The Domestication of the Other. Hermes, the Lyre and the Satyrs between Violence and Civilization

2012

Within the general frame of violence and its representations in Ancient Greece, this paper focuses on the myth of Hermes inventing the lyre and on the relationship between this god and the Satyrs. The representation of Satyrs on vessels used at Symposia clearly shows the civilizing effects of music, that allows a shift from “savagery” to “culture”, and from the “other” to the “self”.

‘Non humana viscera sed centies sestertium comesse’ (Petr. Sat. 141,7): Philomela and the Cannibal Heredipetae in the Crotonian Section of Petronius’…

2013

The connection between the themes of money and death is widespread in Petronius' Satyricon, and is definitely not limited to the Cena Trimalchionis, where it has been widely examined. The aim of my paper is to consider the peculiar form that the motif takes in the Crotonian section of Petronius' Satyricon, and its connections with the mythical memory of the Procne and Philomela story. The theme of corpses dismemberment appears at the end of the episode of the shipwreck, the one immediately preceding the Crotonian section, through Encolpius' reflections on the sepultura practice and the destiny of human bodies after our death (Petronius, Satyricon 115, 6-19); the same theme closes the introd…

Il satiro come maestro di moralità. Una stravagante invenzione di Jan Kochanowski

2016

Three visits of Jan Kochanowski in Padua, at that time under the rule of the Republic of Venice which influenced both cultural and intellectual life in the city, had a considerable impact on his literary output. This essay proves that there was a significant mark of the Serenissima entering into the theatrical life, related to one of his earliest texts, Satyr albo Dziki Mąz (The Satyr or the wild Man), dedicated to the king Sigismund II August and published presumably for the first time in 1563. An unsolved issue concerns not only the idea of making the Satyr a morality teacher, but also the question whether it was just a text meant for reading or for being performed in a theatrical form. T…

Riso, potere e modelli letterari nella Coena Trimalchionis

2022

Significance of butterfly eyespots as an anti-predator device in ground-based and aerial attacks

2003

Many butterfly genera are characterised by the presence of marginal eyespots on their wings. One hypothesis to account for an occurrence of eyespots is that these wing pattern elements are partly the outcome of visual selection by predators. Bicyclus anynana (Satyrinae) has underside spotting on its wings but there is also a seasonal form in which the eyespots are reduced in size or totally absent. This natural variation gives us a useful tool to test the hypothesis that marginal eyespot patterns can decoy the attacking predator by, at least sometimes, diverting attack from vital body parts to the edges of the wings. We used lizards, Anolis carolinensis, and pied flycatchers, Ficedula hypol…

Forests as dispersal barriers for Erebia medusa (Nymphalidae, Lepidoptera)

2000

Summary The nymphalid butterfly Erebia medusa is a typical species of meadows that are poor in nitrogen and fallow land. In forests, it is only found on clearings with meadow-like structures. However, it is missing on wind exposed places, too. 239 imagoes of E. medusa were sampled in the Aggtelek Karst region (north-eastern Hungary) at six different localities at the end of May 1997. The sample sizes varied between 33 and 46. The studied karst area has a typical forest steppe vegetation and is characterised by a mosaic-like distribution of meadows and forests. The sampled butterflies were analysed by allozyme electrophoresis. The level of polymorphism was significantly higher in the samples…

Torre del Greco, villa marittima in contrada Sora: 65. Statua di Satiro

2019

Data from: Rumbling orchids: how to assess divergent evolution between chloroplast endosymbionts and the nuclear host

2015

Phylogenetic relationships inferred from multilocus organellar and nuclear DNA data are often difficult to resolve because of evolutionary conflicts among gene trees. However, conflicting or “outlier” associations (i.e., linked pairs of “operational terminal units” in two phylogenies) among these data sets often provide valuable information on evolutionary processes such as chloroplast capture following hybridization, incomplete lineage sorting, and horizontal gene transfer. Statistical tools that to date have been used in cophylogenetic studies only also have the potential to test for the degree of topological congruence between organellar and nuclear data sets and reliably detect outlier …
