Effect of temperature on anaerobic treatment of black water in UASB-septic tank systems
2007
The effect of northern European seasonal temperature changes and low temperature on the performance of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB)-septic tanks treating black water was studied. Three UASB-septic tanks were monitored with different operational parameters and at different temperatures. The results indicated the feasibility of the UASB-septic tank for (pre)treatment of black water at low temperatures with respect to removal of suspended solids and dissolved organic material. Inoculum sludge had little effect on COD(ss) removal, though in the start-up phase some poorly adapted inoculum disintegrated and washed out, thus requiring consideration when designing the process. Removal of …
Lagrangian matches between observations from aircraft, lidar and radar in a warm conveyor belt crossing orography
2021
Warm conveyor belts (WCBs) are important airstreams in extratropical cyclones, often leading to the formation of intense precipitation and the amplification of upper-level ridges. This study presents a case study that involves aircraft, lidar and radar observations in a WCB ascending from western Europe towards the Baltic Sea during the Hydrological Cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment (HyMeX) and T-NAWDEX-Falcon in October 2012, a preparatory campaign for the THORPEX North Atlantic Waveguide and Downstream Impact Experiment (TNAWDEX). Trajectories were used to link different observations along the WCB, that is, to establish so-called Lagrangian matches between observations. To this aim, a…
IEEE Access Special Section Editorial: Exploiting the Benefits of Interference in Wireless Networks: Energy Harvesting and Security
2018
Interference used to be viewed as a harmful factor in wireless networks, which can reduce the quality of information transmission. To combat against interference, many interference management techniques have emerged. Due to the latest research advances, interference (or noise) can also be exploited to offer some benefits to wireless networks. The first aspect is that interference in multi-user networks can be collected as a green power supply for the transceivers, known as wireless energy harvesting. Another application is that one can generate artificial noise to disrupt the adversarial eavesdropping, and guarantee the security of wireless networks. Therefore, conventional interference man…
Phosphorus limitation enhances parasite impact: feedback effects at the population level
2014
Background Nutrient deficiency affects the growth and population dynamics of consumers. Endoparasites can be seen as consumers that drain carbon (C) or energy from their host while simultaneously competing for limiting resources such as phosphorus (P). Depending on the relative demands of the host and the parasite for the limiting nutrient, intensified resource competition under nutrient limitation can either reduce the parasite’s effect on the host or further reduce the fitness of the nutrient-limited host. So far, knowledge of how nutrient limitation affects parasite performance at the host population level and how this affects the host populations is limited. Results We followed the popu…
Faktoru modeļu priekšrocības ekonomiskās aktivitātes īstermiņa prognozēšanā
2014
2016
Przedmiotem artykułu jest dziedzictwo kulinarne w kontekście wybranych elementów kultury religijnej. Omówiono przykłady promocji konkretnych potraw, wzorów żywieniowych nawiązujących do postaci określonych świętych (św.
