Sympatric Ixodes-tick species: pattern of distribution and pathogen transmission within wild rodent populations

2018

AbstractThe generalist tick Ixodes ricinus is the most important vector for tick-borne pathogens (TBP), including Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, in Europe. However, the involvement of other sympatric Ixodes ticks, such as the specialist vole tick I. trianguliceps, in the enzootic circulations of TBP remains unclear. We studied the distribution of I. ricinus and I. trianguliceps in Central Finland and estimated the TBP infection likelihood in the most common rodent host in relation with the abundance of the two tick species. Ixodes trianguliceps was encountered in all 16 study sites whereas I. ricinus was frequently observed only at a quarter of the study sites. The abundance of I. ricinus…

Influence of Scapular Position on the Core Musculature Activation in the Prone Plank Exercise

2017

Cortell-Tormo, JM, García-Jaén, M, Chulvi-Medrano, I, Hernández-Sánchez, S, Lucas-Cuevas, ÁG, and Tortosa-Martínez, J. Influence of scapular position on the core musculature activation in the prone plank exercise. J Strength Cond Res 31(8): 2255-2262, 2017-Prone plank is a widely used exercise in core stability training. Research has shown that pelvic tilt plays an important role on the electromyographic (EMG) activation of core musculature. However, the influence of scapular position on EMG activation is currently unknown. Therefore, this study evaluated the influence of scapular position on the core muscles during a prone plank. Surface EMG of the rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (…

The influence of a depressed scapular alignment on upper limb neural tissue mechanosensitivity and local pressure pain sensitivity

2017

A depressed scapular alignment could lead to prolonged and repetitive stress or compression of the brachial plexus, resulting in sensitization of neural tissue. However, no study has investigated the influence of alignment of the scapulae on sensitization of upper limb neural tissue in otherwise asymptomatic people. In this case-control study, we investigate the influence of a depressed scapular alignment on mechanosensitivity of the upper limb peripheral nervous system as well as pressure pain thresholds (PPT). Asymptomatic individuals with neutral vertical scapular alignment (n = 25) or depressed scapular alignment (n = 25) participated. We measured the upper limb neurodynamic test (ULNT1…

BBE31 from the Lyme disease agent Borrelia burgdorferi, known to play an important role in successful colonization of the mammalian host, shows the a…

2019

Abstract Lyme disease is a tick-borne infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex spirochetes. The spirochete is located in the gut of the tick; as the infected tick starts the blood meal, the spirochete must travel through the hemolymph to the salivary glands, where it can spread to and infect the new host organism. In this study, we determined the crystal structures of the key outer surface protein BBE31 from B. burgdorferi and its orthologous protein BSE31 (BSPA14S_RS05060 gene product) from B. spielmanii. BBE31 is known to be important for the transfer of B. burgdorferi from the gut to the hemolymph in the tick after a tick bite. While BBE31 exerts its function by intera…

Sonographische Verlaufskontrolle nach experimenteller Muskeldenervierung

2008

AIM: To describe sonographical results following acute, experimental muscle denervation. METHOD: Denervation of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles was performed in 28 New Zealand white rabbits by segmental resection of the suprascapular nerve. The changes in the sonographic image of the muscles were follow up and documented at short intervals over 2 months. RESULTS: The sonographically detectable changes following denervation follow a definite pattern. In addition to the reduction in muscle diameter, sonographical signs of denervation include an increase of echodensity and an inhomogeneity of echotexture that appeared on day 14 after injury and became more prominent at larger inter…

Osteocondroma solitario de la escápula: localización poco habitual para un tumor frecuente

2021

Osteochondroma is a benign bone tumor that usually affects children and young adults. It is typically located in the metaphysis of long bones around the knee, although it could also affect flat bones like scapula. We report the case of a 11-year-old child with one year of evolution painful tumor at the dorsal surface of the scapula. He was diagnosed with osteochondroma of the scapula, uncommon location for this tumor. Due to the persistence of the symptomatology surgical excision was performed.

[Bilateral elastofibroma dorsi].

1999

Changes of sonographic, magnetic resonance tomographic, electromyographic, and histopathologic findings within a 2-month period of examinations after…

1998

This study compares sonographical, histopathological, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and electromyographical (EMG) findings following acute muscle denervation. We performed an experimental denervation of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles on 35 New Zealand white rabbits by segment resection of the suprascapular nerve. The sonographical appearance of the supraspinatus muscle was followed and documented at short time intervals within a 2-month follow-up period. The sonographical, histopathological, and MRI changes due to denervation suggest a regular pattern. Apart from the reduction of the muscle diameter, there were considerable sonographical signs of denervation with an increas…

Immediate effects of active versus passive scapular correction on pain and pressure pain threshold in patients with chronic neck pain.

2012

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of active vs passive scapular correction on pain and pressure pain threshold at the most symptomatic cervical segment in patients with chronic neck pain. METHODS: Twenty-three volunteers with chronic, idiopathic neck pain were recruited (age, 38.9 ± 14.4 years; sex [man/woman], 3/20; Neck Disability Index, 28.1% ± 9.9%). Subjects were randomly allocated to 2 groups: active scapular correction or passive scapular correction. Pressure pain threshold and pain intensity rated on a numerical rating scale during a posteroanterior glide over the most symptomatic cervical segment were measured before and immediately after the active…
