Recurrence time distribution and temporal clustering properties of a cellular automaton modelling landslide events

2018

Abstract. Reasonable prediction of landslide occurrences in a given area requires the choice of an appropriate probability distribution of recurrence time intervals. Although landslides are widespread and frequent in many parts of the world, complete databases of landslide occurrences over large periods are missing and often such natural disasters are treated as processes uncorrelated in time and, therefore, Poisson distributed. In this paper, we examine the recurrence time statistics of landslide events simulated by a cellular automaton model that reproduces well the actual frequency-size statistics of landslide catalogues. The complex time series are analysed by varying both the threshold…

The acquisition of written competence through lexical chains: comparison between native and non-native speakers

2000

Este estudio analiza un corpus de composiciones escritas en inglés por aprendices españoles y nativos ingleses y estudio la adquisición de la competencia escrita a través del uso de las cadenas léxicas. This work analyzes a corpus of written essays by native and non-native learners of English and studies the acquisition of written competence in English through the use of lexical chains.

Syntactic Criterial Features in Assessing Written Performance in English and French

2014

Promocijas darba „Sintaktiskās kriteriālās pazīmes angļu un franču valodas rakstveida snieguma vērtēšanā” teorētiskajā daļā tiek analizētas dažādas pieejas valodas vienību apguves izpētē, kā arī aktualizēti galvenie principi rakstveida snieguma vērtēšanā un rezultātu pielīdzināšanā Eiropas kopīgajām pamatnostādnēm. Pamatojoties uz mūsdienu deskriptīvajās gramatikās lietoto angļu un franču valodas sintaktisko struktūru kontrastīvās analīzes rezultātiem, promocijas darba empīriskajā daļā tiek veikta angļu un franču valodas apguvēju lietoto sintakstisko struktūru kvantitatīvā un kvalitatīvā analīze. Iegūtie dati tiek izmantoti, lai izstrādātu katram valodas apguves līmenim (A1 – C2) atbilstoša…

Contesting language policy for asylum seekers in the Northern periphery: the story of Tailor F

2020

AbstractThis article is about navigating asylum, employment and language policy in a new country as an asylum seeker. Through the story of one individual, we show that profound inequalities are exacerbated when forced migrants are limited in their choice of language they might study or use. The individual is Tailor F, an Iraqi man seeking asylum, and the country is Finland, officially bilingual, with a majority language (Finnish) and a minority language (Swedish). Finland’s official bilingualism does not extend evenly to language education provided for asylum seekers, who are taught Finnish regardless of the region where they are placed. Upon arrival, Tailor F was housed in a reception cent…

Els verbs de percepció visual en català: classificació semàntica i distribució en gèneres escrits

2022

This work focuses on the study of the meanings conveyed by two visual perception verbs (mirar and veure) in Central Catalan within the theoretical framework of cognitive semantics. Our objective is twofold: (i) to analyze and describe them in order to establish metaphorical and metonymic semantic projections; and (ii) to determine the intralinguistic distribution of the non-prototypical meanings of these verbs. We have analyzed examples extracted from dictionaries (mostly DIEC2) and 1.750 forms picked out from the literary narrative and press texts of the Corpus textual informatitzat de la llengua catalana (CTILC). By analyzing these examples and the context in which they appear, we establi…

Catalan Sociolinguistics

2022

Humans learned to talk a thousand years ago, but our written abilities are more modern. Technological progress—from writing to digitalization—have crucially changed the way we communicate with each other. Yet, research about linguistic uses, which happens under the area of sociolinguistics, is only a modern phenomenon. In fact, the concept sociolinguistics was only coined in 1949. In the Catalan culture, the first sociolinguistic studies took the form of anti-Franco essays. It was only during the late 1960s that these essays took a sociological dimension thanks to Lluís-Vicent Aracil and Rafael-Lluís Ninyoles. Nowadays, in a context of increasing multidisciplinary approaches, Catalan sociol…

Languagised Repertoires : How Fictional Languages Have Real Effects

2019

It is now widely acknowledged in a range of linguistic disciplines that ‘languages’ are sociohistorical constructs rather than ontologically real entities. While this insight has contributed in important ways to challenging the monolingual bias in linguistics, a simplistic dismissal of the notion of ‘languages’ is unhelpful when trying to explain its status and function as a sociocultural, metalinguistic construct. This chapter draws on insights from linguistic anthropology as well as usage-based perspectives on language learning to argue that language use always involves an evaluative dimension linked with sociocultural conventions, and that it is such language use that forms the basis of …
