AB0996 Rheumathologic Diseases in Adolescence: Psychological Profile of a Difficult Age

2015

Background Chronic disease significantly interfere with the quality of life at every age, expecially in a period of life characterized by the need to assume a role in the society and the research of a specific identity. The personal image is often destroyed by the disease, the long term sequelae of pharmacological treatment. Adolescents are frequently obligated to quit many possibilities of experience with peers. Objectives We realized a plurispecialistic approach to adolescents with rheumatologic diseases, with the figures of neuropsychiatric, psychologists, rheumatologists, endocrinologists, to give an answer to the complex requests of these patients. Methods We evaluated 20 patients with…

Hiatal herniation of the stomach and pancreas in a patient with oxygen desaturations

2013

Hiatal hernia (HH), a neglected cause of cardiorespiratory symptoms, is a frequent entity characterized by the displacement of the gastro- esophageal junction and part of the stomach into the mediastinum. Although often asymptomatic, HH may also exert a wide spectrum of clinical presentations due to cardio-pulmonary compression, including acute cardiovascular events such as arrhythmias, post-prandial syncope, angina-like chest pain, recurrent acute heart failure, hemodynamic collapse, electrocardiographic changes (T-wave inversion, ST elevation) simulating myocardial ischemia or pericarditis, and respiratory manifestations that can range from exercise intolerance and dyspnea on exertion to …

Physical exercise and sarcopenia in older people: position paper of the Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Medicine (OrtoMed)

2015

Sarcopenia is the age-associated loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. It is a major clinical problem for older people and research in understanding of pathogenesis, clinical consequences, management, and socioeconomic burden of this condition is growing exponentially. The causes of sarcopenia are multifactorial, including inflammation, insulin resistance, changing endocrine function, chronic diseases, nutritional deficiencies and low levels of physical activity. Operational definition of sarcopenia combines assessment of muscle mass, muscle strength and physical performance. The diagnosis of sarcopenia should be based on having a low appendicular fat free mass in combination with low …

Nutrition in Pediatric Kidney Disease

2018

AbstractNutrition has a major impact on the health of children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Special diets and additional replacement therapies may be chosen according to the specific renal disease. Persistent low-grade inflammation, which contributes to CKD-associated cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, protein-energy wasting, oxidative stress, acidosis, chronic and recurrent infections, and altered metabolism of adipose tissue may result from dietary deficits and are important targets for nutritive intervention. Therefore, many guidelines have been developed regarding nutrient intake adequation to assist pediatricians treating these children. Acute kidney injury (AKI) has multifa…

Heart Rate Variability in Children and Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy—A Systematic Literature Review

2020

Cardiac autonomic dysfunction has been reported in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). The aim of this study was to assess the existing literature on heart rate variability (HRV) in pediatric patients with CP and a special attention was paid to the compliance of the studies with the current HRV assessment and interpretation guidelines. A systematic review was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) databases searched for English language publications from 1996 to 2019 using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms “heart rate variability” and “cerebral palsy” in conjunction with additional inclusion criteria: studies limited to …

Influence of various preseason training in elite youth soccer players

2013

Aim Endurance capacity of each individual soccer player can notably influence a team’s success. The opinion about the necessity of generic endurance specific training in soccer, especially in adolescent athletes, still varies widely.

Safety and efficacy of exercise testing with atropine in patients with recent uncomplicated ST elevation acute myocardial infarction

2012

Background: Exercise testing (ET) remains the most accessible and widely used technique for the detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) and for the assessment of its severity. Failure to reach 85% of maximal predicted heart rate (MPHR) during exercise may render an ET nondiagnostic for ischemia detection in patients with recent uncomplicated ST elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI). We sought to investigate the injection of atropine in patients who fail to achieve 85% of age-predicted heart rate during ET, defining its safety and efficacy to raise heart rate to adequate levels as well as to determine its effect on ET interpretation. Methods: Between January 2005 and December 2008…

Unilateral Conditioning Contractions Enhance Power Output in Elite Short Track Speed Skaters

2018

AbstractThe objective of the present study was to assess the effect of unilateral lower-body-conditioning muscle contractions during multiple sets of fatiguing repeated jumps in elite athletes. Five elite short-track speed-skating athletes performed 9 sets of 6 maximal consecutive jumps on 2 separate occasions: with (COND) and without (CTRL) preliminary voluntary conditioning contractions (CC) 5 min before the beginning of the sets. The CC consisted of 2 consecutive 3 s maximal unilateral isometric squats against a fixed bar, resulting in a 6 s overall isometric contraction per leg. For each set, power output (PO) was measured using a linear position transducer and averaged over the 6 corre…
