Copper(II) complexes of new N-benzothiazole sulfonamides (HL1= N-2-(benzothiazole)naphtalensulfonamide and HL2 = N-2-(6-chlorobenzothiazole)toluenesulfonamide) with ethylenediamine (en) and diethylenetriamine (dien) have been synthesized and characterised. The crystal structures of [Cu(dien)2](L1)2 (1) and [Cu(en)2(H2O)2](L2)2 (2) compounds have been determined. The metal centre adopts a “4+2” distorted octahedral environment in both complexes. Unusually, the sulfonamidate anions act as counterions. Spectroscopic properties are in good agreement with the crystal structures. The active center of superoxide dismutase from Propionibacterium shermanii

A self-consistent description of the EPR spectra and of the Mossbauer spectra of the natural superoxide dismutase from Propionibacterium shermanii with ferric iron as an active centre is presented. The spectra were measured at pH 6.5, 7.8 and 9.4. The theoretical approach is based on the use of the complete crystal field Hamiltonian for the high-spin ferric complexes with due regard for the terms of the fourth power of the electronic spin. It is shown that a SOD molecule can exist in two conformations. The low-pH conformation has predominantly trigonal symmetry, while the high-pH conformation has the symmetry close to the «extreme rhombic». This interpretation is in full agreement with EXAF…

Halogenated squaraine dyes 1 and 2 possess favorable photophysical and in vitro photobiological properties that make these new class of molecules interesting for photodynamic therapeutic applications. For a better understanding of the mechanism of their photobiological activity, we have analyzed the DNA damage and the cytotoxicity induced by these photosensitizers in mammalian cells and cell-free systems in the presence and absence of various additives and scavengers. Both photoactivated squaraines were found to be similar efficient in inducing single-strand breaks (SSB) in cell-free DNA when compared with the cellular DNA. Abstract A fungal endophyte MD89 with obvious antioxidant activities was isolated from pigeon pea and identified as Chaetomium globosum by ITS sequence. Different fractions from MD89 culture were compared and evaluated by total phenol (TP) content, total flavonoid (TFL) content, DPPH radical scavenging, reducing power and lipid peroxidation assays, respectively. Results showed that EtOAc extracts had high content of TP and TFL, and strong antioxidant activities (IC 50 value was 6.87, 15.19, 16.78 μg/mL, respectively). The optical absorption spectra of native and N(3-)-reacted Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) has been studied in the temperature range 300-10 K. The broad d-d bands observed in the room temperature spectrum, centered at 14,700 cm-1 (native enzyme) and at 15,550 cm-1 (N(3-)-reacted enzyme), are clearly split at low temperature into two bands each, centered at 12,835 and 14,844 cm-1 and at 14,418 and 16,300 cm-1, respectively. The thermal behavior of the 23,720 cm-1 band present in the spectrum of the native enzyme indicates that this band belongs to the His61-->Cu(II) ligand to metal charge transfer transition. Abstract The effect of aeration level and iron concentration on Azotobacter chroococcum 23 growth, PHB accumulation and antioxidative enzyme activities was investigated in shake flask experiments. Biomass yield and carbon source conversation coefficients increased in the presence of iron in the growth medium and under decreased aeration. The highest biomass production was observed for the culture grown in a medium with 36 μM of initial iron concentration and moderate aeration level. Loss-of-function mutations in the DJ-1 gene are linked to rare autosomal recessive forms of parkinsonism. In Drosophila, two DJ-1 orthologs have been identified, DJ-1α and DJ-1β. Several studies have shown that DJ-1β mutant flies are viable and fertile but exhibit age-dependent locomotor defects, shortened life span, and enhanced sensitivity to toxins that induce oxidative stress response compared to control flies. We also demonstrated that long-term dietary supplementation with antioxidant compounds was effective at increasing life-span values of DJ-1β mutants.
