Modification of Diurnal Cortisol Secretion in Women’s Professional Basketball. A Pilot Study

2021

Elite basketball training causes high levels of physiological stress, which can lead to negative physiological disorders in female athletes. The aim of this study was to establish the impact of physical activity on the rhythm of salivary cortisol secretion in elite female basketball players over one week. The population sample included 9 women professional basketball players. The control group was made up of 9 women who did not do any exercise. Saliva samples were collected from all participants at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on training days. Samples from the basketball group showed a significantly higher cortisol secretion. Moreover, from the second night, the pattern of cortisol secretion o…

Stress as a Key Concept in Chronic Widespread Pain and Fatigue Disorders

2009

ABSTRACT.Objectives: To review recent studies on the etiopathogenetic role and clinical relevance of life stress in medically unexplained syndromes characterized by chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue.Findings: Both fibromyalgia syndrome [FMS] and chronic fatigue syndrome [CFS] have been found to be frequently linked to different stressors, such as negative life events, occupational problems, posttraumatic stress [PTSD], adverse childhood experiences, and “overactive” lifestyle. In addition, the stress-modulating role of affect-regulation, perceptual-cognitive factors, and social support, as well as the relationship with depression have been investigated in FMS/CFS patients.…

FERULIC ACID INHIBITS OXIDATE STRESS AND CELL DEATH INDUCED BY Ab OLIGOMERS: IMPROVED DELIVERY BY SOLID LIPID NANOPARTICLES.

2009

Oxidative stress and dysfunctional mitochondria are among the earliest events in AD, triggering neurodegeneration. The use of natural antioxidants could be a neuroprotective strategy for blocking cell death. Here, the antioxidant action of ferulic acid (FA) on different paths leading to degeneration of recombinant beta-amyloid peptide (rAbeta42) treated cells was investigated. Further, to improve its delivery, a novel drug delivery system (DDS) was used. Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs), empty or containing ferulic acid (FA-SNL), were developed as DDS. The resulting particles had small colloidal size and highly negative surface charge in water. Using neuroblastoma cells and rAbeta42 oligome…

The interface of identity distress and psychological problems in students' adjustment to University.

2020

Identity distress, psychological symptoms, and adjustment to university (academic, social, and person-emotional) were examined among students in Spain (N = 241; Mage  = 19.0 (1.6), Md = 19; 84% female) and Canada (N = 531; Mage  = 19.8 (2.2), Md = 19; 82% female). The expected positive relationships were found between these variables. Similarly, increased identity distress of Spanish students and greater maladjustment at university for those in Canada were associated with contextual differences in the respective environments. Psychological problems mediated the linkages between identity distress with academic, social, and person-emotional functioning at university, respectively. Also, psych…

Fatigue Crack Growth for Different Ratios of Bending to Torsion in AlCu4Mg1

2008

The paper contains the fatigue crack growth test results obtained under proportional bending with torsion in AlCu4Mg1 aluminium alloy [1]. Specimens with rectangular cross sections and dimensions: length l = 90 mm, height w = 10 mm and thickness g = 8 mm were tested [2]. Each specimen had an external unilateral notch with depth 2 mm and radius ρ = 0.2 mm. The tests were performed under the stress ratio R = −1. The notches in the specimens were cut with a milling cutter and their surfaces were polished after grinding. The tests were realized on a fatigue test stand MZGS-100 where the ratio of torsion moment to bending moment was \( M_T (t)/M_B (t) = tg\alpha = \sqrt 3 /3,1{\text{ }}and\sqrt …

Fatigue crack growth through particulate clusters in polycarbonate material

2011

The interaction of a crack with a perfectly bonded inclusion or a cluster of inclusions in polycarbonate matrix was investigated through both numerical simulations and fatigue tests. Stress intensity factors (K(I)) were evaluated by boundary element method for several particle sizes, position and finally for inclusion cluster as a precursor study for the experiments. The numerical simulation has shown the crack tendency to circumvent the inclusions with consequential reduction of the growth rate. Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out on several particle-filled specimens at constant value of the applied stress intensity factor range (Delta K(Iapp)) highlighting the crack delay due to t…

FATIGUE CRACK PROPAGATION THROUGH AUSTEMPERED DUCTILE IRON MICROSTRUCTURE

2010

Austempered ductile iron (ADI) has a wide range of application, particularly for castings used in automotive and earth moving machinery industries. These components are usually subjected to variable dynamic loading that may promote initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks up to final fracture. Thus, it is important to determine the fatigue crack propagation behavior of ADI. Since fatigue crack growth rate (da/dN) vs. stress intensity factor K data describe fatigue crack propagation resistance and fatigue durability of structural materials, da/dN vs. Ka curves of ADI 1050 are reported here. The threshold amplitude of stress intensity factor Kath is also determined. Finally, the influence…

Sepsis and Coronavirus Disease 2019: Common Features and Anti-Inflammatory Therapeutic Approaches

2020

Great efforts are being made worldwide to identify the specific clinical characteristics of infected critically ill patients that mediate the associated pathogenesis, including vascular dysfunction, thrombosis, dysregulated inflammation, and respiratory complications. Recently, coronavirus disease 2019 has been closely related to sepsis, which suggests that most deaths in ICUs in infected patients are produced by viral sepsis. Understanding the physiopathology of the disease that lead to sepsis after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection is a current clinical need to improve intensive care-applied therapies applied to critically ill patients. Although the whole represent…

Detecting crop irrigation status in orchard canopies with airborne and ASTER thermal imagery

2007

This work provides a description of the research conducted to assess if ASTER satellite data enable the detection of the water status in orchard tree crops. Summer and winter TERRA-ASTER images were acquired over a study area of Seville in southern Spain over a 6-year period. 1076 olive orchards were monitored in this area, obtaining field location, area, tree density, and irrigation status information. Surface temperature images were obtained using the TES method and 0.5 m resolution panchromatic ortho-rectified imagery collected over the entire area to obtain vegetation cover. A comparison study of the temperature difference between orchards under different irrigation schemes is presented…

Dynamic architecture and regulatory implications of the miRNA network underlying the response to stress in melon

2019

miRNAs are small RNAs that regulate mRNAs at both transcriptional and posttranscriptional level. In plants, miRNAs are involved in the regulation of different processes including development and stress-response. Elucidating how stress-responsive miRNAs are regulated is key to understand the global response to stress but also to develop efficient biotechnological tools that could help to cope with stress. Here, we describe a computational approach based on sRNA sequencing, transcript quantification and degradome data to analyse the accumulation, function and structural organization of melon miRNAs reactivated under seven biotic and abiotic stress conditions at two and four days post-treatmen…
