Low-risk isn’t no-risk: Perinatal treatments and the health of low-income newborns

We investigate the effects of perinatal medical treatments on low-income newborns who are classified as low-risk. A policy rule in The Netherlands states that low-risk deliveries before week 37 should be supervised by physicians and later deliveries only by midwives with no physician present. This creates large discontinuities in the probability of receiving medical interventions only physicians are allowed to perform. Using a regression discontinuity design, we find that babies born slightly before the week-37 cutoff are significantly less likely to die than babies born slightly later. Brominated flame-retardant (BFRs) exposure promotes multiple adverse health outcomes involved in oxidative stress, inflammation, and tissues damage. We investigated BFR effects, known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (47, 99 and 209) in an air-liquid-interface (ALI) airway tissue derived from A549 cell line, and compared with ALI culture of primary human bronchial epithelial cells (pHBEC). Hsp60, a mitochondrial chaperonin highly conserved during evolution, has been found elevated in the cytosol of cancer cells, both in vivo and in vitro, but its role in determining apoptosis during oxidative stress (OS) has not yet been fully elucidated. The aim of the present work was to study the effects of OS on Hsp60 levels and its interactions with procaspase- 3 (p-C3) and p53 in tumor cells. A generally accepted hypothesis is that these forces are overcome by a multistep sequence of adhesive interactions between lymphocytes and endothelial cells. AbstractIn cultured human fibroblasts incubated under hypertonic conditions, the stimulation of system A for neutral amino acid transport, associated to the increased expression of the mRNA for SNAT2 transporter, leads to an expanded intracellular amino acid pool and to the recovery of cell volume. A protein of nearly 60 kDa, recognized by an antiserum against SNAT2, is increased both in the pool of biotinylated membrane proteins and in the total cell lysate of hypertonically stressed cells. The increased level of SNAT2 transporters in hypertonically stressed cells is confirmed by immunocytochemistry. Disulfide stress is a specific type of oxidative stress that is associated with protein cysteinylation. The aim of this research was to characterize experimental models of disulphide stress. Thus, the redox status of free thiols and protein cysteinylation was studied in acute pancreatitis as an in vivo model of inflammation and in cystinosis an in vitro model of cystine accumulation due to its dysfunctional lysosomal transport. Cystine and homocystine levels, and protein cysteinylation rose after taurocholate-induced acute pancreatitis. Oxidation of cysteines in mitochondrial sulfide quinone oxidoreductase and 60S ribosomal protein L7a was observed. Cysteinylated albumin was also detected. …
