Master´s thesis in English (EN501) The thesis discusses whether the austerity measures implemented between 2010 and 2015 affected the education system and subsequently influenced inequality in England. The two research questions guide the examination of the thesis, where the first research question studies: How austerity measures have affected education in England, both in general and more specifically for disadvantaged children? Furthermore, the second research question investigates: How the distribution of austerity cuts influenced inequality in England? In order to structure the arguments, the thesis is divided into five chapters. Initially, the first two chapters form a background for t…
Young Norwegian Learners’ Perception and Recognition of English Variants : Relationships with language exposure and media intake
2021
Master´s thesis in English (EN502) English as a tool of communication is emphasized in the Norwegian subject curriculum reform of 2020, and no competence aims are directly connected towards the choice of English variant. The present study investigates young Norwegian learners’ perception of differences between American English and British English and their ability to identify a specific variant, seen in relation to passive English exposure. The data collection comprised two parts: a questionnaire of exposure to English outside of school and a perception test of selected phonetic features contrasting the English variants under investigation. 40 students in year 5 participated in the study, a…

Master's thesis education EN502 - University of Agder 2018 This thesis studies English language argumentative writing instruction in Norwegian lower secondary schools with an eye towards evaluating year 10 students’ academic preparation for argumentative writing in upper secondary. Argumentation is a key skill for academic success and is an important skill for civic life in a democracy. While research is scarce on the topic of academic and argumentative writing in upper secondary school, it is even scarcer in lower secondary. Because of this, the present study is one of the first studies examining argumentative writing proficiency at the lower level. In order to examine the situation in low…

Master´s thesis in English (EN502) The purpose of this thesis has been to investigate how English academic writing instruction in Norway is perceived by upper secondary students, and how it is carried out from their point of view as a support to improve their academic writing skills. The following was the research question for my thesis: What do students in Norwegian upper secondary school know about writing academic English, and how do they practice writing English as a preparation for higher education? The question calls for a review of the current ESL instruction as well as a review of the English subject curriculum (LK20). The corpus consisted of nine students of English, three females …

Religious Education in Secularist Kindergartens? Pedagogical Leaders on Religion in Norwegian ECEC
2022
According to the legal framework, religion forms a certain part of Norwegian early childhood education in publicly owned kindergartens. As the only Scandinavian country where this is the case, the object clause (statement of purpose) for Norwegian kindergartens defines basic values in the Christian and humanist heritage and tradition as the value foundation for the institution. In this article we explore the impact of the processes of secularization and pluralization on the pedagogical content of early childhood education, and how some pedagogical leaders understand the religious elements. Empirically, the article is partly based on qualitative interviews targeting seven public kindergarten…
Possibilities and challenges in sustained capacity-building in early childhood education and care (ECEC) institutions: ECEC leaders’ perspectives
2020
This paper investigates early childhood education and care (ECEC) institutions’ opportunities to build a learning organization and master future innovations by focusing on core components, implementation drivers, leadership, and collective collaborative systems. The paper is based on results from semi-structured interviews with ten ECEC leaders from three different municipalities in Norway that had taken part in the Being Together (BT) innovation five years earlier. Three areas were identified as crucial for the continuation of ECEC teachers’ capacity building: (1) a strong focus on implementation processes and sustainability; (2) transformational leadership; and (3) developing professional…
Disaster risk perceptions and multinational cooperation in Barentsburg, Svalbard
2022
Abstract Svalbard’s geographical positioning, environmental characteristics and multinational population make it conducive for considering informality and multinational cooperation in disaster risk reduction and response. Most research examining disaster risks and disasters for Svalbard has focused on Norwegian efforts in and for the main settlement of Longyearbyen, with none covering Svalbard’s second-largest settlement of Barentsburg. This paper addresses this gap by analysing how 21 Barentsburg residents deal with disasters. We conducted semi-structured interviews, visually aided by the revised PRISM (Pictorial Representation of Illness and Self Measure) tool, to examine interviewees’ di…
