During the evolution of the different species classified within the Saccharomyces genus, each one has adapted to live in different environments. One of the most important parameters that have influenced the evolution of Saccharomyces species is the temperature. Here we have focused on the study of the ability of certain species as Saccharomyces kudriavzevii to grow at low temperatures, in contrast to Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Abstract A new class of biocompatible and scalable phospholipid vesicles was developed, aiming at improving the efficacy of baicalin on the skin. Phosphatidylcholine and baicalin (a natural polyphenol) were hydrated in two steps with a mixture of ethanol, glycerol, and propylene glycol at different ratios, and a low amount of water (4%). Hence, water was almost completely replaced by the co-solvents, which were never used before as predominant dispersing medium of phospholipid vesicles. The vesicles appeared three-dimensionally structured, forming a network that conferred a high viscosity to the dispersions. Rapid adaptation of signaling networks in the fungal pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae

Abstract Background One fundamental question in biology is how the evolution of eukaryotic signaling networks has taken place. “Loss of function” (lof) mutants from components of the high osmolarity glycerol (HOG) signaling pathway in the filamentous fungus Magnaporthe oryzae are viable, but impaired in osmoregulation. Specific stress-induced storage of trehalose, glycerol and D-arabitol in response to oxidative and osmotic stress in Candida albicans.

Candida albicans exponential yeast cells are able to face environmental challenges by mounting a rapid and efficient "general stress response". Here we show that one of the main components of this response consists of the intracellular protective accumulation of the non-reducing disaccharide trehalose and two polyols, glycerol and D-arabitol, an accumulation that occurs in a stress-specific dependent manner. The role of glycerol transporters in yeast cells in various physiological and stress conditions.

Small and uncharged glycerol is an important molecule for yeast metabolism and osmoadaptation. Using a series of S. cerevisiae BY4741-derived mutants lacking genes encoding a glycerol exporter (Fps1p) and/or importer (Stl1p) and/or the last kinase of the HOG pathway (Hog1p), we studied their phenotypes and various physiological characteristics with the aim of finding new roles for glycerol transporters. Though the triple mutant hog1Δ stl1Δ fps1Δ was viable, it was highly sensitive to various stresses. The influence of the mean stress on fatigue life of 10HNAP steel under random loading

Abstract This paper contains the results of uniaxial random load fatigue tests with different mean values performed on 10HNAP steel specimens. The experimental fatigue life was compared with the life determined according to different methods of amplitude transformation of the cycles. Cycles were counted with the rain flow algorithm and damage was cumulated with the Palmgren–Miner hypothesis. Fatigue crack propagation from a cold-worked hole

Abstract The cold expansion process is widely used to enhance the fatigue life of structures with fastener holes. Various studies assert that the cold expansion improves the fatigue strength of fastener holes; however, the improvement of fatigue life is difficult to quantify. Therefore, the influence on fatigue life of cold-worked process was studied by numerical and experimental tests. Then, a parametric study on material hardening behavior and Bauschinger’s parameter was performed for several loading conditions in order to determine their effect on crack growth propagation. The results of the numerical tests have exhibited a good prediction of the fatigue life of the component.
