Mildronate (3-(2,2,2-trimethylhydrazinium) propionate) is an inhibitor of l-carnitine biosynthesis and an anti-ischemic drug. In the present study, we investigated the effects of mildronate in rats following focal cerebral ischemia. Male Wistar rats were subjected to transient occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAO) for 90min, followed by the intraperitoneal administration of mildronate at doses of 100 and 200mg/kg 2h after reperfusion and then daily for an additional 14days. The beam-walking, rota-rod and cylinder tests were used to assess sensorimotor function, and vibrissae-evoked forelimb-placing and limb-placing tests examined responses to tactile and proprioceptive stimulation.…

The differential effects of visual hemifield motion stimulation during fixation of a stationary target were compared under two conditions: fixation straight ahead without any further instructions and fixation straight ahead with attention shifted to the "dark hemifield." Data from nine right-handed volunteers revealed that striate and extrastriate right hemispheric visual areas exhibited larger activations during left hemifield motion stimulation when attention was shifted to the right dark hemifield. AbstractChemical stimulation of the dopaminergic nigro-striatal system induces circling behaviour also in animals in which an extensive telencephalic lesion has been performed. In order to avoid the effects linked to chemical stimulation, we have studied the circling behaviour means of electrical stimulation of the caudate nucleus in chronic cats with cortical lesions. The role of the motor cortex on the circling behaviour is emphasized.

AbstractElectrically induced afterdischarge (ADs) were evoked in the cats' dorsal hippocampus. The action of the conditioning prestimulation of the pallidus nucleus on AD duration was studied. A significant facilitatory influence was observed when pallidal conditioning stimulation immediately preceded hippocampal test stimulation. The time course of the phenomenon showed a decrease of the conditioning action when the interval between the two stimulations increased: complete disappearance of the effect occurred after about 800 ms. Results are discussed as far as functional relationships between basal ganglia and rhinencephalic system are concerned.

Blue light is a UV-free irradiation suitable for treating chronic skin inflammation, for example, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and hand- and foot eczema. However, a better understanding of the mode of action is still missing. For this reason, we investigated whether dendritic cells (DC) are directly affected by blue light irradiation in vitro. The effects of dibutyryl cyclic AMP (DB-AMP; 10−3M) and adrenaline (2.2×10−6 M) on contractile force, 45Ca uptake, and total myocardial Ca concentration were investigated in electrically driven left auricles isolated from rat hearts. The experiments were performed at an extracellular Ca concentration of 0.45 mM and at low frequency of stimulation (15 beats/min). 45Ca exposure was 5 min. Under the conditions used, both drugs increased contractile force and enhanced 45Ca uptake (expressed as relative specific activity) by about 30% (DB-AMP) and 40% (adrenaline), respectively.
