Three visits of Jan Kochanowski in Padua, at that time under the rule of the Republic of Venice which influenced both cultural and intellectual life in the city, had a considerable impact on his literary output. This essay proves that there was a significant mark of the Serenissima entering into the theatrical life, related to one of his earliest texts, Satyr albo Dziki Mąz (The Satyr or the wild Man), dedicated to the king Sigismund II August and published presumably for the first time in 1563. An unsolved issue concerns not only the idea of making the Satyr a morality teacher, but also the question whether it was just a text meant for reading or for being performed in a theatrical form. This essay suggests a solution, trying to prove that the Satyr was closely connected with the culture of Venice theatre present, for instance, in masquerade marches.
