Electronic paramagnetic resonance power saturation of wooden samples

2009

The deterioration of wood used for artifacts of artistic interest involves the production of different free radicals from the macromolecules of the wooden matrix (cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose). Among the techniques able to provide information about these free radicals, the contribution of electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) can be very valuable. In this paper, the study of EPR signals (with g 2) of both modern and ancient wooden taxa was undertaken in order to analyze some features of the free radicals in natural wood. In particular, we have studied the microwave power saturation behaviors of seasoned wooden samples from ten species, and we have found remarkable differences betw…

Saturation excess runoff numerical simulation

2005

Saturation excess runoff is a relevant process which needs additional experimental and modeling efforts. This work is focused on its numerical modeling. The final objective is the successive interpretation of ongoing experimental monitoring results in two watersheds in different areas of Italy where the saturation excess runoff formation mechanism seems to be important. The numerical solution of the two-dimensional Richards’ equation allows the evaluation of the sensitivity to the various influent parameters : rainfall intensity, soil properties, depth and initial water content, slope and hillslope length. Also the subsurface flow is simulated at the same time, allowing the evaluation of th…

Long-term monitoring of soil bulk density and erosion rates in two Prunus Persica (L) plantations under flood irrigation and glyphosate herbicide tre…

2021

Abstract Early season fruit production for the northern European market is highly intensive in fertilization, machinery, irrigation and the use of herbicides. Those conditions increase the soil losses and soil compaction and threaten the Sustainable Goals for Development of the United Nations by 2030. Long-term soil erosion measurements are necessary to determine the sustainability of agriculture managements. Moreover, soil erosion on flood irrigation land is a topic that request more surveys and research as rainfed sloping terrains attracted all the attention of scientists and research investment. Improved Stock Unearthing Method (ISUM) was applied to two 15 years-old herbicide treated fie…

Laboratory testing of Beerkan infiltration experiments for assessing the role of soil sealing on water infiltration

2018

Abstract Soil surface sealing is a major cause of decreased infiltration rates and increased surface runoff and erosion during a rainstorm. The objective of this paper is to quantify the effect of surface sealing on infiltration for 3 layered soils with different textures for the upper layer and investigate the capability of BEST procedure to catch the formation of the seal and related consequences on water infiltration. Rainfall experiments were carried out to induce the formation of the seal. Meanwhile, Beerkan infiltration runs were carried out pouring water at different distances from the soil surface (BEST-H versus BEST-L runs, with a High and Low water pouring heights, respectively) f…

Factors Influencing Point Measurement of Near-surface Saturated Soil Hydraulic Conductivity in a Small Sicilian Basin

2017

Hydraulic conductivity of saturated soil, Ks, controls many hydrological processes. Parameterization of basin hydrological models in terms of Ks is complicated and uncertain owing to the very high spatial variability of this soil property. A small Sicilian basin was intensively sampled by the simplified falling head technique to obtain spatially distributed Ks data, and an attempt to explain their spatial variability on the basis of soil physical characteristics, digital elevation model-derived topographic attributes and land cover was carried out. High Ks values were obtained when clay content was low and both elevation and mean slope were high. Moreover, differences in Ks among land cover…

Estimating saturated soil hydraulic conductivity by the near steady-state phase of a Beerkan infiltration test

2017

Abstract Single-ring infiltration experiments carried out in the field, such as the Beerkan runs, allow easy and inexpensive characterization of soil hydraulic properties, and specifically saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, Ks, by maintaining the functional connection of the sampled soil volume with the surrounding soil. However, a single infiltration experiment is not enough to determine Ks. The simplest way to obtain the necessary additional data is based on the assessment of the soil texture and structure characteristics. In this investigation, a simplified method, named SSBI (Steady version of the Simplified method based on a Beerkan infiltration run), was developed to estimate Ks b…

Somijas valsts pieredze kompetencēs balstīta izglītības satura reformas īstenošanā

2019

Bakalaura darba “Somijas valsts pieredze kompetencēs balstīta izglītības satura reformas īstenošanā” autores Zanes Višķeres pētījuma mērķis ir analizēt Somijas valsts pieredzi kompetencēs balstīta izglītības satura reformas īstenošanā, tās ieviešanas gaitu un būtiskākās izmaiņas pamatizglītības izglītības standartā. Darbs sastāv no ievada, trīs nodaļām, nobeiguma, izmantotās literatūras un avotu saraksta ar 49 vienībām. Bakalaura darba apjoms — 55 lappuses, tajā iekļauti 5 attēli. Pirmajā nodaļā tiek veikts teorētisks izglītības reformu nepieciešamības pamatojums. Otrajā nodaļā tiek analizēts kompetenču jēdziens izglītībā un aplūkots Somijas valsts definētais kompetenču rāmja ietvars. Treša…

High-performance liquid chromatography of amino acids, peptides and proteins

1990

Abstract The thermodynamic constants, associated with the interaction of three proteins with triazine dye affinity sorbents, have been derived from bath and frontal analysis experiments. In cases where mass-transfer restrictions are very high, calculation of the thermodynamic constants directly from frontal analysis experiments could not be achieved. In such cases, a portion of the adsorbate was always present in the effluent, a situation which has its effect as the split peak phenomenon. With Fractogel-based triazine dye affinity sorbents none of the test proteins applied in frontal analysis were adsorbed. A similar behaviour was observed for a Cellufine sorbent during the adsorption of hu…

The space age and the origin of space research

2001

The exploration of space is one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century. In the ideal photo album of this century one could hardly avoid including such pictures as our blue planet seen from space and the human footprint on the Moon’s surface; the close-up images of a comet’s nucleus and the rough landscape of Mars; the floating of astronauts in the black vacuum around a space station and the rings of Saturn photographed from an approaching spacecraft.

Identification and quantification of phosphatidylcholines containing very-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid in bovine and human retina using liqu…

2010

The retina is one of the vertebrate tissues with the highest content in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). A large proportion of retinal phospholipids, especially those found in photoreceptor membranes, are dipolyunsaturated molecular species. Among them, dipolyunsaturated phosphatidylcholine (PC) molecular species are known to contain very-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLC-PUFA) from the n-3 and n-6 series having 24-36 carbon atoms (C24-C36) and four to six double bonds. Recent interest in the role played by VLC-PUFA arose from the findings that a protein called elongation of very-long-chain fatty acids 4 (ELOVL4) is involved in their biosynthesis and that mutations in the ELOVL…
