Intrauterine and Neonatal Exposure to Opioids: Toxicological, Clinical, and Medico-Legal Issues
2023
Opioids have a rapid transplacental passage (i.e., less than 60 min); furthermore, symptoms characterize the maternal and fetal withdrawal syndrome. Opioid withdrawal significantly impacts the fetus, inducing worse outcomes and a risk of mortality. Moreover, neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) follows the delivery, lasts up to 10 weeks, and requires intensive management. Therefore, the prevention and adequate management of NAS are relevant public health issues. This review aims to summarize the most updated evidence in the literature regarding toxicological, clinical, and forensic issues of intrauterine exposure to opioids to provide a multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach for managing …

Drug Induced Liver Injury (DILI) due to variability in monacolin K content in Red Yeast Rice (RYR): An expert opinion
2020
Abstract Introduction Red yeast rice (RYR) is an effective cholesterol-lowering nutraceutical reversibly inhibiting 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase. As liver damage is a possible (albeit rare) side effect of HMG-CoA inhibitors, it make sense to focus on the tolerability of the liver to RYR extracts. The aim of this paper is to offer an expert opinion on the risk of liver damage by the use of RYR extract. Methods A review of the available literature has been carried out and critically reviewed by the authors. Results According to a large meta-analysis of 53 randomized clinical trials comprising 112 treatment arms, which included 8535 subjects with 4437 in the RYR arm and …
Organisational climate and employee health outcomes: a systematic review
2019
Organisational climate, particularly safety climate, has been documented as a crucial element in promoting occupational health and safety. However, most previous studies have focused more on safety issues (e.g., injuries and accidents) rather than health outcomes (e.g., illnesses, stress, etc). A comprehensive review is also lacking in relation to understanding the organisational climate–health relationship between different levels of analysis, different data sources and different analytical procedures. We conducted a systematic review to investigate previous scholarly contributions to organisational climate and health. The reviewed articles were obtained from three databases: ISI Web of Kn…
Assessment of genetically modified oilseed rape MS8, RF3 and MS8×RF3 for renewal of authorisation under regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 (application EFS…
2017
Efsa Panel On Genetically Modified Organisms (gmo)Opinion scientificRequestor: European CommissionQuestion number: EFSA-Q-2016-00569; Following the submission of application EFSA-GMO-RX-004 under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 from Bayer CropScience, the Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms of the European Food Safety Authority (GMO Panel) was asked to deliver a scientific risk assessment on the data submitted in the context of the renewal of authorisation application of the genetically modified (GM) herbicide-tolerant oilseed rape MS8, RF3 and MS89RF3. The data received in the context of this renewal application contain post-market environmental monitoring reports, systematic searches and…
Digital safety.
Undergraduate Students’ Acceptance of a Reciprocating One-File System for Endodontic Treatment
2020
Abstract Objectives Reciprocating endodontic one-file systems are a comparatively new method for root canal shaping. Even though the mechanical properties are comparable to modern rotating mechanical systems, data about subjective assessment and application quality are scarce. This study evaluates the reciprocating one-file system in undergraduate education. Materials and Methods A total of 42 undergraduate students without experience regarding reciprocating file systems filled in a questionnaire in four different points in time (t 1–t 4) anonymously. The questionnaire was based on a numerical rating scale ranging from 0 to 10. Statistical Analysis A least significant difference post-hoc an…
Safety of hospital discharge before return of bowel function after elective colorectal surgery
2020
Ileus is common after colorectal surgery and is associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications. Identifying features of normal bowel recovery and the appropriateness for hospital discharge is challenging. This study explored the safety of hospital discharge before the return of bowel function.A prospective, multicentre cohort study was undertaken across an international collaborative network. Adult patients undergoing elective colorectal resection between January and April 2018 were included. The main outcome of interest was readmission to hospital within 30 days of surgery. The impact of discharge timing according to the return of bowel function was explored using multiva…
Sustainable Food Consumption Practices: Insights into Consumers’ Experiences
2021
In recent years, the increasing consumer concern towards food safety, environmental sustainability and social justice issues have stimulated new consumption practices more oriented towards social, economic, and environmental sustainability [1–3]. This includes the growing consumers’ preference for organic food, local food, and other sustainable food and beverage consumption (Contribution 1) [ 4], as well as the spread of alternative distribution chains, which emphasise the importance of local food productions [ 5 ], the short-distance transportation of food, and the direct relationship between consumers and producers, although, as Kwil and colleagues (Contribution 2) highlighted in this Spe…
Speciation of dimethyltin(IV) – and trimethyltin(IV) – carbocysteinate and – glutamate systems in aqueous media
2008
The formation of complex species in the dimethyltin(IV) and trimethyltin(IV)-carboxymethyl-L-cysteinate (carbocysteinate) systems in NaClaq, at different ionic strengths, and in a multicomponent Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl- and SO42- medium representative of the seawater major composition, is discussed. Experimental results give evidence for the formation of the following species (L¼carbocysteinate): [(CH3)2Sn(L)]0, [(CH3)2Sn(HL)]+, [(CH3)2Sn(OH)(L)]-, [(CH3)2Sn(OH)2(L)]2- in the DMT–CCYS system, and [(CH3)3Sn(HL)]0, [(CH3)3Sn(L)]- and [(CH3)3Sn(OH)(L)]2- in the TMT-CCYS system. The ionic strength dependence of formation constants was taken into account by an extended Debye Huckel type equation…
