A concept for a magnetic particle imaging scanner with Halbach arrays

2020

Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a new medical imaging technique visualizing the concentration distribution of superparamagnetic nanoparticles used as tracer material. MPI is not yet in clinical routine, since one of the challenges is the upscaling of scanners. Typically, the magnetic fields of MPI scanners are generated electromagnetically, resulting in an immense power consumption but providing high flexibility in terms of adjusting the field strengths and very fast image acquisition rates. Permanent magnets provide high flux densities and do not need any power supply. However, the flux density is not adjustable, and a mechanical movement is slow compared to electromagnetically varying …

Compensation of missing wedge effects with sequential statistical reconstruction in electron tomography.

2014

Electron tomography (ET) of biological samples is used to study the organization and the structure of the whole cell and subcellular complexes in great detail. However, projections cannot be acquired over full tilt angle range with biological samples in electron microscopy. ET image reconstruction can be considered an ill-posed problem because of this missing information. This results in artifacts, seen as the loss of three-dimensional (3D) resolution in the reconstructed images. The goal of this study was to achieve isotropic resolution with a statistical reconstruction method, sequential maximum a posteriori expectation maximization (sMAP-EM), using no prior morphological knowledge about …

A software tool to acquire, synchronise and playback multimedia data: an application in kinesiology

2000

Assessing the physical condition of the human body frequently requires evaluating different tests performed by different devices. This information has to be analysed simultaneously to derive conclusions, and so a temporal relationship must be established between the data sources. In this paper, synchronisation of the sources of information is achieved by synchronising the clocks of computers connected in a Local Area Network. A clock synchronisation protocol is used and a global time is stamped in each information data flow. During analysis, the time-stamp is used to playback the data in a synchronised way. The proposed system is valid for any medical application in which data synchronisati…

A novel approach for analysis of oligonucleotide-cisplatin interactions by continuous elution gel electrophoresis coupled to isotope dilution inducti…

2008

In this work we present a novel approach for in vitro studies of cisplatin interactions with 8-mer oligonucleotides. The approach is based on the recently developed coupling of continuous elution gel electrophoresis (GE) to an inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometer (ICP-SFMS) with the aim of monitoring the interaction process between this cytostatic drug and the nucleotides. In contrast to existing methods, the electrophoretic separation conditions used here allow both the determination of the reaction kinetics in more detail as well as the observation of dominant intermediates. Two different nucleotides sequences have been investigated for comparison purposes, one contai…

Dopamine agonist cabergoline reduces hemoconcentration and ascites in hyperstimulated women undergoing assisted reproduction.

2007

Abstract Context: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) results from increased vascular permeability (VP) caused by ovarian hypersecretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which activates its receptor-2. In animals, the dopamine receptor 2 agonist cabergoline (Cb2) inactivates VEGF receptor-2 and prevents increased VP. Objective: Our objective was to test whether Cb2 reduces VP and prevents OHSS in humans. Design: We conducted a prospective, randomized, double-blind study on oocyte donors at risk of developing OHSS (>20 follicles, >12 mm developed, and >20 oocytes retrieved). Interventions: Cb2 0.5 mg/d (n = 37) or a placebo (n = 32) was administered fro…

Effects of different progesterone levels on reproductive outcomes in assisted reproductive technologies: from molecular basis to treatment strategies

2023

Purpose: The aim of this narrative review is to offer an overview about the role of progesterone levels on pregnancy outcome in patients undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs). Methods: A detailed computerized search of the literature was performed in the main electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science) to determine the importance of elevated progesterone levels at different stages of the cycle for pregnancy rates in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle. Our review also provides information on the differences between elevated progesterone levels and their interpretation in normal and in poorly responding women. Results: After careful evaluation, our search strateg…

Endoscopic surgery of the rhinobasis with a computer-assisted localizer

1996

The endoscope is useful for the diagnosis and surgical therapy of diseases of the nose, the paranasal sinuses and its neighboring regions, and allows for microinvasive, functional approaches. The reduced invasiveness of therapeutic procedures is sometimes accompanied by insufficient clearness of the surgical field, however. This significant problem is solved by the computer-assisted-surgery (CAS) system, an intraoperative localizer. It allows continuous orientation based on three-dimensional reconstructed preoperative CT scans with superimposed positioning of the endoscope. We have now adapted CAS for endoscopic sinus surgery, which meant that a variety of visualization methods were tested.…

High-Definition Imaging in Spinal Neuroendoscopy

2010

BACKGROUND Spinal endoscopy is still under controversial discussion. An often acclaimed critic is the poor endoscopic image quality in comparison with the microscope. Since high-definition digital cameras have recently been introduced into spinal neuroendoscopy, the aim of the current study is to examine whether superior image quality has a relevant impact on intraoperativen orientation. MATERIAL AND METHODS A lumbar endoscopic discectomy was recorded simultaneously in High-Definition resolution (HD) and Standard-Definition resolution (SD). 10 experienced spinal surgeons were asked to identify predefined as well as not predefined anatomic structures in HD and SD resolution. Additionally, th…

Choledochocele imaged with magnetic resonance cholangiography.

2000

Choledochal cysts are rare developmental malformations of the biliary tree. Percutaneous and endoscopic ultrasound, as well as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, are recommended diagnostic tools. Magnetic resonance cholangiography may also contribute to the workup and treatment plan of patients with choledochal cysts. We report a 25-yr-old white woman with episodic nausea and moderate epigastric dyscomfort. Magnetic resonance cholangiography showed a rather spherical, cyst-like, fluid-filled structure in continuity with the prepapillary segment of the common bile duct, thus making a choledochocele (type III choledochal cyst) likely. The patient was treated by endoscopic sphinct…
