In 1992-2012, a considerable amount of soil micro-arthropods has been collected annually as a part of a project of the National Long-Term Ecological Research Network of Latvia at the Mazsalaca Scots Pine forest sites of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve. Until now, the data on oribatid species have not been published. This paper presents a list of oribatid species collected during 21 years of ongoing research in three pine stands of different age. The faunistic records refer to 84 species (including 17 species new to the fauna of Latvia), 1 subspecies, 1 form, 5 morphospecies and 18 unidentified taxa. Extracts prepared from the endosperm of germinating seeds of Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris L., hydrolysed two typical carboxypeptidase substrates, Z-Phe-Ala and Z-Phe-Phe, with pH optima at 4.2 and 5.0. The activities were completely destroyed by diisopropylfluorophosphate. Identical heat inactivation curves and elution patterns in gel chromatography on Sephadex G-200 suggest that the two activities are due to a single enzyme. In resting seeds very low carboxypeptidase activity was present in both the endosperm and the embryo. Aqueous extracts from blackcurrant press cake (BC), Norway spruce bark (NS), Scots pine bark (SP), and sea buckthorn leaves (SB) were obtained using maceration and pressurized hot water and tested for their bioactivities. Maceration provided the extraction of higher dry matter contents, including total phenolics (TPC), anthocyanins, and condensed tannins, which also impacted higher antioxidant activity. NS and SB extracts presented the highest mean values of TPC and antioxidant activity. Individually, NS extract presented high contents of proanthocyanidins, resveratrol, and some phenolic acids. Summary Long-term (1992–2002) effects of climate changes on soil Collembola in Scots pine Pinus sylvestris forests in North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve (northern Latvia) are investigated. The study was carried out in three forest stands of different age, young (30–40 years), middle aged (50–70 years), and old (150–200 years). One hundred soil samples were collected within each sampling site once a year in autumn over a period of 11 years. In total, 66 species of Collembola were found. Abstract Wood charcoal macroremains originating from the archaeological site of Akrotiri, Thera (Greece) have been analyzed. The results obtained suggest the existence of thermophilous vegetation on the island from the Early Cycladic period right up to the catastrophic eruption of the volcano in the Late Cycladic I period. The comparative evaluation of the results gained from this study and the previous ones indicates that during the Early Cycladic period an open Pinus type brutia/halepensis (Cyprus/Aleppo pine) forest prevailed on the island, accompanied by maquis vegetation. Abstract A multivariate chemometric method for monitoring the mass loss of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) by IR spectroscopic determination of chemical changes occurring during the heat treatment (160 - 260 °C, 2 - 8 h) of these wood materials was developed. The method was based on the handling of FTIR data on treated and untreated wood powder samples by the partial least squares (PLS) method. In addition, unknown samples (treated and untreated pine and spruce) were classified into separate groups by the principal component analysis (PCA) method. The chemical changes occurring in the wood samples during heating were also briefly discussed.

Abstract Non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) reserves are crucial for trees to cope with weather extremes, thus to ensure their survival and ecological plasticity. The NSC reserves can depend on social status, suggesting uneven plasticity of trees at the stand level.
