Spatial homogeneity from temporal stability: Exploiting the combined hyper-frequent revisit of Terra and Aqua to guide Earth System Science

2021

Abstract The terrestrial component of the Earth system has witnessed considerable changes in the past decades due to anthropogenic action. Throughout this period, the NASA Terra mission has been constantly monitoring the surface with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument. When combined with the MODIS instrument on-board of the Aqua platform, we obtain a hyper-frequent revisit capability providing sub-daily observations globally at a moderate resolution of ~250 m, but with a strong multi-angular variation of the observation footprint. Here we propose to exploit this particular configuration provided by the combined Terra + Aqua constellation to infer spatial ho…

Alpha-(13′-hydroxy)-6-hydroxychroman, the main product of alpha-tocopherol metabolism in human hepatocytes, regulates CYP4F2 and PPAR-γ expression

2017

The enzymatic metabolism of vitamin E in liver cells generates long chain metabolites (LCMs) with proposed regulatory activity on inflammatory and atherogenic genes. In this study the LCM formation kinetics was characterized in HepG2 and HepaRG human hepatic cells, supplemented with RRR-α-tocopherol (α-TOH). α-13’OH was the main product of α-TOH metabolism, while α-13’COOH metabolite and the short chain metabolite α-CEHC, were detected only in traces, thus demonstrating the poor efficiency of vitamin E catabolism in these cells. However, this metabolism was significantly simulated when the hepatic cells were challenged with (lipo)toxic agents, such as ethanol or palmitate. Under such condit…

Intravital fluorescence microscopy for the study of leukocyte interaction with platelets and endothelial cells

1999

Publisher Summary This chapter introduces the techniques of intravital microscopy as a tool to study the microcirculation in intact animals under conditions of oxidative stress. Intravital fluorescence microscopy can be performed with almost all types of epiillumination microscopes available. The introduction of fluorescent dyes and refined epiillumination techniques has significantly advanced the possibilities of intravital microscopic studies of the liver microcirculation, including quantitative analyses of both circulatory parameters and cellular mechanisms. Using appropriate dyes, intravital microscopy allows the study of (1) microvascular perfusion, (2) leukocyte-endothelial cell inter…

Sex-Specific Habitat Selection in an Edge Habitat Specialist, the Western Barbastelle Bat

2011

The niche variation hypothesis suggests that a population's ability to react to varying environmental conditions depend on the behavioural variability of its members. However, most studies on bats, including the work on the habitat use of the western barbastelle bat, Barbastella barbastellus, have not considered sex-specific and individual variability. We studied the habitat use of 12 female and five male western barbastelle bats within their home ranges with respect to available habitat types by applying kernel methods and Euclidean distances. Our results indicate individual habitat preferences within and among sexes of this species. Females preferred deciduous forest and linear elements w…

2012

The article analyzes The valencian widow (Lope de Vega) in the context of changing conceptions of spectacle at the end of XVIth century and the beginning of XVIIth. The author focus on the relationship between main features of new urban population and the emergency of mass culture dynamics. Theatre played a key role in that emergent mass culture, giving sense and including in coherent plots some preoccupations and fears of that urban population, such as social mobility, ambiguity of gender roles or subjective disorientation.
