The Scales of Psychological Well-Being – a validation, usability and test–retest study among community-dwelling older people in Finland

2020

Objectives: To validate the Finnish version of the 42-item Scales of Psychological Well-Being among community-dwelling older people. The study also examined the test–retest reliability and usability, i.e. user experience, of the scales in this age group. Method: The 42-item version of the SPWB was administered as part of a face-to-face interview among 968 men and women aged 75, 80 or 85 years. The subsample for test–retest analyses comprised 42 participants, who in addition to 11 interviewers also answered questions concerning the usability of the scales. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, Pearson and intra-class correlation coefficients, and Kendal…

Do the Mega and Titan Tests Yield Accurate Results? An Investigation into Two Experimental Intelligence Tests

2020

The Mega and Titan Tests were designed by Ronald K. Hoeflin to make fine distinctions in the intellectual stratosphere. The Mega Test purported to measure above-average adult IQ up to and including scores with a rarity of one in a million of the general population. The Titan Test was billed as being even more difficult than the Mega Test. In this article, these claims are subjected to scrutiny. Both tests are renormed using the normal curve of distribution. It is found that the Mega Test has a higher ceiling and a lower floor than the Titan Test. While the Mega Test may thus seem preferable as a psychometric instrument, it is somewhat marred by a number of easy items in its verbal section. …

Reported prevalence of health conditions that affect drivers

2017

Drivers’ health and fitness are essential factors in order to predict performance outcomes and to promote road safety. It is a demonstrated fact that drivers with (physical and mental) health impairments or illnesses have more probabilities of being involved in traffic crashes and suffering (or causing) several injuries. The general objective of this study was to examine the prevalence of adverse health conditions that may affect Spanish drivers and its perceived impact on driving fitness. It was used a sample of 1,200 Spanish drivers (666 men and 534 women). The only selection criteria were to be in possession of any type of driving license for vehicles other than motorcycles and to drive …

Psykoterapeutin henkilökohtaisten ominaisuuksien merkitys psykoterapiassa ja niiden vaikutus tuloksellisuuteen identiteettihaastattelun perusteella

2018

The purpose of my study was to use the Psychotherapist Identity Interview (PII) method, developed for this study and based on Erik H. Erikson's and Heinz Kohut's theories, to examine the significance of the personal characteristics of psychotherapists for psychotherapy, and their effect on treatment results. The study described the theoretical background and development of the interview method and the validation of the instrument. The study involved 68 contract therapists from the Helsinki Psychotherapy Study and 333 patients, of whom 65 therapists and 308 patients were included in the as-sessment of benefit from therapy. Videotaped, semistructured therapist interviews were assessed using 1…

Logistyka publiczna jako wyraz smart governance

2018

Currently, all cities are seeking to be intelligent. One of the dimensions of the “intelligence” of the city is the smart governance, the realization of which means, among others, stakeholders participation in the implementation of public tasks. This participation is the essence of logistics in the public sector. Therefore, this article indicates that cooperation between the public and private sectors is one of the elements of smart solutions implementation. Logistics with its potential of contact coordination is an important source of optimization. Thus, the public logistics responds to the challenge of modern cities on meeting the growing social expectations regarding to the provision of …

Socially Responsible Logistics in of Public Services' Area

2018

In this article the issues of social responsibility and necessity of its implementation in public sector have been taken on. We’ve tried to answer the question: what criteria should be taken into account in bargaining procedures so public task could be completed concordantly with social responsibility rules and in what way logistic can support completing public tasks. It’s been said that main criteria consist of ecological and social aspects influencing for example improvement of quality of life, solving of social issues and abiding law by executors. Moreover we came to the conclusion that logistic area with its coordinating function is the most predestine for giving public services

First World War Diaries: Making the Private Public

2020

This article analyses several World War I Diaries written by soldiers on the Front. Starting with the circumstances of publication and their effects on the text, the article addresses the passage of these very private texts into public life, before turning to the role played by the diaries for the soldiers who write them. Studies of the diary as a genre are used to show how war diaries fit into the more general genre. Finally the article turns to the reception of these works, by studying what part literary distance may play for the soldiers keeping a diary, and by arguing that the task of making sense of these texts has been transferred to present-day readers.

'It's like a Sentence before the Sentence' - Exploring the Pains and Possibilities of Waiting for Imprisonment

2020

This article explores the implications of the ‘imprisonment queue’ in Norway. Based on interview data (N = 200), we show that while interviewees waiting to serve their sentences enjoy certain benefits such as being able to prepare for or negotiate the terms of their imprisonment, they also suffer from uncertainty and powerlessness. The suspension of their lives while they wait hinders them in pursuing their ground projects, things that really matter to them. This peculiar phenomenon has not received attention from prison scholars generally, as well as scholars writing on Nordic Exceptionalism specifically. This article addresses that gap and poses questions about the relative mildness of th…

Enhancing identification of causal effects by pruning

2018

Causal models communicate our assumptions about causes and effects in real-world phe- nomena. Often the interest lies in the identification of the effect of an action which means deriving an expression from the observed probability distribution for the interventional distribution resulting from the action. In many cases an identifiability algorithm may return a complicated expression that contains variables that are in fact unnecessary. In practice this can lead to additional computational burden and increased bias or inefficiency of estimates when dealing with measurement error or missing data. We present graphical criteria to detect variables which are redundant in identifying causal effe…
