Ligands and receptors: common theme in insect storage protein transport.

1999

The passage of macromolecules through biological membranes is an essential process for all multicellular organisms. Insects have developed a mechanism different from that known for all other eukaryotes investigated so far. This review discusses the function and evolution of this mechanism. Insect pupae do not feed during metamorphosis. Therefore they depend on material that has been accumulated during the larval life. At the end of this period, shortly before pupariation, a rise in titer of ecdysteroid hormones induces the incorporation of a large fraction of storage proteins (hexamerins) from the body fluid into the fat body cells. The transport of hexamerins across the cell-membrane is me…

A Finite Difference Model of a PV-PCM System

2012

Abstract The performances of a photovoltaic panel (PV) are defined according to the “peak power” that identifies the maximum electric power supplied by the panel when it receives an insolation of 1 kW/m2 and the temperature of the cell is maintained at 25 °C. These conditions are only nominal since the solar radiation has a variable intensity and also the panel is subjected to thermal excursions; due to these reasons the real power efficiency of the panel is considerably lower than that obtainable in the nominal conditions. The study focused on assessing a method to reduce the peak temperatures of PV systems using Phase Change Materials (PCM). To this aim it was created a numerical model ca…

Precision luminosity measurements at LHCb

2014

Measuring cross-sections at the LHC requires the luminosity to be determined accurately at each centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$. In this paper results are reported from the luminosity calibrations carried out at the LHC interaction point 8 with the LHCb detector for $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76, 7 and 8 TeV (proton-proton collisions) and for $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5 TeV (proton-lead collisions). Both the "van der Meer scan" and "beam-gas imaging" luminosity calibration methods were employed. It is observed that the beam density profile cannot always be described by a function that is factorizable in the two transverse coordinates. The introduction of a two-dimensional description of the beams improves sig…

BUCC Shared Task: Cross-Language Document Similarity

2015

We summarise the organisation and results of the first shared task aimed at detecting the most similar texts in a large multilingual collection. The dataset of the shared was based on Wikipedia dumps with interlanguage links with further filtering to ensure comparability of the paired articles. The eleven system runs we received have been evaluated using the TREC evaluation metrics. 1 Task description Parallel corpora of original texts with their translations provide the basis for multilingual NLP applications since the beginning of the 1990s. Relative scarcity of such resources led to greater attention to comparable (=less parallel) resources to mine information about possible translations…

Development of a modular room-temperature hydride storage system for vehicular applications

2016

The subject of this paper concerns the development of a vehicular hydrogen tank system, using a commercial interstitial metal hydride as storage material. The design of the tank was intended to feed a fuel cell in a light prototype vehicle, and the chosen hydride material, Hydralloy C5 by GfE, was expected to be able to absorb and desorb hydrogen in a range of pressure suitable for this purpose. A systematic analysis of the material in laboratory scale allows an extrapolation of the thermodynamic and reaction kinetics data. The following development of the modular tank was done according to the requirements of the prototype vehicle propulsion system and led to promising intermediate results…

Partial Laser Cooling and Saturation Spectroscopy on 9 MeV 7Li+ - Ions in a Storage Ring

1989

Publisher Summary Laser cooling and spectroscopy in traps have reached impressive perfections. This chapter discusses laser cooling and partially Doppler-suppressed spectroscopy on stored ions at 5.4% speed of light in the test storage ring (TSR) heavy ion storage ring in Heidelberg. It discusses the requirements for saturation spectroscpy with two counterpropagating collinear laser beams. In contrast to Penning and RF-traps, the ions in a storage ring move at a high longitudinal velocity with small transverse harmonic oscillations around the central orbit with just a few times the orbiting frequency in the case of strong focussing. However, the injection of the high velocity beam introduce…

Improving Karhunen-Loeve based transform coding by using square isometries

2002

We propose, for an image compression system based on the Karhunen-Loeve transform implemented by neural networks, to take into consideration the 8 square isometries of an image block. The proper isometry applied puts the 8*8 square image block in a standard position, before applying the image block as input to the neural network architecture. The standard position is defined based on the variance of its four 4*4 sub-blocks (quadro partitioned) and brings the sub-block having the greatest variance in a specific corner and in another specific adjoining corner the sub-block having the second variance (if this is not possible the third is considered). The use of this "preprocessing" phase was e…

Proteoglycan occurrence in gastrolith of the crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus (Malacostraca: Decapoda).

2012

14 pages; International audience; Biomineralized structures are hybrid composites formed and stabilized by the close interaction of the organic and the inorganic phases. Crayfish are good models for studying biomineralization because they develop, in a molting-mineralization cycle, semi-spherical mineralized structures referred to as gastroliths. The organic matrix of these structures consists of proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids. Chitin is the main polysaccharide and is concentrically arranged as fibrous chitin-protein lamellar structures. Although several proteins and low-molecular weight phosphorylated components have been reported to be involved in gastrolith mineralization, the occ…
