Nitric oxide modulates cerebral blood flow stimulation by acetazolamide in the rat cortex: a laser Doppler scanning study

Abstract The involvement of nitric oxide (NO) in cerebral blood flow (CBF) stimulation by acetazolamide was studied in anaesthetised, mechanically ventilated Wistar rats. CBF was monitored by laser Doppler scanning. Acetazolamide induced a long-lasting significant rCBF-increase. Application of N G -Nitro- l -arginine (L-NNA), an inhibitor of all NO synthetases (NOS), prevented CBF stimulation by acetazolamide. Continuous infusion of the exogenous NO donor SIN-1 (3-morpholinosydnonimine) suppressed L-NNA induced increases of mean arterial blood pressure without effect on rCBF in comparison to baseline. Abstract Brain responses related to auditory processing show large changes throughout infancy and childhood with some evidence that the two hemispheres might mature at different rates. Auditory event-related potentials measured in kindergarten predict later reading problems at school age.

Identifying children at risk for reading problems or dyslexia at kindergarten age could improve support for beginning readers. Brain event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured for temporally complex pseudowords and corresponding non-speech stimuli from 6.5-year-old children who participated in behavioral literacy tests again at 9 years in the second grade. Children who had reading problems at school age had larger N250 responses to speech and non-speech stimuli particularly at the left hemisphere. Got rhythm… for better and for worse. Cross-modal effects of auditory rhythm on visual word recognition

The present research aimed to investigate whether, as previously observed with pictures, background auditory rhythm would also influence visual word recognition. In a lexical decision task, participants were presented with bisyllabic visual words, segmented into two successive groups of letters, while an irrelevant strongly metric auditory sequence was played in a loop. Evidence of beat perception via purely tactile stimulation

Humans can easily tap in synchrony with an auditory beat but not with an equivalent visual rhythmic sequence, suggesting that the sensation of meter (i.e. of an underlying regular pulse) may be inherently auditory. We assessed whether the perception of meter could also be felt with tactile sensory inputs. We found that, when participants were presented with identical rhythmic sequences filled with either short tones or hand stimulations, they could more efficiently tap in synchrony with strongly rather than weakly metric sequences. The role of musical aptitude and language skills in preattentive duration processing in school-aged children

We examined 10-12-year old elementary school children's ability to preattentively process sound durations in music and speech stimuli. In total, 40 children had either advanced foreign language production skills and higher musical aptitude or less advanced results in both musicality and linguistic tests. Event-related potential (ERP) recordings of the mismatch negativity (MMN) show that the duration changes in musical sounds are more prominently and accurately processed than changes in speech sounds. Cortical processing of musical sounds in children with Cochlear Implants

Abstract Objective We studied the neurocognitive mechanisms of musical instrument sound perception in children with Cochlear Implants (CIs) and in children with normal hearing (NH). Methods ERPs were recorded in a new multi-feature change-detection paradigm. Three magnitudes of change in fundamental frequency, musical instrument, duration, intensity increments and decrements, and presence of a temporal gap were presented amongst repeating 295 Hz piano tones.
