A Short and Improved Synthesis of the Antiprotozoal Abietane Diterpenoid (–)-Sugikurojin A

An efficient and straightforward semisynthesis of the antiprotozoal abietane diterpenoid (–)-sugikurojin A, starting from the readily available methyl ester of callitrisic acid (4-epi-dehydroabietic acid) isolated from sandarac resin, is reported. This optimized semisynthetic route provides a convenient source of the antiprotozoal compound, in four steps from methyl callitrisate in 50% overall yield, for further biological studies.
Analytical characterisation of the biodeterioration of diterpenoid labdanic varnishes used in pictorial techniques: Sandarac and Manila copal

Abstract The deterioration produced by fungal and bacterial growth on the sandarac and Manila copal, diterpenoid varnishes traditionally used as art materials, was evaluated by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py–GC–MS). Test specimens, coated with a solidified thin layer of the studied varnishes, were inoculated and incubated with selected fungi and bacteria obtained from collections and oil paintings affected by biodeterioration, and analysed by the above mentioned techniques. Significant changes were detected, showing evidence of deterioration processes caused or favoured by some of the studied microorganisms.

[EN] The abietane-type diterpenoids are significant bioactive compounds exhibiting a varied range of pharmacological properties. In this study, the first synthesis and biological investigation of the new abietane-diterpenoid (+)-4-epi-liquiditerpenoid acid (8a) together with several of its analogs are reported. The compounds were generated from the readily available methyl callitrisate (7), which was obtained from callitrisic acid present in Moroccan Sandarac resin. Abstract The study of several different naturally aged films of organic painting materials, is described. Materials studied include drying oils (walnut, poppy seed and linseed oil) resin-based paint varnishes (the triterpenoid dammar and the diterpenoids sandarac and turpentine) and protein-based binding media (egg yolk and casein). Semisynthesis of the Antiviral Abietane Diterpenoid Jiadifenoic Acid C from Callitrisic Acid (4-Epidehydroabietic Acid) Isolated from Sandarac Resin

The semisynthesis of the antiviral abietane diterpenoid (+)-jiadifenoic acid C starting from the available methyl ester of callitrisic acid (4-epidehydroabietic acid) isolated from sandarac resin is reported. A protocol for the isolation of methyl callitrisate (methyl 4-epidehydroabietate) in gram quantities from sandarac resin is also described. Allylic C-17 oxygenation was introduced by regioselective dehydrogenation of the isopropyl group of methyl callitrisate with DDQ followed by selenium-catalyzed allylic oxidation. Abstract A procedure based on the technique of the pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py–GC–MS) has been applied, in this work, in order to determine the composition of diterpenoid resin employed in art works. The method is based on the on line derivatization of these resins using hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS). Results obtained were compared with those previously reported in literature from Venice turpentine, Strasbourg turpentine, colophony, sandarac and Manila copal using this same method and with those others from in situ thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH).
