DACRON© 360 WOVEN: EXPERIMENTAL CHARACTERIZATION AND COMPUTATIONAL ASPECTS
2010
In this paper a first experimental study on Dacron© 360 woven constitutive behavior is presented. This woven is widely adopted in sail manufacturing, it is obtained by weaving polyethylene terephthalate (PET) yarn and it shows some peculiar features due to its own manufacturing process. The experimental tests, in terms of tensile tests and cyclic tests, clearly show the orthotropy features of the material, its high strength and deformability. The examination with optical microscope of the tested specimen allows to evidence the interaction between warp and weft yarns. The obtained results represent a first step for the definition of a correct computational approach to such materials.
Damage identification by a modified Ant Colony Optimization for not well spaced frequency systems
2011
Recently, it has been shown , that a damage detection strategy based on a proper functional calculated on the analytical signal of the structural dynamical response, consents to identify very low damage level. In this regard, they stressed the efficiency of Hilbert Transform to obtain the analytical response representation that shows more sensitivity for predicting damage with respect to the simple signal response. Then, a damage identification procedure based on the minimization of the difference between theoretical and measured data was proposed with satisfactory results. Unfortunately, this procedure, since the need of use of band pass filter around the natural frequency of the system, f…
The interphase elasto-plastic damaging model
2013
Heterogeneous materials present a mechanical response strongly dependent on the static and kinematic phenomena occurring in the constituents and at their joints. In order to analyze this kind of materials it is a common practice to distinguish a macroscopic length scale of interest from a mesoscopic one, where the mesoscopic length scale is of the order of the typical dimensions of the constituents. At the mesoscopic level the interaction between the units is simulated by mean of apposite mechanical devices. Among these devices is popular the zero thickness interface model where contact tractions and displacement discontinuities are the primary static and kinematic variables respectively. H…
A Cohesive-frictional interface model subjected to mixed complex loading paths
2017
The paper presents a cohesive-frictional interface model based on surface damage mechanics. The proposed model is developed under the assumption that the fracture energies in mode I and in mode II are different values, as shown by several experimental evidences. At difference with the most spread available interface models, only one isotropic interface internalvariable is adopted for the constitutive model. The interface constitutive model is developed in a Thermodynamic consistent framework with an Helmholtz free energy potential and the fulfillment of the thermodynamic principles is obtained enforcing the Clausius-Duhem inequality. The damage/friction activation functions and dissipative …
Numerical analysis of delamination in through-thickness reinforced composite laminates
2009
Composite laminates show a high vulnerability to out-of-plane actions, responsible for localized damage between two adjacent laminae, i.e. delamination phenomenon. A recent technological solution to improve the strength of the composite laminates in the thickness direction consists in inserting through-thickness reinforcement. In this paper, the composite delamination is analyzed in the context of non-linear fracture mechanics by an original two-phase interface model able to describe the anisotropic elastic and post-elastic mechanical response given by the presence of the reinforcement fibres. The two phases (adhesive joint or matrix of the composite and the reinforcement) are characterized…
Influence of design mistakes and material degradation on the collapse of a long-span RC roof in South Italy
2020
Abstract In 2004, during ordinary maintenance work, consisting in the waterproofing of a building located in the South of Italy, the long-span (14.50 m) in situ cast reinforced concrete (RC) roof partially collapsed. The building, constructed in 1950, was in service as a cinema up to 1967 and utilized as a school up to 1985. Finally, it was a hotel up to 2000. In 2004, when the building was not in service and underwent maintenance work, it partially collapsed under the dead load. After the collapse, which involved a large portion of the roof, several beams and two columns, the Court nominated a first Official Technical Consultant in order to investigate on the causes of failure and related …
I DIPINTI MURALI STACCATI: CRITICITÀ E NUOVE PROPOSTE
2015
Characterization of a new natural fiber from Arundo donax L. as potential reinforcement of polymer composites.
2013
Abstract The aim of this paper is to study the possibility of using of Arundo donax L. fibers as reinforcement in polymer composites. The fibers are extracted from the outer part of the stem of the plant, which widely grows in Mediterranean area and is diffused all around the world. To use these lignocellulosic fibers as reinforcement in polymer composites, it is necessary to investigate their microstructure, chemical composition and mechanical properties. Therefore, the morphology of A. donax L. fibers was investigated through electron microscopy, the thermal behavior through thermogravimetric analysis and the real density through a helium pycnometer. The chemical composition of the natura…
Stochastic dynamics of nonlinear systems with a fractional power-law nonlinear term: The fractional calculus approach
2011
Fractional power-law nonlinear drift arises in many applications of engineering interest, as in structures with nonlinear fluid viscous–elastic dampers. The probabilistic characterization of such structures under external Gaussian white noise excitation is still an open problem. This paper addresses the solution of such a nonlinear system providing the equation governing the evolution of the characteristic function, which involves the Riesz fractional operator. An efficient numerical procedure to handle the problem is also proposed.
