Study guidance experiences, study progress, and perceived learning outcomes of Finnish university students

2019

In recent decades, the massification and diversification of higher education have generated new challenges for the guidance of university students. The present study focuses on students’ experiences of guidance in relation to their study progress and perceptions of their learning outcomes. The data (n = 4916) were collected from 2010–2013 through yearly Internet surveys whose targeted respondents were the students of a Finnish University. According to the results, general study guidance was a very strong predictor of students’ self-assessed development of their academic and generic skills as well as working life orientation. It also decreased the probability of slow progress in studies. Sig…

La questione del testo letterario negli apprendenti cinesi: regola, creatività, grammatica

2022

This paper explores how Chinese-speaking students approach and represent Italian literary texts. The author refers to Chinese-speaking students of Italian, about whom he has on-the-job experience. The introduction emphasizes how Chinese culture and philosophy, pivoting around the ideal of harmony, befit the textual teaching in Italian language, within the Romance cultural and linguistic context, where the fracture, the Dyonisian, the textual pathos, are important concepts. The subject is approached with a two-fold perspective. The first is more general and expresses the need for an integrated and dynamic encounter between Chinese and Italian culture. The second is more specific and consider…

Autentiskie video materiāli skolēnu klausīšanās prasmju pilnveidei angļu valodas stundās 8. klasē

2022

Diplomdarbā tiek pētīts, kā iespējams pilnveidot 8. klases skolēnu klausīšanās prasmes, izmantojot autentiskos video materiālus angļu valodas stundās. Darbs sniedz ieskatu klausīšanās prasmju nozīmē komunikācijā un autentisko video materiālu izmantošanā angļu valodas stundās. Izvēlētā pētījuma metode bija gadījuma pētījums kādā no Latvijas vidusskolām.

Literacy Skill Development of Children With Familial Risk for Dyslexia Through Grades 2, 3, and 8

2015

This study followed the development of reading speed, reading accuracy, and spelling in transparent Finnish orthography in children through Grades 2, 3, and 8. We compared 2 groups of children with familial risk for dyslexia—1 group with dyslexia (Dys_FR, n = 35) and 1 group without (NoDys_FR, n = 66) in Grade 2—with a group of children without familial risk for dyslexia (controls, n = 72). The Dys_FR group showed persistent deficiency, especially in reading speed, and, to a minor extent, in reading and spelling accuracy. The Dys_FR children, contrary to the other 2 groups, relied heavily on letter-by-letter decoding in Grades 2 and 3. In children not fulfilling the criteria for dyslexia in…

Teaching practices in first-year university : description and analysis of their implications on student studies

2014

In France, there is little research on university teaching and focusing specifically on teaching practices. This present research aims to explore this concept in two different ways. The first part focuses on the description of the practices implemented by teachers during first-year university lectures. Using in situ observation of lecture practices of 49 teachers from five programmes, Administration, Sociology, Psychology and English, we first show that teachers’ practices mostly rely on traditional methods as defined by Bru (2006). However, we show a variety of practices among teachers. The second part of this research updates our knowledge of the implications of these practices on student…

School burnout, depressive symptoms and engagement : Their combined effect on student achievement

2017

Abstract Prior studies have shown that student burnout becomes more prevalent during adolescence and is associated with both depressive symptoms and school engagement. Little is known about how burnout, engagement, and depressive symptoms jointly affect students’ school achievement in terms of grades and skipping class. The main purpose of the current study was to analyse these variables within a full model in order to examine the direct and indirect effects of burnout, engagement and depression on student achievement, while controlling for gender and age. Participants were 210 Italian high school students aged 14 to 16. Student burnout was found to exert the strongest effect on school achi…

Learning research in a laboratory classroom : a reflection on complementarity and commensurability among multiple analytical accounts

2022

With the myriad theories generated through research over the years, a continuing challenge for researchers is to navigate the multitude of theories in order to communicate their research, integrate empirical results, and make progress as a field by building upon empirical research. The Social Unit of Learning project was purposefully designed so that researchers from multiple disciplines with different theoretical perspectives could work together to examine the complexity of the mathematics classroom. In this paper, we reflect on the multiple analytical accounts generated from the project, drawing from the notions of complementarity and commensurability. Two parallel analyses, applying the …

Students' understanding of mathematical models in three norwegian biology courses

2018

International audience; Development in Biology over the last three decades have greatly increased the need for using mathematics in this field. This has influenced biology students which need to develop mathematical knowledge to be able to work with contemporary biology models, including frameworks that are applicable in analyzing the overwhelming flow of biological data (i.e. Labov, Reid & Yamamoto, 2010). Although a quantitative approach is often used in university biology courses, yet they remain largely qualitative and descriptive (Nelson, et. al., 2009). In Norwegian context, where this study will be conducted, there is an increased awareness towards mathematics from the Departments of…
