Short-term effect of ammonia concentration and salinity on activity of ammonia oxidizing bacteria.

2010

A continuously aerated SHARON (single reactor high activity ammonia removal over nitrite) system has been operated to achieve partial nitritation. Two sets of batch experiments were carried out to study the effect of ammonia concentration and salinity on the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). Activity of AOB raised as free ammonia concentration was increased reaching its maximum value at 4.5 mg NH 3 -N l −1 . The half saturation constant for free ammonia was determined (K NH 3 = 0.32 mg NH 3 -N l −1 ). Activity decreased at TAN (total ammonium–nitrogen) concentration over 2,000 mg NH 4 -N l −1 . No free ammonia inhibition was detected. The effect of salinity was studied by adding…

Aquatic invertebrate assemblages in ponds from coastal Mediterranean wetlands

2014

Invertebrate aquatic assemblages in ponds from Mediterranean wetlands are composed of organisms belonging to different taxonomic groups, which present a wide range of sizes (from small rotifers to large crustaceans or insects). Although they are often sampled and analyzed separately, the ecological links among these organisms should be considered, especially in very shallow waters. In our study, invertebrate assemblages (including micro-, macrozooplankton and macroinvertebrates) were characterized in eight shal- low lakes from Mediterranean wetlands in Southeastern Spain. A great spatial and temporal variability in the assemblages and in some environmental features was observed. The communi…

Aspek Biologi dan Pemetaan Daerah Penangkapan Lobster (Panulirus spp) di Perairan Kampung Akudiomi Distrik Yaur Kabupaten Nabire

2017

Adaptation to Low Salinity Promotes Genomic Divergence in Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua L.).

2015

How genomic selection enables species to adapt to divergent environments is a fundamental question in ecology and evolution. We investigated the genomic signatures of local adaptation in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) along a natural salinity gradient, ranging from 35‰ in the North Sea to 7‰ within the Baltic Sea. By utilizing a 12 K SNPchip, we simultaneously assessed neutral and adaptive genetic divergence across the Atlantic cod genome. Combining outlier analyses with a landscape genomic approach, we identified a set of directionally selected loci that are strongly correlated with habitat differences in salinity, oxygen, and temperature. Our results show that discrete regions within the …

Oxygen isotope and salinity measurements of coastal surface waters in the Gulf of Maine

2020

These data include salinity and oxygen isotope measurements of water samples collected from coastal sites along the Gulf of Maine between 2003 and 2015. In particular, a suite of samples were collected along the coast of Maine, east of Penobscot Bay, on a monthly basis between April 2014 and March 2015. These data also include several freshwater samples collected from the Kennebec and Penobscot Rivers on a semi-monthly basis in 2014 and 2015. For the water samples with sample IDs starting with DSW, JSW, NSW, or OSW: The water samples were collected by hand from shore or boat using French square glass bottles with phenolic polycone lined caps. Salinity was measured using a Oakton SALT 6+ han…

Plant Response to Saline-Water Irrigation in a Sicilian Vineyard

2012

This chapter presents results of a 3-year field investigation in a vineyard located in Sicily (Mazara del Vallo, Trapani) within the framework of the Project “Evolution of cropping systems as affected by climate change” (CLIMESCO). Soil-plant responses to two saline irrigation waters were determined by measuring soil hydrological characteristics, soil salinity, crop transpiration and stomatal conductance in field plots of a Sicilian vineyard. The results proved that crop transpiration (T r) and stomatal conductance (G s) were significantly affected by soil salinity conditions, expressed by electrical conductivity of soil saturation extract (ECe). Significant reductions in T r and G s were f…

Submarine groundwater discharge investigations in Sicilian and Brazilian coastal waters using an underwater gamma-ray spectrometer

2006

Abstract Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in coastal zones was monitored using in situ underwater gamma-ray spectrometry of radon decay products ( 214 Bi). Several sites were visited during the IAEA'2002 expedition to south-eastern Sicily, where SGD variations were observed in the Donnalucata boat basin. The continuous monitoring carried out for 3 days at the site closest to the coast revealed an anticorrelation dependence of 222 Rn concentration with tide and salinity. The 222 Rn activity concentrations in seawater varied from 2.3 kBq m −3 (during high tides) to 4.8 kBq m −3 (during low tides). In situ gamma-ray spectrometric measurements were also carried out during the IAEA–UNESCO'2…

Geostatistic study of salt distribution in “laguna de Salinas”. Alicante. Spain

1999

The distribution of different types of salts and the dynamic processes leading to their distribution in a playa saltlake of 3x2 Km wide, were drawn using statistics and geostatistics of the data obtained by augering the soil at different depths, following a regular square grid sampling scheme. The lake is now colonised by Halophytes which density corresponds inversely with the salinity gradient, although the main surface of the lake remains bare.

Effects of Changing Rainfall on the Limnology of a Mediterranean, Flowthrough-Seepage Chain of Lakes

2006

Relationships between groundwater and lake ecology are often overlooked, but they may be strong, particularly in seepage lakes. As a result, the nature and degree of groundwater effects on lakes are usually neglected. In this study interactions among rainfall, groundwater and surface water and their limnological effects were traced seasonally for two years of changing rainfall in a Spanish flowthrough, seepage lake complex. Cumulative rainfall dictated recharge of groundwater with delays of nine months. Groundwater discharge, in turn, increased surface discharge downstream. Mediated by the geographical setting of lakes, both fluxes impinged on lake water renewal time, but effects of the lat…
