effort, the original code may be reconstructed. We propose a method that is based on cryptography and virtualization. The most valuable functions are encrypted and remain inaccessible even during their execution, thus preventing their reconstruction. A specially crafted hypervisor is responsible for decryption, execution, a…
Everyday Appropriations of Information Technology: A Study of Creative Uses of Digital Cameras
2011
Repurposive appropriation is a creative everyday act in which a user invents a novel use for information technology (IT) and adopts it. This study is the first to address its prevalence and predictability in the consumer IT context. In all, 2,379 respondents filled in an online questionnaire on creative uses of digital cameras, such as using them as scanners, periscopes, and storage media. The data reveal that such creative uses are adopted by about half of the users, on average, across different demographic backgrounds. Discovery of a creative use on one's own is slightly more common than is learning it from others. Most users discover the creative uses either completely on their own or wh…
Perceptual adaptive insensitivity for support vector machine image coding.
2005
Support vector machine (SVM) learning has been recently proposed for image compression in the frequency domain using a constant epsilon-insensitivity zone by Robinson and Kecman. However, according to the statistical properties of natural images and the properties of human perception, a constant insensitivity makes sense in the spatial domain but it is certainly not a good option in a frequency domain. In fact, in their approach, they made a fixed low-pass assumption as the number of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients to be used in the training was limited. This paper extends the work of Robinson and Kecman by proposing the use of adaptive insensitivity SVMs [2] for image coding u…
Distinct Patterns of Functional Connectivity During the Comprehension of Natural, Narrative Speech.
2020
Recent continuous task studies, such as narrative speech comprehension, show that fluctuations in brain functional connectivity (FC) are altered and enhanced compared to the resting state. Here, we characterized the fluctuations in FC during comprehension of speech and time-reversed speech conditions. The correlations of Hilbert envelope of source-level EEG data were used to quantify FC between spatially separate brain regions. A symmetric multivariate leakage correction was applied to address the signal leakage issue before calculating FC. The dynamic FC was estimated based on a sliding time window. Then, principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on individually concatenated and te…
