Gardens on Canvas and Paper: Cataloguing Botanical Abundance in Late Medici Tuscany

2016

What is the purpose of portraying a branch from a pear tree in bloom and fruit, of listing hundreds of citrus varieties or of dissecting a huge truffle? When Cosimo III (1642–1723), the penultimate grand duke of the Medici dynasty, commissioned artists and botanists alike to create comprehensive visual and textual catalogues of Tuscan flora, aesthetics and curiosity seemed to go hand in hand with a demonstration of knowledge and prosperity. This article deals with the collection of botanical paintings by Bartolomeo Bimbi (1648–1730), housed in the Casino della Topaia close to the city of Florence, and with the mainly handwritten work of the grand ducal botanist Pier Antonio Micheli (1679–17…

Uwarunkowania parentyfikacji doświadczanej w dzieciństwie i okresie dorastania z perspektywy młodych dorosłych

2017

Parentification has also been known and studied as role reversal in family. Despite the fact that this concept entered scientific literature in the 1970’s, it has not received adequate attention and its causes and mechanisms have not been fully established. In Poland, parentification has been on the margins of psychological research and its prevalence, causes, and effects are unknown. Consequently, there is lack of practical guidelines for practitioners working with families in which role reversal might have taken place. The goal of this study is to gain insight into the prevalence, conditions, and types of parentification retrospectively reported by young adults reflecting on their family …

Recommendations for neonatologists and pediatricians working in first level birthing centers on the first communication of genetic disease and malfor…

2021

Abstract Background Genetic diseases are chronic conditions with relevant impact on the lives of patients and their families. In USA and Europe it is estimated a prevalence of 60 million affected subjects, 75% of whom are in developmental age. A significant number of newborns are admitted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) for reasons different from prematurity, although the prevalence of those with genetic diseases is unknown. It is, then, common for the neonatologist to start a diagnostic process on suspicion of a genetic disease or malformation syndrome, or to make and communicate these diagnoses. Many surveys showed that the degree of parental satisfaction with the methods of c…

A Precise Measurement of the $\tau$ Polarisation at LEP-1

2000

The $\tau$ polarisation has been studied with the ${\rm e^+e^-}\to \tau^+\tau^-$ data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in 1993, 1994 and 1995 around the Z resonance firstly through the exclusive decay channels ${\rm e}\nu\bar{\nu}$ , $\mu\nu\bar{\nu}$ , $\pi\nu$ , $\rho\nu$ and ${\rm a}_1\nu$ and secondly with an inclusive hadronic analysis which benefits from a higher efficiency and a better systematic precision. The results have been combined with those previously published on 1990 to 1992 DELPHI data, to produce results which reflect the full LEP-1 statistics. The fit of the $\tau$ polarisation dependence on the production angle yielded the polarisation parameters ${\cal A}_{_{\sc…

Impact of the process of isolating humic acids from peat on their propertiesA paper submitted to the Journal of Environmental Engineering and Science.

2009

Humic substances (HS) can be isolated in preparative quantities from low rank coal, peat, and soil. Traditionally, treatment with solutions of NaOH, KOH, or metal salts (K4P2O7) has been used for their isolation. The aim of this article is to study the effectiveness of different technologies in extracting HS from peat as well as the impact of the different extractive technologies on the properties of the isolated HS. Yields of HS depend very much on the extraction process (extractant, temperature, pretreatment procedures, solvent, mixing intensity); however, the properties of the substances obtained (molecular mass, number of functional groups, spectral characteristics) differ significantly…

Contribution of Anales de Pediatría to the international visibility of Spanish paediatric research in the Web of Science (2010–2014)

2016

Objective: To describe the role of Anales de Pediatría in highlighting Spanish paediatric research, and to identify the journals with which it competes internationally. Material and method: Spanish paediatric articles, including those from Anales de Pediatría were identified using the Paediatrics category of the Science Citation Index (2010–2014), and their volume and document type was analysed. For original articles and review articles, the year, the citation and journal of publication was studied. The journals were classified as general and specialised. The productivity of general journals was analysed according to their language, JCR quartile, and article access. Results: A total of 2701…

Publications on paediatric anaesthesia: a quantitative analysis of publication activity and international recognition.

2000

A comprehensive compilation of the current international literature on paediatric anaesthesia is lacking. The aim of this study was to identify all articles on clinical practice in paediatric anaesthesia, to name the respective journals, and to assess the publication activity and international recognition of selected countries for a 6-yr period (1993–1998). The search comprised an article-to-article evaluation (‘hand search') of 12 peer-reviewed anaesthesia journals, as well as an Internet-based (‘SilverPlatter') MedlineTM-search (3.900 medical journals, US National Library of Medicine), both limited to original articles, case reports, reviews and editorials. Selected physical characteristi…

A clinical staging model for bipolar disorder: longitudinal approach

2020

AbstractBipolar disorder (BD) has been identified as a life-course illness with different clinical manifestations from an at-risk to a late stage, supporting the assumption that it would benefit from a staging model. In a previous study, we used a clustering approach to stratify 224 patients with a diagnosis of BD into five clusters based on clinical characteristics, functioning, cognition, general health, and health-related quality of life. This study was design to test the construct validity of our previously developed k-means clustering model and to confirm its longitudinal validity over a span of 3 years. Of the 224 patients included at baseline who were used to develop our model, 129 (…

Analytical study by SEM/EDX and metallographic techniques of materials used in the iron production process during the iberian period

2002

Abstract This work is the archaeometric study of different types of materials used in iron production in the Iberian Period (6th–2nd century b.c.). The materials were recovered in several archaeological digs (which makes it possible to date the archaeological remains) on different sites in the Levante area of the Iberian Peninsula. The samples selected for this study belong to different materials used in the ancient iron production process such as ores, slags, finished objects, etc. The use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is proposed to observe surface images of the samples to determine their morphological, microstructural and topographic characteristics to obtain valuable information…

The comparative biological effects of spatial management measures in protecting marine biodiversity: a systematic review protocol

2015

Background: The global decline of marine biodiversity and the perceived need to protect marine ecosystems from irreparable alterations to ecosystem functioning and ecosystem service provision have produced an extensive range of spatial management measures (SMMs). The design of SMMs is a complex process often involving the integration of both conservation objectives and socio-economic priorities and the resultant trade-offs are highly dependent on the management regime in place. Future marine management is likely to involve greater use of different forms of protected areas with differing levels of protection, particularly for sites where there are multiple competing demands. Consequently, ev…
