Incidence rate of metastases in the oral cavity: a review of all metastatic lesions in the oral cavity

2021

Background Metastases in the oral cavity are rare and account for only 1 to 3% of all malignant lesions in this area. The primary location from which most metastases have been described in the oral cavity in adult patients include lungs, breasts, kidneys and colon. Material and Methods A systematic search of the literature was carried out following the PRISMA statement in PubMed database. Clinical trials and case series published in the last 10 years [2010-2020] were eligible to be selected. The headings and keywords used in the searches were “cancer” AND “oral metastases”, “incidence” AND “oral metastases”, “oral metastases” AND “jaw bone”, “oral metastases” AND “soft tissue”. Incidence and profile of benign epithelial tumors of salivary glands from a single center in Northeast of Brazil

2020

Background Benign tumors of the salivary glands are a group of lesions with varied histopathological and clinical spectrum. The aim was to determine the incidence and clinicopathological characteristics of benign salivary gland neoplasms diagnosed between 2007 and 2016 in a single center located in northeastern Brazil. Material and Methods Records regarding sex, age, anatomical location, histopathological subtype and treatment were retrieved, and data were analyzed using the Stata/IC software (version 12.0). Results There were above 7,100 cases of neoplasms in the head and neck region, of which 403 corresponded to salivary gland neoplasms. Of these, 238 (59%) were benign, being pleomorphic …

Soft palate preservation after tumor resection with transoral laser microsurgery

2012

Background: Management and preservation of the soft palate is dependent on clinical stage and tumor histology. However, available literature is scarce regarding the palate preservation with the use of laser CO 2 . Objectives : We report the results obtained after management with laser surgery and soft palate preservation in three patients with salivary gland neoplasms. Method: Three patients with minor salivary gland tumors were treated by means of transoral laser microsurgery. All tumors were assessed using magnetic resonance imaging. All tumors were >3 cm. Soft palate function was preserved and reconstruction was performed with primary closure. Patients began oral feeding the same day and…

Hybrid salivary gland tumor of the upper lip or just an adenoid cystic carcinoma? Case report

2010

A 65 year-old male patient with a one year-duration tumoral growth located in the upper lip was diagnosed on incisional biopsy as epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma. After wide surgical excision the histopathological analysis revealed the lesion was composed predominantly (>90%) of adenoid cystic carcinoma. In new sections it was found a very small and isolated area of adenoid cystic carcinoma at the bottom of the incisional biopsy. As surgical margins were free of lesion, no adjuvant treatment was given. The occurrence of a transitory ischaemic attack at 36 months of follow-up led to a neurological and MRI evaluation, which disclosed a well-defined 3.5x3 cm lesion suggestive of metastasis,…

Clear Cell Changes in Salivary Gland Neoplasms: A 20-Year Retrospective Study

2017

Background Clear cells are observed histopathologically in both benign and malignant neoplasms but their presence in salivary gland tumors has not been extensively documented. Material and Methods With IRB approval, the archive of the University of Florida College of Dentistry oral pathology biopsy service was retrospectively searched from 1994-2014 for all benign and malignant salivary tumors. Epidemiological data, tumor location and duration, and type of tumor were recorded. A four reviewer panel examined the original slides. Reviewers scaled each case as 0 (no clear cells present), 1 (few to focal clear cells), 2 (less than 50% clear cells), and 3 (greater than 50% clear cells). Results …

Usefulness of antimitochondrial antibody 113-1 in diagnosis and classification of salivary gland tumours with oncocytic differentiation

2010

Abstract Introduction and objectives Salivary gland tumours usually show great variability both in their morphopathology as well as their clinical behaviour. In the present study, the usefulness of antimitochondrial monoclonal antibody 113-1 in the diagnosis and categorization of salivary tumours was studied. Material and methods A series of 22 benign and malignant salivary tumours and 5 non-tumoral salivary gland specimens were immunohistochemically analysed using an antimitochondrial monoclonal antibody (Ab Mo 113-1), which recognises a non-glycosylated mitochondrial protein of 60 Kd. Results The use of this antibody allowed us to recognize all salivary tumours with oncocytic differentiat…

Epidemiologic analysis of salivary gland tumors over a 10-years period diagnosed in a northeast Brazilian population

2020

Background Salivary gland tumors (SGT) correspond to a heterogeneous group of lesions with variable biological behavior. The present study aimed to determine the distribution and demographic findings of salivary gland neoplasms in a northeast Brazilian population. Material and Methods A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. A total of 588 cases of SGT were diagnosed between 2006 and 2016 of 4 pathology services in the state of Sergipe, Brazil. All cases were reviewed, and data such as sex, age, anatomical location, and histopathological diagnosis were collected. Results A total of 470 (79.9%) tumors were benign and 118 (20.1%) were malignant. The majority of the pat…

Accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of fine needle aspiration biopsy in salivary gland tumours: A retrospective study

2010

Objective: the aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of fine needle aspiration biopsies (FNAB) of salivary gland tumours performed at the Erasto Gaertner Hospital over the course of a four year period. Study design: A retrospective study was carried out between 2001-2005 to review the cases of patients with salivary gland tumours who had undergone pre-operative FNAB and had been diagnosed during post-operative histopathology examination. Results: A total of 106 cases of salivary gland tumours were considered for this study, but 27 cases (25.5%) of the samples were considered unsatisfactory for analysis. the sensitivity, specificity and accura…

Incidence and prevalence of salivary gland tumours in Valparaiso, Chile

2014

Background : To determine the incidence and prevalence of salivary gland tumours in the province of Valparaíso, Chile. Material and Methods : Retrospective review of salivary gland tumours diagnosed between the years 2000 and 2011 from four local pathology services. Information on demographics and histopathology were retrieved from the medical records. Results : The study sample consisted of 279 salivary gland tumours. Prevalence and incidence rates per 100.000 persons were 15.4 and 2.51, respectively. Most of the neoplasms corresponded to benign tumours (70.3%). The most affected gland was the parotid gland. Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign tumour (53.8%) and mucoepidermoid c…

Application of propolis extract, nanovitamin C and nanovitamin E to prevent alveolar osteitis after impacted lower third molar surgery. A randomized,…

2020

Background Propolis has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and healing properties. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a gel containing 2% of propolis extract, 0.2% of ascorbic acid and 0.2% of tocopherol acetate is effective in preventing surgical complications related to impacted lower third molar extractions. Material and Methods A randomized, double-blind, split-mouth study was performed. Fifteen patients were recruited who needed bilateral impacted lower third molar extractions with a similar surgical difficulty. A test or placebo gel was administered randomly inside post-extraction sockets. Each patient was instructed to apply the gel 3 times/day in the surgical wound for a w…
