Budd-Chiari syndrome with portal, splenic, and superior mesenteric vein thrombosis treated with TIPS: who dares wins.

2003

A 20 year old man presented with severe ascites and malnutrition due to Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) with portal vein (PV), and splenic and mesenteric vein (SMV) thrombosis in the proximal 3 cm. He had received regular and more frequent paracenteses of up to 17 litres each for eight months. He had a poor BCS prognostic index of 8.41 (table 1). After referral, despite full anticoagulation and diuretic drugs, he deteriorated over three weeks. No thrombophilic disorder was found. Endovascular treatment as first choice in chronic intestinal ischemia.

2002

The purpose of this study was to define the place of endovascular treatment in chronic intestinal ischemia (CII). We report here a series of 19 consecutive patients treated with percutaneous angioplasty of the intestinal arteries. We excluded patients with acute ischemia, from the study. From January 1, 1989 to December 31, 2001, 19 patients with symptomatic CII were treated by endovascular techniques. This study group included 11 men and 8 women with a mean age of 59 years (range 30 to 90 years). The clinical presentation included postprandial pain in 16 patients, weight loss in 14 patients, with a mean weight loss of 7.4 kg (range 0 to 30 kg); and gastroparesis in 2 patients. Stenoses wer…

The impact of isolated lesions on white-matter fiber tracts in multiple sclerosis patients

2015

Infratentorial lesions have been assigned an equivalent weighting to supratentorial plaques in the new McDonald criteria for diagnosing multiple sclerosis. Moreover, their presence has been shown to have prognostic value for disability. However, their spatial distribution and impact on network damage is not well understood. As a preliminary step in this study, we mapped the overall infratentorial lesion pattern in relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis patients (N = 317) using MRI, finding the pons (lesion density, 14.25/cm3) and peduncles (13.38/cm3) to be predilection sites for infratentorial lesions. Based on these results, 118 fiber bundles from 15 healthy controls and a subgroup of 23 …

Superior pedicle retroauricular island flap for ear and temporal region reconstruction: anatomic investigation and 52 cases series. Cordova A, Pirrello R, D'Arpa S, Moschella F. Source Cattedra di Chirurgia Plastica e Ricostruttiva, Dipartimento di Discipline Chirurgiche ed Oncologiche, Università degli Studi di Palermo, Palermo, Italy. adriana.cordova@excite.com Abstract BACKGROUND: On the basis of a previously published anatomic study on the superior auricular artery (SAA) and on a series of 52 consecutive cases, the authors propose a new superior pedicle retroauricular island flap (SP-RIF) for defects of the upper half of the ear and for temporal region or superficial helical defects. Sympathetic blocks for visceral cancer pain management: A systematic review and EAPC recommendations.

2015

The neurolytic blocks of sympathetic pathways, including celiac plexus block (CPB) and superior hypogastric plexus block (SHPB) , have been used for years. The aim of this review was to assess the evidence to support the performance of sympathetic blocks in cancer patients with abdominal visceral pain. Only comparison studies were included. All data from the eligible trials were analyzed using the GRADE system. Twenty-seven controlled studies were considered. CPB, regardless of the technique used, improved analgesia and/or decrease opioid consumption, and decreased opioid-induced adverse effects in comparison with a conventional analgesic treatment. In one study patients treated with superi…

Emotions in E-Learning

2008

This paper presents the results of an educational innovation in Higher Education, whose aim is to design and test a pedagogical model for e-learning. This paper has the main aim to identify and evaluate emotional factors related to e-learning by means of a survey research. The results show emotional well-being scores higher than wrong-being, identifying a range of emotions, which are related to different emotional states in e-learning. In addition, we present features of teachers’ and students’ virtual discourses in forums of discussion starting from types of educational interaction and kind of emotions related to certain settings of learning activity.
