Abstract Iron solubility, dialysability and transport and uptake (retention + transport) by Caco-2 cells as indicators of iron availability have been estimated in the in vitro gastrointestinal digests of infant foods (adapted, follow-up and toddler milk-based formulas and fruit juices containing milk and cereals (FMC)). Low correlation coefficients (in all cases R -squared ⩽ 37.1%) were obtained between iron solubility or dialysability versus transport or uptake efficiency – a fact emphasizing the importance of incorporating Caco-2 cell cultures to in vitro systems in order to adapt the conditions to those found in in vivo assays. Highlights • Steroid hormones and acute phase proteins in cyclic and pregnant mares were evaluated. • SAA and CRP did not discriminate cyclic and pregnant mares. • Pregnancy induced a limited acute phase response in Spanish purebred mares. • SAA, Hp and CRP were independent of E1 and P4 dynamics during pregnancy.

Between 20 and 30% of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) demonstrate adrenal androgen (AA) excess, detectable primarily by elevated dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) levels. Generalized adrenocortical hyperresponsivity to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation is also observed and may be the principal mechanism determining AA excess in PCOS. The causes of this abnormality are unclear, but increased peripheral metabolism of cortisol, altered factors regulating glucose-mediated glucose disposal, and perhaps ovarian sex steroids may in different ways contribute to the AA excess in PCOS. The eruption of Mt. Etna which occurred on December 24th 2018 was characterized by strombolian activity and fire fountains, emitted by the New South-East Crater and along a fissure that propagated towards the SE. The influence of volcanic emissions on atmospheric deposition was clearly detectable at several kilometres from the source. Wet and dry (bulk) deposition samples were collected each month, through a network of eleven collectors, in the areas of Milazzo, and Priolo between June 2018 and June 2019. The main limnological characteristics of the biogenic meromictic Lake La Cruz, a small karstic lake located on a dolomitic substrate, are outlined below. The lake owes its chemical stratification mainly to high concentrations of bicarbonate and calcium in the permanent monimolimnion, located below a depth of 19 m. A massive precipitation of CaCO3 crystals ("whiting"), occurring in the euphotic zone every summer, leads to further sedimentation and redissolution in deep waters with enhanced CO2 concentrations. The weed Solidago canadensis L. poses a global threat to the environment as it spreads uncontrollably on roadsides, in forests, fields, meadows, and farmland. Goldenrod emits toxic substances that suppress other plants on the site, displacing wild ones. Thus, goldenrod conquers huge areas very quickly. The use of herbicides and mechanical methods does not solve the problem of the spontaneous spread of goldenrod.
