Revenue-Aware Resource Allocation in the Future Multi-Service IP Networks

2006

In the future IP networks, a wide range of different service classes must be supported in a network node and different classes of customers will pay different prices for their used node resources based on their Service-Level-Agreements. In this paper, we link the resource allocation issue with pricing strategies and explore the problem of maximizing the revenue of service providers in a network node by optimally allocating a given amount of node resources among multiple service classes. Under the linear pricing strategy, the optimal resource allocation scheme is derived for the case that no firm Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees are required for all service classes, which can achieve the …

Network channel allocation and revenue maximization

2002

This paper introduces a model that can be used to share link capacity among customers under different kind of traffic conditions. This model is suitable for different kind of networks like the 4G networks (fast wireless access to wired network) to support connections of given duration that requires a certain quality of service. We study different types of network traffic mixed in a same communication link. A single link is considered as a bottleneck and the goal is to find customer traffic profiles that maximizes the revenue of the link. Presented allocation system accepts every calls and there is not absolute blocking, but the offered data rate/user depends on the network load. Data arriva…

On Using “Stochastic Learning on the Line” to Design Novel Distance Estimation Methods

2018

In this paper, we consider the problem of Distance Estimation (DE) when the inputs are the x and y coordinates of the points under consideration. The aim of the problem is to yield an accurate value for the real (road) distance between the points specified by the latter coordinates. This problem has, typically, been tackled by utilizing parametric functions called Distance Estimation Functions (DEFs). The parameters are learned from the training data (i.e., the true road distances) between a subset of the points under consideration. We propose to use Learning Automata (LA)-based strategies to solve the problem. In particular, we resort to the Adaptive Tertiary Search (ATS) strategy, propose…

Looking Beyond Genres: Identifying Meaningful Semantic Layers from Tags in Online Music Collections

2011

A scheme for identifying the semantic layers of music-related tags is presented. Arguments are provided why the applications of the tags cannot be effectively pursued without a reasonable understanding of their semantic qualities. The identification scheme consists of a set of filters. The first is related with social consensus, user-count ratio, and n-gram properties of tags. The next relies on look-up functions across multiple databases to determine the probable semantic layer of each tag. Examples of the semantic layers with prevalence rates are given based on application of the scheme to a subset of the Million Song Dataset. Finally, a validation of the results was carried out with an i…

Suitability of simplified milk recording methods for genetic evaluations using test-day models in dairy sheep

2008

Nowadays in dairy sheep, test-day records are collected monthly under an alternate morning/evening system. This alternate system was implemented because of the steady increase in recording cost per sheep observed in the last few decades. Furthermore, additional modifications to the testing schemes have been proposed to reduce the costs of milk recording. In dairy sheep, the cost for milk recording is indeed too high compared both with individual outputs and with other dairy species. Therefore, the purposes of the present study were: i) to compare estimated breeding values (EBVs) for milk yield using different simplified testing schemes with a test-day sire model; ii) to evaluate the effect …

A mesh less approch based upon Radial basis function Hermite collocation method for predicting the cooling and the freezing times of foods

2005

This work presents a meshless numerical scheme for the solution of time dependent non linear heat transfer problems in terms of a radial basis function Hermite collocation approach. The proposed scheme is applied to foodstuff's samples during freezing process; evaluation of the time evolution of the temperature profile along the sample, as well as at the core, is carried out. The moving phase-change zone is identified in the domain and plotted at several timesteps. The robustness of the proposed scheme is tested by a comparison of the obtained numerical results with those found using a Finite Volume Method and with experimental results.

Coexistence between IEEE802.15.4 and IEEE802.11 through cross-technology signaling

2017

When different technologies use the same frequency bands in close proximity, the resulting interference typically results in performance degradation. Coexistence methods exist, but these are often technology specific and requiring technology specific interference detection methods. To remove the root cause of the performance degradation, devices should be able to negotiate medium access even when using different technologies. To this end, this paper proposes an architecture that allows crosstechnology medium access by means of a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) scheme. In order to achieve cross-technology synchronization, which is required for the TDMA solution, an energy pattern beacon…

Coloring-based resource allocations in ad-hoc wireless networks

2011

It is well known that CSMA/CA protocols exhibit very poor performance in case of multi-hop transmissions, because of inter-link interference due to imperfect carrier sensing. We propose to control such an interference by preallocating temporal slots in which different sets of network nodes are allowed to contend for the channel access. The approach is based on distributed coloring algorithms with limited signaling overhead that can be customized as a function of the network topology and traffic load.

A Networking Framework for Multi-Robot Coordination

2008

Autonomous robots operating in real environments need to be able to interact with a dynamic world populated with objects, people, and, in general, other agents. The current generation of autonomous robots, such as the ASIMO robot by Honda or the QRIO by Sony, has showed impressive performances in mechanics and control of movements; moreover, recent literature reports encouraging results about the capability of such robots of representing themselves with respect to a dynamic external world, of planning future actions and of evaluating resulting situations in order to make new plans. However, when multiple robots are supposed to operate together, coordination and communication issues arise; w…
