Music-listening as an intervention for chronic pain relief : a case study

2014

The field of audioanalgesia is vast. Research shows a combination of pharmacology and music interventions helps to reduce anxiety and stress, resulting in lower levels of pain, pre- and post-operatively. This study is an exploration of the use of music-listening as a method of pain relief with the knowledge that certain types of music aid in reaching altered states of consciousness. In reaching this state of relaxation, the realisation one’s own methods of pain management and goals towards better health are easier. This paper also discusses the importance of collaboration between various ways of practicing medicine, as well as how vital it is to be aware of one’s body and external stresses …

Psychospołeczne skutki pandemii COVID-19

2021

W związku z rosnącą liczbą przypadków, dużą liczbą zgonów i brakiem wydolności systemów ochrony zdrowia na całym świecie ludzie odczuwają strach przed zarażeniem, śmiercią, powikłaniami i kont…

Pidetäänkö asiakkaiden autoista parempaa huolta kuin ihmisistä? : työhyvinvointitutkimus autoalan organisaatiossa

2016

Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin kansainvälisen autoalan organisaation yhden Suomen yksikön työhyvinvoinnin tilaa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää työhyvinvoinnin käsitteiden sekä siihen liittyvien tekijöiden, kuten esimiestyö ja tiedonkulku kautta, miten työhyvinvointi on kohdeorganisaatiossa otettu huomioon. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin marras- joulukuussa 2015 haastattelemalla kohdeorganisaation työntekijöitä. Haastateltavat tutkimukseen valittiin käyttämällä harkitsevaa otantaa. Aineiston analyysimenetelmänä käytettiin sisällönanalyysiä, koska se sopii tämänkaltaisen aineiston analysointiin. Sisällönanalyysi on tekstianalyysia, jossa tarkastellaan jo valmiiksi tekstimuotoisia dokum…

Resilience to social defeat-induced increased in ethanol intake: neuroinflammation response

2022

Transcriptional Rewiring, Adaptation, and the Role of Gene Duplication in the Metabolism of Ethanol of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

2020

Ethanol is the main by-product of yeast sugar fermentation that affects microbial growth parameters, being considered a dual molecule, a nutrient and a stressor. Previous works demonstrated that the budding yeast arose after an ancient hybridization process resulted in a tier of duplicated genes within its genome, many of them with implications in this ethanol “produce-accumulate-consume” strategy. The evolutionary link between ethanol production, consumption, and tolerance versus ploidy and stability of the hybrids is an ongoing debatable issue. The implication of ancestral duplicates in this metabolic rewiring, and how these duplicates differ transcriptionally, remains unsolved. Here, we …

Rauga Kluyveromyces marxianus acetāta tolerance

2017

Maģistra darba mērķis bija novērtēt rauga Kluyveromyces marxianus iespējamos šūnu adaptācijas mehānismus pret acetāta izraisīto stresu. Fermentācijās ar laktozi saturošu substrātu un pievienotu 40 mM acetātu šūnu kultūrai tika novērota paildzināta lag fāze, kuras laikā palielinājās šūnu populācijas rezistence pret acetātu. Pētījumos tika novērota rauga Kluyveromyces marxianus DSM 5422 šūnu populācijas heterogenitāte, kas liecina, ka daļa no šūnām sākotnēji ir tolerantāka pret organisko skābju izraisīto stresu. Kultivējot raugu K. marxianus laktozi saturošā barotnē ar pievienotu acetātu, tika novērota iekššūnu vides pH palielināšanās. Iespējams, raugam K. marxianus vājo skābju izraisīta stre…

An evolutionary perspective on stress responses, damage and repair

2022

Variation in stress responses has been investigated in relation to environmental factors, species ecology, life history and fitness. Moreover, mechanistic studies have unravelled molecular mechanisms of how acute and chronic stress responses cause physiological impacts (‘damage’), and how this damage can be repaired. However, it is not yet understood how the fitness effects of damage and repair influence stress response evolution. Here we study the evolution of hormone levels as a function of stressor occurrence, damage and the efficiency of repair. We hypothesise that the evolution of stress responses depends on the fitness consequences of damage and the ability to repair that damage. To o…
