Opioid-Sensitive Peripheral Neuronal Activity in the Modulation of Gastric Mucosal Injury

1991

There is growing evidence that capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurones participate in the protective mechanisms of the gastric mucosa against damage. Animals pretreated systemically with capsaicin, at doses that lead to the ablation of capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons, show an increase in the level of macro-scopically apparent mucosal damage in different experimental models of ulceration (Szolcsanyi and Bartho, 1981; Holzer and Sametz, 1986). Furthermore, acute stimulation with capsaicin of afferent nerve endings located in the gastric mucosa protects against different ulcerogenic mechanisms (Szolcsanyi and Bartho, 1981; Holzer and Lippe, 1988; Holzer et al., 1989).

Diagnostic Localizing Value of the Electrically Elicited Blink Reflex

1993

The blink reflex (BlinkR) following electrical stimulation of the supraorbital nerve consists of an early ipsilateral reflex component (R1) and bilateral late reflex components ipsilaterally (R2) and contralateral (R2c). An additional, and even later component, also bilateral, R3, R3c was first described by Penders and Delwaide [34] and so far has not been studied systematically.

Sacral neurostimulation and neuromodulation in urological practice

2000

The problems associated with treating various forms of lower tract dysfunction by electrical stimulation are reflected in the many years of basic and clinical research in this area. However, better understanding of both neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, and development of new technologies have led to further application of electrical current to restore impaired bladder function. Contemporary knowledge of the potential for both sacral neurostimulation and neuromodulation as a therapeutic option for lower urinary tract dysfunction is reviewed.

Spinal Cord Stimulation to Treat Unresponsive Cancer Pain: A Possible Solution in Palliative Oncological Therapy

2022

(1) Background: Treatment of cancer-related pain is still challenging, and it can be managed by both medical and interventional therapies. Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) is a minimally invasive technique, and its use is rapidly increasing in the treatment of chronic pain. (2) Materials and Methods: Our study aims to perform a review of the pertinent literature about current evidences in cancer pain treatment by Spinal Cord Stimulation. Moreover, we created a database based on case reports or case series (18 studies) in the literature. We analyzed a clinical group of oncological patients affected by intractable pain undergoing SCS implantation, focusing on outcome. (3) Results: The analysis o…

Temperament traits and preferences of music works with specific musical elements

2017

Characterizing physicochemical, nutritional and quality attributes of wholegrain Oryza sativa L. subjected to high intensity ultrasound-stimulated pr…

2020

Abstract When ultrasonic stimulation is applied to plant seeds it may promote the development of new adaptive characteristics during germination, thus providing an alternative to regulate nutritional and physicochemical attributes of germinated seeds. However, there is rather limited information concerning high-intensity ultrasound (HIU) effects on the germination process of crop seeds as foodstuff. This investigation aimed at examining the effects of a novel processing pattern, which coupled HIU stimulation (28 kHz, 17.83 W cm−2) to a pre-germination stage, on the physicochemical, nutritional and quality changes of wholegrain brown rice (WBR; Oryza sativa L.). Results suggested that HIU st…

The Receptor Functions of Endogenous C1q, a Subcomponent of the First Component of Complement, on Peritoneal Macrophages

1982

Abstract C1q, the Fc recognizing subcomponent of the first complement component was shown to be synthesized by peritoneal macrophages. Evidence is presented that C1q serves during the secretion phase as Fc binding protein on the membrane of these macrophages. A dose-dependent inhibition of Fc rosette formation occured when the macrophages were pretreated with anti-C1q -F(ab') 2 . The C3b rosette formation was not affected. In addition, preincubation of peritoneal macrophages with anti-C1q -F(ab') 2 abolished specifically the polyanion mediated stimulation to secrete dose and time dependently lysosomal enzymes. There was no polyanion-induced enzyme release after incubation of polyanions with…

Expression of Nitric Oxide Synthase I Determines the Strength of Adrenergic Cyclic GMP Response in the Rat Pineal Gland

1997

In the rat pineal gland the adrenergic cGMP response is not static but changes during postnatal development and depends on environmental lighting conditions. Since the adrenergic cGMP transduction is mediated by stimulation of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase I (NOS I), we investigated whether changes in the strength of adrenergic cGMP response coincide with the expression of NOS I. Using immunoblot analysis, we found that the increase in adrenergic cGMP transduction in the second postnatal week coincides with enhanced NOS I expression. Similarly, we observed that changes in the intensity of adrenergic cGMP transduction under different environmental lighting conditions correspond to NOS I e…
