Salinity and Bacterial Diversity: To What Extent Does the Concentration of Salt Affect the Bacterial Community in a Saline Soil?
2014
In this study, the evaluation of soil characteristics was coupled with a pyrosequencing analysis of the V2-V3 16S rRNA gene region in order to investigate the bacterial community structure and diversity in the A horizon of a natural saline soil located in Sicily (Italy). The main aim of the research was to assess the organisation and diversity of microbial taxa using a spatial scale that revealed physical and chemical heterogeneity of the habitat under investigation. The results provided information on the type of distribution of different bacterial groups as a function of spatial gradients of soil salinity and pH. The analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA showed differences in bacterial compositi…
Selection of potential probiotic lactobacilli from pig feces to be used as additives in pelleted feeding
2006
Thirty-five isolates from pig feces were identified as Lactobacillus reuteri (12 strains), Lactobacillus mucosae (7), Lactobacillus plantarum (6), Lactobacillus kitasatonis (3), Lactobacillus rossiae (2), Lactobacillus ultunensis (2), Lactobacillus crispatus (2), and Lactobacillus intestinalis (1) by partial sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA. All isolates were detected at 8-9 log CFU g(-1). Preliminarily, strains were selected based on resistance to heat treatments (ca. 70 degrees C for 10 s). The decrease in viability for some L. reuteri, L. mucosae, L. plantarum, L. kitasatonis, and L. rossiae strains was lower than 1 log cycle. Selected strains were further characterized for acid and bil…
Covalent RGD modification of the inner pore surface of polycaprolactone scaffolds
2011
Scaffold production for tissue engineering was demonstrated by means of a hot compression molding technique and subsequent particulate leaching. The utilization of spherical salt particles as the pore-forming agent ensured complete interconnectivity of the porous structure. This method obviated the use of potentially toxic organic solvents. To overcome the inherent non-cell-adhesive properties of the hydrophobic polymer polycaprolactone (PCL) surface activation with a diamine was performed, followed by the covalent immobilization of the adhesion-promoting RGD-peptide. The wet-chemical approach was performed to guarantee modification throughout the entire scaffold structure. The treatment wa…
Weak aurophilic interactions in a series of Au(III) double salts.
2015
In this work, several new examples of rare AuIII⋯AuIII aurophilic contacts are reported. A series of gold(III) double salts and complexes, viz. [AuX2(L)][AuX4] (L = 2,2′-bipyridyl, X = Cl 1, Br 2; L = 2,2′-bipyrimidine, X = Cl 3, Br 4; L = 2,2′-dipyridylamine, X = Cl 5, Br 6), [AuX3(biq)] (biq = 2,2′-biquinoline, X = Cl 7, Br 8), [LH][AuX4] (L = 2,2′-bipyridyl, X = Cl 9; L = 2,2′-bipyrimidine, X = Cl 12; L = 2,2′-dipyridylamine, X = Cl 14, Br 15; L = 2,2′-biquinoline, X = Cl 17, Br 18), [AuBr2(bpy)]2[AuBr4][AuBr2] 10, [AuCl2(bpm)][AuCl2] 11, (bpmH)2[AuBr4][AuBr2] 13, and (dpaH)[AuBr2] 16 (1, 2, and 7 were reported earlier) was synthesized by coordination of a particular ligand to the AuIII …
