Effectiveness of classic physical therapy proposals for chronic non-specific low back pain: a literature review
2018
Introduction Chronic low back pain is a pathological process that compromises the functionality and quality of life worldwide. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of classical physiotherapy in the management of non-specific chronic low back pain. Methods A literature search in English electronic databases was performed from November to December of 2015. Only those studies addressing chronic non-specific low back pain by manual therapy and different types of exercises methods were included, and those, which combined acute or subacute pain with systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines, were excluded. Studies involving cognitive-behavioral approaches were al…
Hospital and outpatient models for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A systematic review of comparative studies for health outcomes, experienc…
2021
The number of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantations has risen in the past 20 years. The practice of outpatient Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation programs is increasing in an attempt to improve the quality of patient care and reduce the demand for hospital admission. A systematic review of 29 comparative studies between in-hospital and outpatient treatment of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, with no restriction by outpatient regime was conducted. This study aims to analyse the current evidence on the effects of the outpatient model on patient-centred outcomes, comparing both in-hospital and outpatient models for autologous and allogeneic HSCT using the Triple Aim framework: …
The effects of lasers on bond strength to ceramic materials: A systematic review and meta-analysis
2018
Lasers have recently been introduced as an alternative means of conditioning dental ceramic surfaces in order to enhance their adhesive strength to cements and other materials. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to review and quantitatively analyze the available literature in order to determine which bond protocols and laser types are the most effective. A search was conducted in the Pubmed, Embase and Scopus databases for papers published up to April 2017. PRISMA guidelines for systematic review and meta-analysis were followed. Fifty-two papers were eligible for inclusion in the review. Twenty-five studies were synthesized quantitatively. Lasers were found to increase bo…
Review & meta-analysis: isopropanolic black cohosh extract iCR for menopausal symptoms - an update on the evidence
2020
A systematic literature search revealed 35 clinical studies and one meta-analysis comprising 43,759 women, of which 13,096 were treated with isopropanolic Cimicifuga racemosa extract (iCR). Compared to placebo, iCR was significantly superior for treating neurovegetative and psychological menopausal symptoms, with a standardized mean difference of 0.694 in favor of iCR (p<0.0001). Effect sizes were larger when higher dosages of iCR as monotherapy or in combination with St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum [HP]) were given ( 1.020 and 0.999, respectively), suggesting a dose-depend- ency. For psychological symptoms, the iCRþHP combination was superior to iCR monotherapy. Efficacy of iCR was c…

Diagnostic accuracy of adding copeptin to cardiac troponin for non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
2018
Introduction This study aimed to determine the diagnostic accuracy of adding copeptin to cardiac troponin (cTn) on admission to the emergency department (ED) for non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) compared to cTn alone. Materials and methods A literature search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library was performed (search date: April 13, 2018). Primary studies were included if they accurately reported on patients with symptoms suggestive of acute myocardial infarction and measured both cTn alone and cTn with copeptin upon admission to the ED. The patients with evidence of ST elevation myocardial infarction were excluded. To assess the risk of bias for the included studies,…
The short-term efficacy and safety of artificial total disc replacement for selected patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease compared with ant…
2018
PurposeTo systematically compare the efficacy and safety of lumbar total disc replacement (TDR) with the efficacy and safety of anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) for the treatment of lumbar degenerative disc disease (LDDD).MethodsThe electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library were searched for the period from the establishment of the databases to March 2018. The peer-reviewed articles that investigate the safety and efficacy of TDR and ALIF were retrieved under the given search terms. Quality assessment must be done independently by two authors according to each item of criterion. The statistical analyses were performed using RevMan (version 5.3) and Stata (v…
