Face Inpainting via Nested Generative Adversarial Networks

2019

Face inpainting aims to repaired damaged images caused by occlusion or cover. In recent years, deep learning based approaches have shown promising results for the challenging task of image inpainting. However, there are still limitation in reconstructing reasonable structures because of over-smoothed and/or blurred results. The distorted structures or blurred textures are inconsistent with surrounding areas and require further post-processing to blend the results. In this paper, we present a novel generative model-based approach, which consisted by nested two Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), the sub-confrontation GAN in generator and parent-confrontation GAN. The sub-confrontation GAN…

Korpusavusteinen diskurssintutkimus (CADS): analyysiesimerkki homouden ja heterouden digitaalisista diskursseista

2018

The article aims at combining two methodological approaches, namely corpus linguistics and discourse studies. Both of these approaches are present in corpus-assisted discourse studies (CADS) which makes use of both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. First, an attempt is made to discuss the differences and similarities of these two traditions based on Leech’s (2000) listing. However, it turns out that this listing does not include all necessary viewpoints, and those are further discussed. In the empirical section of the paper, the Suomi24 corpus is analysed in order to provide an example of CADS. The analysis was carried out through collocation and discourse prosody analyses. The re…

Two-Color Radiation Generated in a Seeded Free-Electron Laser with Two Electron Beams.

2015

We present the experimental evidence of the generation of coherent and statistically stable two-color free-electron laser radiation obtained by seeding an electron beam double peaked in energy with a laser pulse single spiked in frequency. The radiation presents two neat spectral lines, with time delay, frequency separation, and relative intensity that can be accurately controlled. The analysis of the emitted radiation shows a temporal coherence and a shot-to-shot regularity in frequency significantly enhanced with respect to the self-amplified spontaneous emission. © 2015 American Physical Society. © 2015 American Physical Society.

Are virtues national, supranational, or universal?

2014

Many studies investigated cultural differences in values, most notably by Hofstede and Schwarz. Relatively few have focused on virtues, a related and important concept in contemporary social science. The present paper examines the similarities and differences between nations, or blocks of - culturally related - nations on the perceived importance of virtues. Adults (N = 2.809 students) from 14 countries were asked to freely mention which virtues they found important to practice in daily life, and next to rate a list of 15 virtues, which reflect the most frequently mentioned categories in The Netherlands, as found in a previous study. The 14 nations included the United States, Mexico, nine E…

Genetic diversity and trait genomic prediction in a pea diversity panel

2014

Background Pea (Pisum sativum L.), a major pulse crop grown for its protein-rich seeds, is an important component of agroecological cropping systems in diverse regions of the world. New breeding challenges imposed by global climate change and new regulations urge pea breeders to undertake more efficient methods of selection and better take advantage of the large genetic diversity present in the Pisum sativum genepool. Diversity studies conducted so far in pea used Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) and Retrotransposon Based Insertion Polymorphism (RBIP) markers. Recently, SNP marker panels have been developed that will be useful for genetic diversity assessment and marker-assisted selection. Resu…

Effect of hairless gene polymorphism on the breeding values of milk production traits in Valle del Belice dairy sheep

2013

The aim of this work was to assess the association between the hairless genotypes and estimated breeding values (EBVs) for milk yield (MY), fat (FAT) and protein (PRT) content in Valle del Belice dairy sheep breed. A data set from 465 randomly chosen unrelated individuals was analyzed. EBV for MY, FAT and PRT contents were estimated by REML analysis of a single trait repeatability animal model. The genotype effect on EBV was assessed by ANOVA and by the Tukey–Kramer multiple comparison test. The PCR-SSCP test showed the presence of CC and CT genotypes in Valle del Belice individuals. Some differences in milk production traits between the genotypes were found. For MY, individuals with CT gen…

Assisted reproductive technology results: Why are live-birth percentages so low?

2014

The present bioessay aims to analyze the impact of parental age, cause of infertility, embryo chromosomal anomalies, assisted reproduction technology (ART) treatments, and environmental and occupational exposures to xenobiotics on ART results, particularly on live-birth percentages per transfer. Special attention is paid to analyzing the effects of these factors on the mitochondrial, genetic, and epigenetic traits of gametes and embryos to ascertain the molecular/cellular mechanisms responsible for the relatively low percentages of live births reported year after year in ART cycles. The bias of age distribution of women attending fertility clinics toward the late thirties and beyond and the…

A quick one-tube nested PCR-protocol for EPO transgene detection

2012

The practice of doping threatens fair competition in sports. With the very recent reports on successful gene therapies for several diseases, the likelihood for abuse of gene transfer techniques in elite sports is rapidly increasing. It is therefore very important to develop valid detection techniques for transgenic DNA (tDNA) with ultimate sensitivity and specificity. To date, three slightly different procedures have been reported to reliably detect tDNA with sufficiently high sensitivity. Two utilize a real-time PCR-based approach and one uses a primer-internal, intron-spanning PCR approach (spiPCR). The specificity and sensitivity of these techniques, however, is still a matter of debate.…

Sequence, molecular organization and products of the Drosophila virilis homologs of the D. melanogaster nested genes lethal(2)tumorous imaginal discs…

1997

Abstract In this study, we describe the isolation of the Drosophila virilis (Dvir) 6201-bp genomic fragment homologous to a 7047-bp genomic region of D. melanogaster (Dmel) that harbors the nested genes lethal(2)tumorous imaginal discs (l(2)tid), lethal(2)neighbour of tid (l(2)not) and lethal(2)relative of tid (l(2)rot). The isolated fragment, which maps at the cytogenetic position 50A5 on chromosome 5, carries the Dvir homologs of the Dmel genes l(2)tid and l(2)not. In both cases, the interspecific comparison of the determined sequences reveals a high homology regarding the protein coding regions and a high degree of evolutionary divergence concerning the intronic parts of the genes. In th…
