A scalable multiagent system architecture for interactive applications

2013

Interactive applications like crowd simulations need to properly render the virtual world while simulating the interaction of thousands of agents at the same time. The computational workload generated by these two tasks highly increases with the number of the simulated agents, requiring a scalable design of the multiagent system. In this paper, we present, in an unified manner, a distributed multiagent system architecture that can manage large crowds of autonomous agents at interactive rates while rendering multiple views of the virtual world being simulated. This architecture consists of a distributed multiagent system and a complementary distributed visualization subsystem. We also presen…

Towards a Simulator of Integrated Long-Term Care Systems for Elderly People

2014

In this paper, we propose a simulator for integrated long-term care systems using as a starting point a holistic model of care systems for people that need long term care, the Sustainable Socio-Health Model (SSHM). The implementation of the simulator on the Jason multi-agent platform allows the tool to include the human interactions, preferences, and social abilities that take place between elderly people and the staff of healthcare systems (doctors, social workers and nurses). In addition, the use of this multi-agent platform provides the required scalability for simulating population sizes of different orders of magnitude. The paper shows the model to be implemented in the simulator, the…

Migrating from a Centralized Data Warehouse to a Decentralized Data Platform Architecture

2021

To an increasing degree, data is a driving force for digitization, and hence also a key asset for numerous companies. In many businesses, various sources of data exist, which are isolated from one another in different domains, across a heterogeneous application landscape. Well-known centralized solution technologies, such as data warehouses and data lakes, exist to integrate data into one system, but they do not always scale well. Therefore, robust and decentralized ways to manage data can provide the companies with better value give companies a competitive edge over a single central repository. In this paper, we address why and when a monolithic data storage should be decentralized for imp…

An Efficient Implementation of Parallel Parametric HRTF Models for Binaural Sound Synthesis in Mobile Multimedia

2020

The extended use of mobile multimedia devices in applications like gaming, 3D video and audio reproduction, immersive teleconferencing, or virtual and augmented reality, is demanding efficient algorithms and methodologies. All these applications require real-time spatial audio engines with the capability of dealing with intensive signal processing operations while facing a number of constraints related to computational cost, latency and energy consumption. Most mobile multimedia devices include a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) that is primarily used to accelerate video processing tasks, providing high computational capabilities due to its inherent parallel architecture. This paper describes…

Tensions and Paradoxes of Scaling Up : A Critical Reflection on Physical Activity Promotion

2022

Background: Achieving system-level, sustainable ‘scale-up’ of interventions is the epitome of successful translation of evidence-based approaches in population health. In physical activity promotion, few evidence-based interventions reach implementation at scale or become embedded within systems for sustainable health impact. This is despite the vast published literature describing efficacy studies of small-scale physical activity interventions. Research into physical activity scale-up (through case-study analysis; evaluations of scale-up processes in implementation trials; and mapping the processes, strategies, and principles for scale-up) has identified barriers and facilitato…

Business model scaling and growth hacking in digital entrepreneurship

2023

Creating an innovative product and validating an innovative business model may not be enough for digital startups to be competitive. To grow fast and expand globally, digital startups need to innovate their business model during the scaling phase. A pragmatic approach has recently been proposed to support digital entrepreneurs engaging in business-model innovation during the scaling phase (i.e., business-model scaling), a strategy known as growth hacking. However, we know little about its theoretical grounding and how effective growth hacking is, as businesses lack methodologies to assess its effectiveness before committing resources and investments. To fill this gap, we developed a method …

A Hybrid Multigroup Coclustering Recommendation Framework Based on Information Fusion

2015

Collaborative Filtering (CF) is one of the most successful algorithms in recommender systems. However, it suffers from data sparsity and scalability problems. Although many clustering techniques have been incorporated to alleviate these two problems, most of them fail to achieve further significant improvement in recommendation accuracy. First of all, most of them assume each user or item belongs to a single cluster. Since usually users can hold multiple interests and items may belong to multiple categories, it is more reasonable to assume that users and items can join multiple clusters (groups), where each cluster is a subset of like-minded users and items they prefer. Furthermore, most of…

SaaS architecture and pricing models

2014

In the new era of computing, SaaS software with different architectural characteristics might be priced in different ways. Even though both pricing and architectural characteristics are responsible for the success of the offering; the relationship between architectural and pricing characteristics has not been studied before. The present study fills this gap by employing a multi-case research. The findings accentuate that flexible and well-designed architecture enables different pricing models; however, poorly designed architecture limits also the pricing. Scalability and high level of modularity are the major enablers of a great variety of pricing models. Using public cloud services may lea…

Scalable implementation of dependence clustering in Apache Spark

2017

This article proposes a scalable version of the Dependence Clustering algorithm which belongs to the class of spectral clustering methods. The method is implemented in Apache Spark using GraphX API primitives. Moreover, a fast approximate diffusion procedure that enables algorithms of spectral clustering type in Spark environment is introduced. In addition, the proposed algorithm is benchmarked against Spectral clustering. Results of applying the method to real-life data allow concluding that the implementation scales well, yet demonstrating good performance for densely connected graphs. peerReviewed

Stationary, Second Use Battery Energy Storage Systems and Their Applications: A Research Review

2021

The global demand for electricity is rising due to the increased electrification of multiple sectors of economic activity and an increased focus on sustainable consumption. Simultaneously, the share of cleaner electricity generated by transient, renewable sources such as wind and solar energy is increasing. This has made additional buffer capacities for electrical grids necessary. Battery energy storage systems have been investigated as storage solutions due to their responsiveness, efficiency, and scalability. Storage systems based on the second use of discarded electric vehicle batteries have been identified as cost-efficient and sustainable alternatives to first use battery storage syste…
