Intermittent Fasting and the Possible Benefits in Obesity, Diabetes, and Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review of Randomized Clinical Trials
2021
Intermittent fasting has become popular in recent years and is controversially presented as a possible therapeutic adjunct. A bibliographic review of the literature on intermittent fasting and obesity, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis was carried out. The scientific quality of the methodology and the results obtained were evaluated in pairs. Intermittent fasting has beneficial effects on the lipid profile, and it is associated with weight loss and a modification of the distribution of abdominal fat in people with obesity and type 2 diabetes as well as an improvement in the control of glycemic levels. In patients with multiple sclerosis, the data available are too scarce to draw any firm con…
A Dynamic Life-cycle Model for the Provisioning of Software Testing Services: Experiences from A Case Study in the Chinese ICT Sourcing Market
2011
ICT-enabled international sourcing of software-intensive systems and services (eSourcing) is a powerful strategy for managing businesses more effectively. China is becoming a superpower for eSourcing service provisioning, but most Chinese providers are small or medium-sized and leverage the mediated eSourcing model, delivering services to foreign ICT clients that interface with end-clients onshore. This model restricts the providers to low-value projects. This paper probes eSourcing of software testing services within the Chinese market. Testing is studied for two reasons. First, testing is one of the best ICT services, small- and medium-sized providers can provide to develop domain and tec…
An Experiment with Facebook as an Advertising Channel for Books and Audiobooks
2016
The paper addresses the problem of using social media to promote innovative products available in online stores. Motivated by the fast development of the audiobook market, on the one hand, and the efficiency of social media marketing, on the other hand, we conducted an experiment with a marketing campaign of books and audiobooks on the most popular social networking site, Facebook, and discussed it in the paper. The goal of the experiment was exploring possible differences in FB users’ reaction to FB advertisements of traditional books and audiobooks. The experiment was implemented by using a real Facebook fanpage of a Polish publishing house having its own online bookstore. Results show so…
Hypervisor-Based White Listing of Executables
2019
We describe an efficient system for ensuring code integrity of an operating system (OS), both its own code and application code. The proposed system can protect from an attacker who has full control over the OS kernel. An evaluation of the system's performance suggests the induced overhead is negligible. peerReviewed

Misfit evaluation of dental implant-supported metal frameworks manufactured with different techniques: Photoelastic and strain gauge measurements
2016
This study aims to compare in-vitro the fitting accuracy of implant-supported metal frameworks used for full-arch orthodontic restoration. The hypotheses tested were as follows: (1) for a fixed implant morphology, strains developed within the framework depend on how the framework had been fabricated and (2) stresses transferred to the implant–bone interface are related to the amount of framework misfit. Metal frameworks were fabricated using four different manufacturing techniques: conventional lost-wax casting, resin cement luting, electrospark erosion, and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing milling. Each framework was instrumented with three strain gauges to measure strai…
Suite of Statistical Models Forecasting Latvian GDP
2014
Abstract We develop a suite of statistical models to forecast Latvian GDP. We employ various univariate and multivariate econometric techniques to obtain short-term GDP projections and to assess the performance of the models. We also comprise the information contained in components of GDP and obtain short-term GDP projections from disaggregated perspective. We run out-of-sample forecasting procedures to evaluate GDP projections and to assess forecasting accuracy of all individual statistical models. We conclude that factor and bridge models are among the best individually performing models in the suite. Forecasting accuracy obtained using disaggregated models of factor and bridge models is …
Cell-cycle control in cell-biomaterial interactions
2000
Current biocompatibility testing involves the demonstration of cell proliferation, which is usually interpreted as a sign of positive biocompatibility when the materials sustain cell proliferation. As the field of biomaterials research is rapidly moving toward tissue-engineered devices and hybrid organs, control of cell function has become a main topic. Cell function, which involves specific differentiation pathways, cannot be separated from cell-cycle control. The study of cell-cycle control is an important extension of routine proliferation assays and has extensive roots in developmental and tumor biology. We studied the expression of the tumour suppressor gene p53 and the proliferation-a…
Reed Warbler Hosts Do Not Fine-Tune Mobbing Defenses During the Breeding Season, Even When Cuckoos Are Rare
2021
Hosts of brood parasitic cuckoos often employ mobbing attacks to defend their nests and, when mobbing is costly, hosts are predicted to adjust their mobbing to match parasitism risk. While evidence exists for fine-tuned plasticity, it remains unclear why mobbing does not track larger seasonal changes in parasitism risk. Here we test a possible explanation from parental investment theory: parents should defend their current brood more intensively as the opportunity to replace it declines (re-nesting potential), and therefore “counteract” any apparent seasonal decline to match parasitism risk. We take advantage of mobbing experiments conducted at two sites where reed warblers (Acrocephalus sc…
Pašregulējoša aizsardzība pret sistēmas pārslodzi
2018
