Purpose To evaluate the 3-year safety, efficacy, predictability, and stability of iris-fixated toric phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation for the correction of myopia or hyperopia with astigmatism. Polyamine conjugates of stigmasterol.

Abstract Three new polyamine conjugates with stigmasterol [(3β,22 E )-stigmasta-5,22-dien-3-ol] were synthesized and subjected to basic antimicrobial and cytotoxic tests. The conjugate derived from spermine, (3β,22 E )-stigmasta-5,22-dien-3-yl 4(12-amino-4,9-diaza-dodecylamino)-4-oxobutanoate ( 5c ), displayed considerable antimicrobial activity on Staphylococcus aureus at low concentration (50 μg mL −1 ). The cytotoxic activity was tested on cells of human T-lymfoblastic leukemia (IC 50  = 35.8 ± 10.3 μM ( 5c ) and IC 50  = 35.9 ± 5.7 μM ( 5b )) and normal human fibroblasts (IC 50  = 38.0 ± 2.8 μM ( 5c ) and IC 50  = 45.5 ± 1.9 μM ( 5b )). Conjugate 5a displayed no activity in both tests.

New records of phytoseiid mites from Italy, with description of a new species and a redescription of other two (Parasitiformes, Phytoseiidae)

The Italian phytoseiid fauna consists of 91 valid species. Eighteen of them were described as new species from materials collected in various Italian localities. In the present paper we report nine new records from the Italian fauna and describe the new species, Neoseiulus mediterraneus belonging to the subfamily Amblyseiinae. Complementary descriptions of two rare species, namely: Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) singularis and Typhlodromus (Typhlodromus) knisleyi, were also added.

Influence of different types of astigmatism on visual acuity

[EN] Purpose To investigate the change in visual acuity (VA) produced by different types of astigmatism (on the basis of the refractive power and position of the principal meridians) on normal accommodating eyes. Methods The lens induced method was employed to simulate a set of 28 astigmatic blur conditions on different healthy emmetropic eyes. Additionally, 24 values of spherical defocus were also simulated on the same eyes for comparison. Influence of brood temperature and hygrometry variations on the development of the honey bee ectoparasite Varroa jacobsoni (Mesostigmata : Varroidae)

The influence of different temperatures (from 26 to 39.5°C) and relative humidities (40 and 70%) on the development of Varma jacobsoni (Oudemans) was studied by placing newly capped and parasitized worker bee broods into thermostatically controlled chambers. In one set of experiments the temperature was kept constant, and in the second set, the parasitized worker broods were placed at a temperature of 40,41, or 42°C for a time varying from 0 to 24 h and then returned to 32.5°C. The optimal temperature for development of the mites was between 32.5 and 33.4°C, which corresponds to the brood temperature of Apis mellifera L. A cross-cultural examination of fat women’s experiences: Stigma and gender in North American and Finnish culture

In this manuscript, the voices of women of size in North America and Finland indicate that there is a shared experience of being fat. Based on cross-cultural analysis of our respective empirical findings, we argue that there is a shared Western fat lived experience that perpetuates a stigmatized gendered landscape of living with a fat body. The emergent themes tended to revolve around two similar contradictions—the phenomenon of hyper(in)visibility and a belief their fatness is a temporary or liminal state—both of which lead to an internalization of fat hatred. We argue that these findings stem from the tremendous stigma and mistreatment that both samples of women face in their daily lives.…

Two new sesquiterpene derivatives from the Tunisian endemic Ferula tunetana Pom.

A new sesquiterpene ester, tunetanin A (1), a new sesquiterpene coumarin, tunetacoumarin A (2), together with eight known compounds, i.e., coladin (3), coladonin (4), isosmarcandin (5), 13-hydroxyfeselol (6), umbelliprenin (7) propiophenone (8), beta-sitosterol (9), and stigmasterol (10), were isolated from the roots of Ferula tunetana. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic methods, including 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments and MS analysis, as well as by comparison with published data. The cytotoxicity of compounds 1-7 towards two human colon cancer cell lines, HT-29 and HCT 116, was evaluated. Compounds 3, 4, and 6 showed weak cytotoxic activities.

Foldable toric intraocular lens for astigmatism correction in cataract patients.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of AcrySof toric intraocular lens (IOL) (Alcon) implantation to correct preexisting astigmatism in patients having cataract surgery. SETTING: Ophthalmology Service, Donostia Hospital, San Sebastian, Spain.
