Time-resolved classification of dog brain signals reveals early processing of faces, species and emotion

Dogs process faces and emotional expressions much like humans, but the time windows important for face processing in dogs are largely unknown. By combining our non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) protocol on dogs with machine-learning algorithms, we show category-specific dog brain responses to pictures of human and dog facial expressions, objects, and phase-scrambled faces. We trained a support vector machine classifier with spatiotemporal EEG data to discriminate between responses to pairs of images. Abstract Patterns of two Ts, materializing different symmetry groups, were used to explore conditions that would lead to a modulation of the typically observed overestimation of the length of a T's undivided line relative to its divided line. Observers either had to compare the lengths of the lines of one or the other of the Ts in a pattern, or noncorresponding lines between the two Ts. For both tasks alike, the T-illusion was found to be markedly greater with twofold mirror-symmetric 2-T patterns than it usually is with individual Ts. Participants were presented with a tiny disk embedded in an empty circle (Experiment 1 and 3) or in a square (Experiment 2). Shortly afterwards the disk vanished and they had to reproduce the previously seen disk position within the empty shape by means of the mouse cursor, as accurately as possible. Mechanisms of Ca2+ liberation at fertilization

The mechanisms underlying the Ca2+ release at fertilization of several animal organisms are reported. Four main classical theories are described, i.e., that of Ca2+ release following simple sperm contact and a G protein stimulation; that of simple sperm contact followed by a tyrosine kinase receptor activation; that of the necessity of introduction by sperm into the egg of molecules for Ca2+ release; and that the molecule introduced into the marine eggs for Ca2+ release is the same Ca2+. Two other mechanisms for Ca2+ release are also illustrated: that of ryanodine receptor stimulation and that of NAADP formation.

Single-flash electroretinograms were obtained from 7- and 14-month-old apoB100,LDLR–/– and control mice fed a standard diet under both scotopic and photopic conditions.
